Love it Ryth.! Ginger Baker IS a percussionist pianist and classical composer. He is doing exactly what a percussion chart would demand. Try to play "Sunshine.." any other way, you can not. In my young introductory years, I realized that as a piano IS a percussion instrument , Drumming was a distinctive series of complimentary notes supporting the melody. Believe or not Keith Moon played under this dogma. You get as many silences on a Moon song as you do fills. Of course Ringo follows the same school , so does John Densmore (doors) . Dennis Wilson (Beach Boys) although in no way a great drummer , also just played the absolute minimum to lay down a groove . These are Percussionists the elite of drummers.
It's not weird at all, I think it's weird that there are people whose memories aren't jogged by a song. The songs of the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s are soundscapes that trigger emotions and memories in me.
One of the best drum covers I've seen. Almost spot-on throughout the piece, and easy to follow what you're doing. THANK YOU! Now I can learn this song and get my band to play it.
It's crazy how simplistic Baker really is, yet how powerful of a groove and message he sends with it. These are basic rudiments just doing what they do best. The challenge of percussion or drumming is knowing WHERE to put the beat, not how many you're going to put down. Baker clearly represents that in this song, he doesn't take anything away from the song and he doesn't flood it with volume. Dynamic.
This song holds a lot of memories for me, Disreali Gears was one of my favorite albums, and the beat in this song made me a big time fan of Ginger Baker. You nailed another cover. Good work!
Ditto on your cover! I've been using it for the last 7 years. (I have to revisit occasionally.) Baker has been my favorite drummer since, Fresh Cream was released and I was a mere 15 years old. I was denied the privilege of taking lessons in 4th grade after building a drum pad in shop class, but at age 56 my daughters, (probably after hearing my sad story), bought me a snare drum and two lessons for Fathers Day. I'd been going to drum circles and such for a while before hand and that may have prompted the gift. I took lessons for two years and I'm now in two bands. I'm going to be 72 in September and I don't plan on stopping until this rickety body forces me to! Thanks again!
Brother you never cease to amaze me. I love watching you play the drums. Awesome song and awesome job. You've been playing for around 47 years and I started at age 59. So by the time I'm 106 years old I should be as good as you are....haha....Keep on Drumming my friend
I will never come close to this quality, but you sure helped me understand the drumming style of this song that I have no choice but to play soon. Thanks for showing us.
Before i was not much of a fan of people playing drums, but since i saw you on yt and watched lots of your videos and how you performed, i became one! ;D
Great timing the flams are good, the double bass is a must. I needed an adjust and some fine tuning ! Thx it’s nice to see young musicians playing our ol school legendary music! Keep up the good work!
Yes man you played it absolutely perfect just as it's written . Awesome job man I can't stress how much I appreciate drummers who play songs as thier written that's why alot of drummers watch drum videos to see how it looks because some can play by ear alone while others need to see the notes
Rob oshea Thank you for viewing my cover and for explaining why at times I receive comments that are critical of my interpretation. Covers aren't always instructional but can be interpretations especially if a drumless song track is used.
Sal nailed it, again. Many thins thanks for helping out with this one, Sal. This man is the drummer for drummers to listen to. And if you do listen you will have the confidence that you are playing the song correctly. Thanks again, my friend! Keep your videos coming---I keep getting better and better.
Man you rock! I've been taking lessons sparingly (economy and all) but I have this classic on my iPod and have had the the hardest time trying to "listen" and just make out the pattern...it is a very unique rhythm (Ginger was so ecclectic in his applications of ethic drumming into the world of rock...genious!). I'm going to keep watching your stick and foot techniques until one day I hope to be as good as you...thank you for sharing and inspiring us neophyte drummers! John
Than k you so much for going thru the effort to do this. I'm a guitarist setting up EZdrummer to record the song myself. And watching you will make the drums BE real. Which this group deserves this and more.
syn707 No I don't know. Besides how would they extract just the drums? However, plenty of people have paid for my drum tracks as I'm in the business of selling my performances both for covers and original music many of which are on my channel.
It sounds like you nailed it pretty good. It's great people like you showing the world the "genius" of a certain musician. Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, Carl Palmer, and John Bonham played big parts in their bands' "signature sound." When you have a 3 piece power band the percussionist plays a huge role in their overall sound. I never saw Cream, but, I did see LZ (twice) , The Who (three times), and ELP ( three times).
Very good, I'm glad to know my videos serve other drummers to learn the drumming. Keep drumming and good hear from Mexico. Greetings from up the road in northern California.
Hey Sal, Great job! This was one of those takes that really expanded my drumming back in the day. I remember every break. Sure I couldn't play it as beautifully as you did. Blessings friend!
I've always felt that the unique drum part to this song is just as fundamental as the signature guitar riff. When Clapton plays it in his solo bands, the drummers usually just play a straight ahead beat, which is much less interesting. The song is so much more entrancing and psychedelic with the original drum style,
Merci beaucoup!! Thanks for viewing the video and commenting and by doing so you've introduced yourself and channel and I subscribed. Good luck on your drumming channel.
thanks sal you're one of my drum hero's, I have tried to play this song since I started playing drums.I never came across as good a cover as yours so I kinda improvised to my abilities and I've found that works for me and has helped me enjoy my drumming and not get bogged down trying to learn stuff note for note. But it's always nice and very helpful to see them played note for note and you're stuff is the best, hope you liked my video response. I know I missed the intro :)
Just take your time and take it section by section, you’ll be surprised what the body assimilates and how the next day you’ll play better what you were trying to learn the day before. This is one of those covers because it’s a classic song regarding the drumming that I wanted to play it as exactly as Ginger played it so it took me some time to learn it. Thanks for watching the video and keep drumming!
Wow!!! I love this! When I was a kid my Dad would yell at me when I'd listen to this album because I would be drumming along on the coffee table or my school books..LOL You rocked this one Sal!!
Awesome drum cover. Can finally see how it's done. I have always found it feels strange putting the backbeat on the 1 and 3 instead of 2 and 4. Unusual but delightful!
First....I'm half way getting this into EZDrummer....so now I've watched you quite a few times playing up to the solo. You do such a fine job of this...also, I love your ElecDrum setup...what a great sound. I don't know why, but you remind me of a Vietnam buddy who played drums. He couldn't have a set there but, and you'll love this, he made a whole kit, practice pad setup. He took 2x4's, and created pads covered with innertube rubber for each cymbal and drum head. He'd put on headphones and play along with the records we had...I had an acoustic guitar and we would jam our butts off. I wonder if he ever kept up with it...he was quite good, even though it was just the pads...but you could tell..
Yes, that's a good way to approach these covers, you do what you can to pay tribute to the drumming but also express yourself as well and not get bogged down with trying to copy it note for note. The original drummer wouldn't or couldn't even do that if they covered the song today. Yes, I like your cover and approved the video so it should show up along with this video. Keep drumming! and thanks for checking out my covers.
Yes, I heard about the Motown video too, will have to check those out. I also want to see The Wrecking Crew movie too, but it shows in select theaters.
I honestly don't understand why people don't drum like this more. Such a nice, smooth, syncopated reliance on the toms that you don't hear enough of
Thanks for checking out the cover. Yes, this is one-of-a-kind groove and song.
Love it Ryth.!
Ginger Baker IS a percussionist pianist and classical composer. He is doing exactly what a percussion chart would demand. Try to play "Sunshine.." any other way, you can not. People do not play it because it is a tough one where the drums are upbeat while the song is downbeat.
Not only is the drumming impeccable, but the tuning of the drums is spot on. So very impressive!
This guy is the only one that did it right
Thank you and for checking out the cover.
..yup, I gotta play bass and sing this thing! This dude is spot on..
Wow!! absolutely amazing, he makes it look so easy.
Groovy man, thanks for viewing my cover.
Like the beatles hat

