Hey, thanks for the review. I don’t have the bottle and never will but I just opened up my Highland Park single cast series wild Rose 12 year old exclusively for Alberta 288 bottles at 65.8% which was bottled in 2019 paid just over 200. It is absolutely amazingand I know there’s still at least five on the shelf here in Calgary

I’ve had the 13yr Kirkwall from Total Wine in the states. First fill Sherry but at 64% the alcohol burn is way too much. Plus it has a distinctive coal note that I can’t get over. Bring it down with some water and ignore the coal and it’s a decent whisky.

Glad you were able to enjoy one of these. Last couple of years these distillery single casks have been all over. Think I saw a interview with the master distiller saying he really wanted to have a single cask program. 2 years ago got one of these. It was a 12yr 1st fill European oak sherry hogshead 60.1%. Super Dark Sherry Bomb. I got the same thing with just every once in a while through the whole bottle getting that heather peat. The cask types are all over the place with 2nd fill sherry butt ect... Cheers Jeremy

California has 3 different single casks for California and K&L had 2 different ones. I got got a Cali edition 13 year for $167 and I got both K&L editions that were a 10 year $140 and a 12 year for $160 and the 10 year is the best of them all and more peaty than all the others and Martin Markvarden said it was his favorite of all the single casks that they put out last year and they put out a few dozen globally. Picking up my Mortlach CS 12 single cask sherry butt pick indy bottling today from K&L for $59.99. I bought a few at that price.

Hey Koh En - I had already picked up 1 of those Sovereign Mortlachs, but reading your note here inspired me to get a second just now since more showed up!

Yah, I bought a bunch of these special single casks and overall they were good, but not mind blowing. I would say say my favorite was the RipTide release, which I think was only available on the East Coast- that was a 12yr bottled in 2018 1st fill European oak sherry puncheon @65.5%. I found it on sale for $125usd, so a good price to buy multiples. Great review….save me some…lol

$125usd is a very fair price for 12yr cask strength. I ended up finished off this bottle lol, but I do have another :)

I've only had a couple pours of one of these Highland Park Single Cask Series, it was the 'Heart of it All' bottling.
It was a Refill Sherry Butt, 13 Years Old, 63.2% ABV, and it was kind of disappointing. I was glad to have gotten a chance to try it though. I do like a good Highland Park.
    Cheers 🥃

I have a 12 yr old cask strength from HP. It was $200 (plus tax ofcourse). Have just had the neck pour ... and found to be hot and agressive. Letting it air out to settle down before I dip my nose in it again

I did like the sample I had but balked buying one due to the price. Sierra Springs has a private cask Arran 14 year Pinot Noir cask strength for $130 Cad. Not sure if is good as the HP but that price difference is hard to ignore.

    • @robinsharkey6658
      @robinsharkey6658 3 года назад

I'd buy that ARRAN just out of principle. They've been doing damn good work for years now. I purchased the last LCBO exclusive HP for the exorbitant price of 275$ and will not be going down that road again!!

I as well got the K&L 12 yo CS store pick along with the 10 yo - both are really good IMHO - and i agree with Ko En that perhaps the 10 is a bit better - more of that heather peat less obscured by the intense sherry of the 12 yo. All the best

European Oak first fill was also the Binny's HP release last year but for $200. And its supposed to be spectacular. I picked one up based on reviews by a few friends but haven't cracked it yet. IF you are looking for that spice note from the European Oak, sadly things will only get more expensive going forward. I've had a bunch of these, most of them American Oak. The Heathrow airport AO 13 yr was particularly good and good value at 104GBP

Yeah, I dont like having to get used to american oak seasoned sherry. Dont think ive tried a cask that was exceptionally great.

Glad you were able to find a decent HP, despite the price (which is absolutely insane). Personally, I find most of their releases over the last couple of years have been hit or miss for me, which is unfortunate being a HP fan. I felt they had a good thing going with annual age statement stuff like the Full Volume and Twisted Tattoo, but I haven't heard of anything else yet.

HP have released a lot of single casks the last couple of years. Most of the ones I have tasted have been good to great. I think we have had 5 releases in Norway so far, with the one named "vintersolsnu" being a true first fill gem at 16yo :)

New Hampshire got a single cask similar to this and they're still charging ~$200USD. It's been sitting on shelves collecting dust for close to two years now.

I was so excited when I saw this pop up, but at that ridiculous price it was an easy pass...
The Trillium release (also overpriced) was around for a long time, but this one had the magic words on the label: 'first fill sherry' so it sold out pretty quickly.
I guess my odds of getting it on clearance are slim....😆
Nice review, I'm glad it was a tasty bottle for you!

It seems natural colour of whisky is a main selling point these days. Look at that Springbank 10 Local Barley.. crazy

Why doesn’t any of the reviewers ever mention other Scotches they like better or worse. So I really enjoy your reviews and scoring, but I would like you to tell me what other Scotches you like better for the money. Dalmore King Alexander? GlenDronach 21? 18?, Bunnahabhain 18? Etc... you get my point. Where would you spend your money more smartly. We value your opinion but no one ever reviews and scores one expression and then provides other expressions they find better or worse. Instead of scoring, try ranking the bottle against 3 better options and 3 worse options. Just a suggestion.

There are tons of which Scotch is better videos, either by age or by distillery. Here is an 18 year rundown link to a video from Jeremy.

@@peterwhite507 got it, saw the video and it’s great. But I don’t want to go back to past videos to find comparisons to Scotch’s your currently reviewing, which doesn’t include your review of new HP 18 yo. if you could pick one or two you like better or worse it would give me some perspective on wether I want to buy it. Just saying, your reviews are great.

    • @SippersSocialClub

If you go by my scores you can get an idea. Unless there's a direct comparison its hard to do that for every bottle. I did mention this profile is similar to Balvenie 15 Sherry Single Barrel, I think that's a better buy.

These things are very high proof and tasty, but price point is absurd. sampled a 12 yo FF sherry and it was certainly packed with flavor on the front, but the nose was a touch mediocre and it really showed youth on the finish. For $200 USD there are better options on the IB market.
