I think runt no. 2 (in an earlier vid, runt 1 was. Thrown over the side) was extremely hungry. It wasn’t able to eat. It couldn’t beat out the others for food. Hence the pecking, hence the removal. Too small, too difficult to feed, too many mouths, what with 3 strong storklets to raise.
that's the 2nd time I've seen a smaller one peck at the others then get thrown off... when he hit his parent's leg that seemed to be the death sentence lol.
I just realized just how creepy it is for a stork to drop off a baby human to it’s family. Storks are not very nice to their hatchlings and their own kind. Their evil!
It's a very good observation. Symbolic of nature is found everywhere in literature, myths and legends. Maybe it refered to the stork dropping it's baby and you get that dropped baby.
Concepts like good and evil do not apply to Animals. Animals resort to infanticide for survival reasons. Most commonly, it is to either because there is not enough food and the Parent/s need emergency food(if the parents die then ALL the Babies die as they cannot hunt or forage) or because too many babies means they need to find more food than they are able and so they have to thin the numbers so the unit can realistically feed. They only have so much time to find food to feed their young each year so they may need to shorten the time they have to spend finding food by removing one or more young. It's a needs of the many over the needs of the few kind of situation. In this video, it appears to be to get rid of a runt that is threatening the rest of the unit with its behavior. In this case, the Mother seems to notice the smaller chick is attacking all of the other chicks relentlessly, and you will notice the Mother only intervenes whenever the smallest Chick begins attacking the others. It was probably getting rid of the small, crazy Chick to protect the rest of the brood from being killed by the crazy small Chick.

The fact that these storks take so long to remove/kill their babies makes me sick. That’s not just doing what is essential, it’s torture. I hate storks now. Vile creatures.
This is how they thin their ranks. The storks, after their chicks mature, take off on a very long migration south. Over 10,000 miles. In order to make the trip the chicks have to fully develop and be full sized. Storks are very large birds as well and can fly very far and fast. The adults know thru eons of doing this that a chick must be large enough in the nest to mature to proper size. If not they got to go. Sometimes they will let a small chick live, but according to stork experts their odds of making it in the wild are very small. Most die because they can't keep up with the others and so on. It's a rough business being a stork. Maybe weeding them out in the nest is a humane way to prevent failure down range.
Strange, I thought this one had made it past the early days and was going to be allowed to live. It was eating a lot of food, which is one way the adult's rate how many will make it (by how much food they have to bring in to feed them). If the runt is eating a lot per its size then it has to go since that alone will hurt the other, larger chicks. For them to make it and thrive they need all the food they can get. Don't be angry or upset with the mother stork, she is ensuring the survival of her strongest chicks. To be fair, I've witnessed humans do the exact same thing in the most extreme circumstances.
No actually. Feel free to judge the failure of evolution here. Nature can make mistakes too. Most avian-type chicks die simply because the “parents” are not suitable or capable of raising their young. Further, is naturally flawed. Knowing that most chicks die of sickness or other factors, it is illogical that the stork would resort to infanticide. And no, most birds do NOT do this. They only remove the dead offspring from the nest, they rarely, actively KILL each other.
@@frontrussian4951 So let me offer a perspective. In Africa, Somalia, I witnessed women abandoning their smallest children because they couldn't keep up - the women were migrating to escape famine and war. The kids, cried until they were too weak. Then they died. In Mozambique, during the civil war, a small girl wandered into our supply camp. She was suffering extreme starvation and dehydration. We never found out if she'd been orphaned or abandoned. Either way, it was too late to save her. The bacteria in her gut had cannibalized her intestines to the point she could not longer process food in any form. We were able to re-hydrate her with a drip, but despite our frantic efforts we could not save her. She died in my arms, but at least she wasn't alone. I could go on. Humans are just animals, and not nice ones. Not at all. I witnessed a man in Malawi behead a bank teller. The reason? His loan request had been denied and the teller (who did not take the decision) was assigned the job of informing him. It took me maybe three seconds to cross the floor, bring him down and disarm him. But it wasn't fast enough. He cut all the way to her spine and she died fast. Americans? Most of them have never seen death - they have no idea how ugly, how brutal, the overwhelming majority of nature can be. But I've seen it.