Man,I am empressed!!! I'm an old drummer from the 60's, and ginger is where I learned most of my skills.
Thanks for checking out the cover.
Man you must have a lot of knowledge for spelling impressed wrong, your a kid.
This is the best drum cover I ever seen in RUclips. This is relly a great performance.
+ishiyama333 Gee, thanks, I'm much appreciative.
Thanks! It's helping me a lot, I'm a 25 year old playing with 2 upper 40 year old's. This way I can keep up with the style.
This song holds a lot of memories for me, Disreali Gears was one of my favorite albums, and the beat in this song made me a big time fan of Ginger Baker. You nailed another cover. Good work!
Another great demonstration of drumming. Thank you.
And again, you are an expert in finding the best trigger sounds to go with the song!
Finally something, that really shows you how it's done...
For some reason, this was so relaxing for me lol thanks!
Good one Sal. Nice job! Reminds me of hanging out at the swimming pool back in the day. Sounds great!
Ditto on your cover! I've been using it for the last 7 years. (I have to revisit occasionally.) Baker has been my favorite drummer since, Fresh Cream was released and I was a mere 15 years old. Great to see how the drumming is done on one of my favorite rock songs! For us who were too young to see these great bands!
Now that's a wonderful compliment. Thanks so much for sharing.
Wow does this song bring back memories ! Excellent !

