Bani you are fantastic , The dance clips gives the song more affective . Hope to know the lyrics In English at least to understand what you are singing . By the way I’m from California and dance teacher also danced a lot the Georgian or Circassian dances . Your songs and dances talk to my ❤️.
I love kavkaz dance (dances from the Caucasus mountains). Always wondered about the battle origin of these dances. The movements certainly look martial and the dances sometimes include swords, shields and bows. They seem almost like the Kavkaz eqvivalent of Capoeira (Brazilian half-dance/half-martial art).
They are more often than not evocative of war and warriorhood. Many dance moves are based off of fencing techniques, and khridoli (ancient georgian martial art that kind of resembles modern krav maga), and chidaoba (Georgian wrestling similar to greco roman wrestling). I can’t speak to wider Caucasian dances, they seem to be less proliferate and less documented and less varied than the Georgian dances (no way of telling which came first, but the evidence that we do have points at Georgia. But, it could have easily come from the northern Caucasians, no way to tell, the north caucasus does not have an old tradition of record keeping and cultural maintenance, it makes tracing their largely tribal and more primitive history difficult, but interesting.) but in the Georgian ones usually the way it goes is men swarm the stage in orderly fashion, as an army would get into formation on the field, then they display their cohesion by doing complex synchronised manoeuvres, after that the best of them come out in front one by one or in twos or threes and perform the most difficult moves, sort of like sending your best warrior ahead of the army to do some posturing, after that the best ones fight with swords and shields and daggers often with sparks flying do display real force behind the blows, after that the women usually arrive and the fighting stops and the men give up the stage to the women and stand patiently by, then they all do some ballroom (or rather medieval hall) dancing together, then the best of the men and women do some dancing while everyone stands by, then the women leave and the men continue the fighting and warring. So basically the dance tells of the constant reality of ancient and pre modern Georgia, fighting, fucking then fighting again. Georgia is located in the worst region for peace, surrounded by empires (Rome, Persia, Caliphate, Russia that kind of thing) and slaver economies that subsist off of raiding and catching slaves (the north Caucasus), in a lush, fertile valley surrounded to the north by harsh, cold steppes, to the south by arid shrubland and sweltering deserts, so basically everyone is always trying to conquer or enslave Georgians, and the mountains that enclose Georgia have provided material defence for Georgian culture for 6000 years, but to be honest its more like they've prolonged the suffering, because there has hardly ever been 20 years without a defensive war. Thats what the dances are supposed to be about essentially. They're a very old sort of propaganda device, a way for the Georgians to romanticise their suffering, nobility, bravery blahblahblah. They convey their point quite convincingly, but its best to just enjoy the artifice and take the art with a pinch of salt. Georgians are like Italians in that they are not more emotional than anyone else, but they sure love the drama and the hand gestures and the machismo and the wine and the tomato sauce.
@@TerraThink Im a classical historian by education, and I have family in Georgia, so I've made a point to get into arguments with them. You learn a lot from arguments. Georgians paint everything with one massive rosy brush, their treasured identity lives in their extensive and variegated fables. They seem to have retained a lot of antiquated Mediterranean ethos and traditions that most cultures have abandoned. For instance, their young people still regularly prefer feasting rather than going to bars, by feasting I mean getting around a wastefully full table of home cooked food and drinking way too much wine while competitively toasting, singing and reciting poetry (im not joking, this is a very common, sometimes weekly affair for many), their young clamour for positions in their folkloric musical and dancing ensembles, their dedication to christianity (radiantly coloured by their ancient pagan foundational customs) borders on medieval, a lot of their literature curriculum hasn't been updated since 1350, their hospitality in that they believe a guest to be sent by god (they are mistaken in that this, the divinity or divine ordinance of guests, is not at all theirs but an archaic and defunct Mediterranean and even north European ethos that is dying in Georgia too with the advent of Airbnb and hotels) can be ruinous on households. I wish I could speak to you about other nations of the Caucasus, but im ignorant of them, the only tbing I know is that they are nothing like Georgia and that they are more difficult to learn about for the lack of documentation (save for Armenia, which has a very rich and old tradition of historiography and cultural cultuvation, but I never really got around to learning about them, all I know is that they are even less like Georgians, excepting a shared religion, than the other peoples of the Caucasus). This perhaps makes the North Caucasus more interesting, like the highlands of Scotland: hills, mountains, clans, raiding culture, struggle against empires, unfettered savagery, overwhelming spirit of individualism, mystical obscurity and all.
