  • Review of one of my favourite film cameras, the Nikon F90X with the 50mm f/1.4D lens. I shot a roll of expired Kodak Max 400 35mm film for this review. Since I have shot with this camera a lot and I already know what kind of pictures I can get out of the camera I was not worried about the expired film having any impact on my judgement of the camera itself.
    In this video I also explain how to use your Nikon G lenses with the Nikon F90X / F90S. Great camera for film photography.
    I shot this video in an alley in the city of Kelowna, BC Canada using my iPhone 12 Pro Max. I shot some photos of an abandoned car, some garbage bins and some beautiful street art murals. I tried to show what kind of bokeh you could get with the lens by taking some pictures of some plant leaves.

    This current RUclips fashion that says plastic isn't good quality is ridiculous. I am an old guy. Brownies were always plastic and cheap, but were also amazingly durable, but pro gear was always metal in the 1960's and 70's. When plastic started getting used in pro grear, especially in medium format, we loved it. Cameras were a lot lighter for the same kind of gear. It was wonderful.
    Plastics in camera and lenses was seen as advantageous with only a few exceptions. For example, Nikon started putting plastic focus and aperture rings on lenses. No one had a problem with the aperture rings, but people preferred rubberized focus ring grips, and so most AF and AF-D lenses received mid-model upgrades to the focus ring grip, while some AF lenses got it when they upgraded to AF-D versions.
    The clever thing Canon did, was to develop plastics that felt like metal, and many manufacturers learned how to put a metal casing and camera mount onto lenses with plastic internals, or got clever with super-lightweight metals. As a result there are lenses out there that people assume are metal, but are not, and they never question why the lens is relatively light, and some things people think must be plastic due to weight are not plastic.
    In the case of the F90x series, there is a lot of use of a plastic shell over metal internals. It is tough as all heck, and can withstand drops and knocks that break or dent many other cameras, and part of that resilience comes from the toughness of the plastics used.
    Its biggest flaw when it comes to plastics are the plastic coatings over metal parts like the back door. This was the early days of experimenting with plastics that could be applied to metal surfaces as a durable coating, but gave a rubberized easy-to-grip feel. These coatings improved in subsequent decades, but in the 90's they were prone to long term migration of the plasticizer to the surface, resulting in stickiness after 20+ years. The only solution to that is removal of the layer using alcohol solvents. A second flaw is that cameras left in the sun too much can develop brittleness in the prism hump. I have not seen it myself, but I have heard it can happen.
    Overall, however, I would regard the use of plastics as a feature, not a bug. An all-metal F90x would have weighed a lot more than it does.

    I really love the look of the expired film. It’s like an unpredictable nostalgia filter. I’ve rarely used film but I was using up expired film several years back.
    The camera looks cool too with the 90s vibes!

    Bought in the 90s my first Nikon F90X in Dortmund/Germany with the 35-70mm f:2,8; and the second one last year in Baden-Baden with the the fabulous 80-200 mm f:2,8! With the first F90x I shoot in colour and with the second in B&W! With the first one in more than 30 year never, never a problem. This machine was always by my side. It is my best friend. "He" never deceived me! And the second one will do the same, I already know it ! Love from Alsace ...

    Back in the day I wanted an f4 price wise forget it I looked at the F90 too but waited for the Minolta 9 as I had a Minolta 300 2.8 so it made sense the 300 is long gone but the 9 is still going strong I’ve never once regretted that camera. Fast forward to last month just got me an F4 for 300 nzd cheap as chips but does it work no idea I’m awaiting a delivery of film. Top vid mate loved it cheers

      Hey man, so sorry for the slow reply! I missed your comment some how. Anyhow, ya the Minolta a9 is such an amazing camera. I have one too and I really love it. I should use it more often. But ya both the F90 and F4 are really great. I always loved my F90x, but since getting an F4 I realize what all the hype was about, it's a really fun camera to use!

    I remember lusting after this at its launch, £1000 plus put me off, since then I have picked up a couple and use them regularly, back in the 1970s owning a camera with these features was a thing of dreams, back then it was all manual, mind you I wish I could go back and stock up on film! if only we knew back then.

    Great review of a top camera. I packed all my stuff in boxes when I moved a few years ago, and I couldn't find my beloved F100, so I went for the F90X, which I got for under 30 USD. Of course, a week later I found my F100, LOL. Still use both of them, but I have too many Nikon film SLRs.

    Actually, G lens, pressing the Ps (variable program) in any mode overrides S & P or you can select program scene modes. I like Po (portrait) or I’m always f2.8. But variable program means you can rotate the command dial to shift it. Other P modes can fix variable aperture, depending on your scene. Even in TTL flash, r-E (portrait with redeye reduction)

    Thank you for the video! Wanted your opinion on this: recently got a nikon n90s, and also own a d3400. Thinking of getting a 50mm 1.8 lens, but not sure if I shld get a D or G version. G would fit my 3400 perfectly, but would only be half compatible with n90s. Vice versa for D version. What do you think? Will G or D make more sense, or is there any other lens I should consider?

    • @RobMoses
      @RobMoses  3 года назад

      I would get the G version, I have both and the G is definitely better (it's a little big, but it's better). The G will work with your N90S. Watch the video again from 3:11 and I explain how to use your G lens with the camera. If you have any more questions let me know.

    Talk to me man. What’s the pick between the F90x or the Minolta 800si ? Or would another camera mid range 90s camera take its place?

    • @RobMoses
      @RobMoses  3 года назад

      As much as I love the 800si I gotta say the F90X. Even just for the styling alone. For some reasons I just love the look and feel of that camera. it's unique and I like that. Of course it is a very capable machine also and there isn't much it cant do. With that said, if you can get to gather a little extra cash I'd say the ultimate 90's photo machine is the Minolta a9! I got one and I love it! I'm going to make a video about it in the spring.