Sure Steve, thanks for checking out the cover and I hope it helps your drumming the tune.
I have alot of fave rock n roll songs,Sunshine of your love is one of them.Ive loved the drums to the song and your awesome at it.
Thank you.

This is amazing , spot on just like Mr Baker played it
Thanks. Yea, close enough. And I'm sure, Mr. Baker would be grumpy about my cover of his drumming.
This is music back when it meant something. Good drumming my friend. Great sound.
Thanks for checking it out.
Unreal!!! 😍😍😍
Thanks. Good to hear from the UK. Keep rockin' and drummin'!
Another awesome cover Sal, great song to cover and and a great cover to the song. well done my friend. btw love the drum sounds and the mix spot on.
Fantastic cover. This song is on my list of songs to learn on drums. You really got Ginger's drumming down.
Yes man you played it absolutely perfect just as it's written . Awesome job man I can't stress how much I appreciate drummers who play songs as thier written that's why alot of drummers watch drum videos to see how it looks because some can play by ear alone while others need to see the notes

Absolutely marvelous! We're just going to have to pick this number up for the band. Nice work. Thanks!
Really great drumming.

Well thank you Jay for viewing and for sharing that my cover videos serve other drummers like you. Keep drumming!
Mountain - Don't Look Around would be a riot to listen to.
Wow u captured that perfectly...first time I heard it performed on electric drums...great job
Thank Greg. Just know this: what is seen is an ekit, but what is heard is an acoustic kit that I triggered using Superior Drummer.
I love it!
Fantastic cover, spot on
+Oliver Parkinson Thank you

syn707 Right on, glad the cover helps. Rock on!!!
I wonder if you know of anyone that has downloaded and used your track to record the song...
syn707 No I don't know. Besides how would they extract just the drums? However, plenty of people have paid for my drum tracks as I'm in the business of selling my performances both for covers and original music many of which are on my channel.
Interesting....nice gig! And you're right, trying to remove the music would only mangle the drums as well
Absolutely fab! Thanks.
Very awesome drumming.
Another cover to add to my favorites list.
Jack Bruce (bassist of Cream) was passed away last night at 71
R.I.P
Ok no one likes him

Hey Sal, Great job! This was one of those takes that really expanded my drumming back in the day. I remember every break. Sure I couldn't play it as beautifully as you did. Blessings friend!

I always wanted you to do this song. Another amazing cover. :)
Yes, I recall hearing that back in the 80s.
