Happy Birthday Desmond Dekker - Rebel Clash Celebratory DJ Set

- July 16th marks what would have been Desmond Dekker's 80th Birthday. To celebrate, our friend and DJ, Rebel Clash has put together a special celebratory DJ set featuring Dekker's early works, plus a few tracks from additional artists that featured on the B sides of his early singles.
Put your dancing shoes on and enjoy the next 50 minutes of Desmond's early ska.
This set is the first of many, keep your eyes peeled for more Dekker DJ sets in what would have been his 80th year, courtesy of Trojan Records.

I've been living at a convent in Kingston where I work with sisters who have dementia. I've been playing a lot of Desmond Dekker for them when we do chair exercises. Big UP Desmond Dekker and the AMAZING music Jamrock has brought the world.

I remember very vividly watching the Skatalites play live at The Jazz Cafe in Camden, London about 15 years ago, when about halfway through their set, in walked Desmond Dekker. He walked to the front of the venue, jumped up on stage and proceeded to bang out The Israelites. It was a magical moment.

Respect to the ska legend Desmond Dekker really influenced me as a white working class person to love each other during a really bad period in UK history like the nf I was a anti nazi skinhead loving my ska and reggae which influenced me into being anti racist

Me too - likkle white yout' from Derby, England now living in Newcastle, NSW, Australia.............'cept my love affair with the music began a little earlier - in '64 with Millie Small's "My Boy Lollipop" when I was 7 years old. "Israelites" is still probably the most amazing sound to hear for the very first time.............in early 1969 coming out of my ten-bob-tranny (transistor radio!!!! for the youngsters reading this) it sounded like it came from another planet. Happy 80th Birthday and RIP, the KING OF SKA..........you are still with us through your amazing musical legacy. RIP Millie Small, too...............you were responsible for the song that initiated my love of this crazy, beautiful music that is still my fave music genre. I've never looked back.

Shout out to the great Desmond, his music has soul, one of my all time favourite singer and person. Can honestly say that his music got me through toughest times in my life and for that ill be forever grateful to him. May he rest in peace but as long as we blast his hits he will never be forgotten.

This is phenomenal, I remember as a child I first heard "The Israelites" and fell in love with the beat and the song and all of it. I can't remember exactly what year it was but I was less than 10 but more than 4.... I've been a listener of Reggae for years purely because it sounds so damn good! Thanks for this, I greatly appreciate it.
