Dan & Qiang, finally made the move to Thailand. Have been in Rawai/Phuket since October. Just moved into a brand new one bedroom apartment with a/c in Rawai as their first tenant, for 15,000 baht/month, everything included except wifi, which is approximately 650 baht/month. I am renting a motorbike and today obtained a Thai license for both auto and motorbike in Phang Nga Province. Happy and safe travels ✌️
I loved my 6 years in Bangkok. What really helped was renting a condo that was centrally located and had a really nice pool. During the hot season I would spend afternoons by the pool. It was a short walk from a BTS station. 25,000 baht/mo Things to do - currently the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra is playing free concerts in Lumphini Park. In the fall international dance companies come to town. Throughout the year there are festivals in the city parks. Bangkok is a spectacular food destination. You can easily splurge at world class restaurants at fully western prices. The same with some of the HiSo bars.
Welcome back to Bangkok....I have been living here for almost 2 years....I walk about 10 Kilometers per day and use Grab a few times per week and use the MRT and BTS almost daily.
@watchlifewithcharles906 I retired to Jomtien in November 2023 and am enjoying the heck out of it. Congrats on the 10 kilometers/day. Eventually, I will tackle the adventure of exploring Bangkok , I already have an area, soi18, that I'm considering staying near because of its proximity to theMRT and BTS and popular mall. As a long-term resident, how are you handling the air quality in Bangkok?
Retirement visa correction - Expats from the US, UK, and Australia cannot use the 65,000/mo method at first. It's a complicated but they have to start with the 800,000k deposit for the first year. Expats from other countries can get an income affidavit from their embassy and use the monthly method right away
It is a huge help if you have a friend there with paid off house. I had a friend there and one in 2019 in the philippines. Neither one of them had rent because the houses were paid off already. So in 2019 in the Philippines and 2022 in Thailand all I did was help pay for groceries and gas money.
Hello Dan. Great video!! This was one of the better and more realistic expense breakdowns I've seen. I'm going to be moving to Pattaya this time next year. Will DEFINITELY check out some of the suggested additional content. Thanks for posting. Oh.....one question.....with the water bottle and filter, does this mean you can drink water right from the tap?
You interviewed an American expat in Da Nang, Vietnam a month ago who said that Da Nang was a better retirement town than any places in Thailand. Even though you did this video about Bangkok as a retirement place, you still chose Da Nang your retirement location. And I can see that. Da Nang's a pretty relaxing beach town.
Dan nailed it. I lived in Bangkok for 2 years, this can definitely be done if you drink out another like some people I know ad a 1000 us. Eat where thae Thai people eat. Always ask if taxi has meter. Some do but don't use. Best to take scooter taxi. Shopper and lazada, order online. Woman all over. Stay away from nana St. Sex bars, you will be ripped off. The Thai people are great, friendly, smile and always willing to help.
Another great video, Dan! Wondering, when using AIS(?) for the internet (hotspot) and phone, does that mean you change sim cards every time you go to a new city .. in Thailand, Vietnam or wherever? And does that mean you do not have a regular phone number and it always changes? If so, how do family and closer friends keep in contact with you? .. especially if they need to get ahold of you quickly? And thanks for mentioning the retirement visas for Thailand. Could you also mention in some future video the requirements to realistically retire in Vietnam and the Philippines? Say, for someone with 250k in savings?Thailand retirement seems straight-forward .. Vietnam (I saw in another video) the rules always seem to be changing .. and the Philippines seem to be easy with the 36 month visa re-sets. Ok, thanks!

I'm not sure why there's talk of moving to Thailand with the new tax after 180 days? Their tax rate is 35% for foreigners. Once they get hit with taxes for everything pensions etc the mood will be different unless they change the law. As the law stands 35% after 180 days as of January 1st 2024. Hope they change that !
The tax rate depends on your income. It is progressive. It is not fixed at 35%. Plus, there are some exceptions and loop holes. Talk to a licensed Thai accountant. :-)
It might be difficult to track ATM withdrawals. My understanding is foreign money is taxed by what is brought/transferred into the country. Not on a foreigner savings/income kept in their home country.
Have you been or are you planning to visit China? I couldn't find any of your videos on the subject, but I'd love to learn more about visiting there, what costs to expect and the tourist visa process. I'm also very interested in Okinawa and other parts of Japan, but they might not be what most people would consider a retire cheap destination. You and Qiang always provide an interesting perspective.
No. I love slow traveling the world. So Earth is my permanent home so far. Eventually I may get a base and live there 6 months of the year and travel the other 6 months or so, while I am able. :-)

@@JeffMathias A lot of places in the US don't have Austrailia's weather. For instance, it's -10C outside right now. It's called a real winter, not what passes for winter down under.
I live in Alaska. Dryer is a must here.
I’m currently in Đà Nẵng and it’s definitely improved substantially since my last time here in 2005. It’s cheap but not dirt cheap so would like your overall thoughts with regards to how much you spent in Đà Nẵng vs Bangkok
Both the Bangkok report and the Nha Trang Report give line items for our estimates and for other more spendy expats. They are both at the first link in the comments below their respective videos.
Are there one month only rentals that I can find online aside from looking at AirBNB? Or is that my best bet for finding a good place and a good price?
@jnsa9454, Here is how we find cheap apartments all over the world now. Watch the video and read the text to get all of our tips:

You need to do your research. 35% only applies to income over 5m baht per year or about $140k/year. Stop spreading misinformation.
That is good to know.
@@Wizerudwhat about retired people??
Have you been or are you planning to visit China? I couldn't find any of your videos on the subject, but I'd love to learn more about visiting there, what costs to expect and the tourist visa process. I'm also very interested in Okinawa and other parts of Japan, but they might not be what most people would consider a retire cheap destination. You and Qiang always provide an interesting perspective.
I have been to China before starting this channel. Maybe after I finish visiting the more obvious retire cheap countries. :-)
During all Your decade plus years of travel experience. Have You found a permanent Home Base You call Home?
No. I love slow traveling the world. So Earth is my permanent home so far. Eventually I may get a base and live there 6 months of the year and travel the other 6 months or so, while I am able. :-)
@@VagabondAwake ❤️
It’s important you make that clear
What?
You’ve got to be sober and aware of you circumstances while using motorbike taxis. You have to be able to lean hold on. If you’re heavy you need to be able to control your weight . You can fall off the bike
True.
Americans retiring abroad: because life's too short to spend all your golden years stuck in traffic.😅
It is possible but not enjoyable.
I live in America on about 1600 a month and traveled to Philippines as well as Thailand on about that much pay and saving. I work summers out in the west at national parks in Wyoming and Montana as well
have you tried ? lol
@@marcinasia1731Yes!
It would be a lonely miserable existence .Dan bases his cost on 2 staring.
Iyt is not one size fits all. Just like in your home country. Costs vary per person.
@@marcinasia1731 I made 31,000 this year the most I've ever made 34,000 in any given year and usually made like 25k a year in America. A lot of it has to do with not buying things you don't need not having an excessive bills and I personally live with a roommate that owns his own place and I only pay $200 a month all bills sleeping on the couch in living room. Actually to save money to go to the Philippines in Thailand I live two separate times in storage buildings on purpose. Not indoor not air conditioned no heat no insulation. I did have a light bulb which I ran an extension to and had a microwave in a bed and a heated blanket just saying and a dresser. I purposely did that while working and save money up to go overseas
Just to remind you, you have an Asian woman there. It’s not that easy for a single pensioner coming there. You would have no intent of doing that on your own. Tell these people so they don’t go and try and meet an undesirable. MAKE THAT CLEAR. They wouldn’t have benefit of an on hand translator, a friend and advisor
She is not Thai. She is Malaysian. She doesn't speak Thai.
Can one get a 6 month visa?
Possibly for a student visa, such as to study Thai or Kick boxing.
No way 35,000 Baht (970 USD) was bare min 20 years ago.
Hey @Nemothewonderfish, thanks for the great question. Here is my report on the 4 kinds of people that retire internationally and the estimated levels of cash each type needs. These expenses in this report are for a stationary life here I explain the other three types in this report and their estimated cash needs.

Your about as popular as Mark Thornton
I don't know him. :-) I must not be famous. lol.
Thanks for the video, mate, very good information. $970 is not enough to retire you good in Thailand depending on your life style. You need at least $3K to be living there for good PLUS another savings.
I spend nowhere near 3K a month in Bangkok. Are you out in the bars every night?
@@robertw8666exactly
@apoloestrada2908, There is no set cost of living for everyone. The fact that one person can live on a certain amount does not mean that another person can live on that amount. The only way to know what your expenses would be is to go there and pick where you are going to live, eat, drink, and entertain yourself and add it all up. You must do an exploratory visit with your feet on the ground before you will know your cost of living. Thanks for watching and commenting on the video. Dan
9:49 Rubbish, stop spreading misinformatiin..i live in Thailand, married ,pay off new car and pay the wife 8000 bht pm for food,etc..US 1500pm is plenty..too many like to brag how much money they have..nauseating!
@@robertw8666 Nope, my plan is twice a week without buying LD if I ever move, I was in Thailand last year for 2 months and surveyed it, all the prices, does not matter what it is, are doubled up and way too expensive due to the fact that it's been westernized. So, I decided to keep on working.
A single person would struggle to live on $1000 pm in Bangkok…,
And you know it!
Living costs in Thailand range over a very large spectrum. There is no set rules. I assume you know that the average local live on less than you are proposing?
Lost me at ladyboy cabaret, otherwise thanks!
For that cheap 1br apartment, it must be a long-ish walk to the train or subway (two different systems, BTW).
Riding a motorcycle taxi is risky but it is the fastest way to zip through Bangkok traffic. Riding one yourself is another animal, though.
Don't be eating that coconut ice cream in front of me girl! You either Dan. It makes me fat just watching you guys eat it! Nah. Enjoy!

Hi, Vagabond Awake - Dan & Qiang..., "It is sometimes best, not to say anything." * However..., your prices are too high for Bangkok, Thailand. The farther that you go North from Bangkok..., the towns and cities cost much less ( Lower-Cost-of-Living-Expenses ), than Bangkok. * Way less in ( cost-of-living ) expenses, as you move North... * Still...,, respectfully..., your Bangkok, Thailand prices are too high, especially for one person... * Excellent video and very informative, and "Thank you" for sharing the video...
