The issue is strictly with plastic microfiber. Anything organic breaks down, including clothing. So try to buy less but higher quality natural clothes and sea-life will thank you. Also you won't sweat as much and humans will be happy too.

That was an incredibly irresponsible cboice for the washing machine companies to make. They could have instead made it easy to change, with a disclaimer about environmental necessity of it, and leave the customer to be irresponsible instead.

They could have made more money by selling filters and adding failsafes to prevent operation without them.
If they call it a feature and tell you it gets your clothes cleaner, customers would want the filter.
Also you can sell them filters. Missed money making opportunity there.
These weren't as simple as replacing or cleaning the filter. this was a get a new washing machine or pay $500 every week or two for a technician.
I'd think the technology exists to deal with it (cyclonic separation seems obvious enough), but it's up to manufacturers to implement it. Might be something like patent encumbrance or who knows what keeping them from pursuing it though.
They are collecting samples with buckets suspended by deteriorating ropes. Isn’t that a potential confounding source of these fibers? They probably thought if this already

Only if the rope is synthetic. A microfiber of any other material can naturally break down in the environment, but synthetic materials never break down.
That could be how they keep the numbers coming in, to help keep the funding flowing.

Will Pack I have to say I don't know much about politics in the USA, but in europe it's pretty clear that money is the key factor. Germany made promises to reduce co2 emissions by much (don't know how much exactly, but they failed to do anything in the right direction since the paris agreement in 2016). Now they were planning to destroy a forest for COAL!..... I'm pretty sure that if nothing changes in the way politics work, money will be the most important factor for them.

I had no idea it was this bad, I feel so ashamed. I actually live in the countryside and have my own bio system and I use bio soaps etc.. But knowing that all that micro fiber is in the ocean is terrible.

Are these microfibers less dense than water by volume? If so wouldn't that mean they would float to the top??? Do they absorb some water to allow them to sink?

Bought some pajamas at Walmart 3 months ago. They shredded all over my house into little balls that stuck like glue to everything till they disintegrated.
Most filters may not catch particles that small anyways. They could probably add a centrifugal separator to laundry machines to help trap smaller particles during the rinse and drain cycles, and then there'd be a drum canister you'd have to empty. And that would be less prone to clogging than a usual filter as well. More or less it works like dust separation does on bagless vacuum cleaners, so it's not like a completely unknown technology.

I thought of this issue some time ago... like not to this extent but like when at a restaurant they wipe the wet plates with a piece of cloth which attaches the cloth's microfibres to the plate where the food is served and mixes with the food we eat and eventually finds its way to our gut!! but this right here is scary that all water bodies contain microfibre!!

This video reminds me of that lady trying to sell me a $4000 vacuum. The 3 and a half hour demo was phenomenal every micro fibre in the carpet, couch and bed was sucked out, nothing close to what my vacuum can do. Unfortunately for her in the end I said no but thanks for vacuuming the place.

They never explained IF the microfibers are having a negative impact! They just collected samples and said they will investigate further. I'm glad someone is looking into this but I have my doubts about it being dangerous.

It's actually pretty dang hard to solve this environmental issue. You would actually have to put some major polyester using companies to bankruptcy, like H&M. Plus, microfiber are cheap to make, making it cheap apparel. Nobody would be willing to give up cheap clothing!

Don’t try and bring chemtrails here. Unlike microfibers, chemtrails are scientifically implausible due to the huge dispersion over a very extensive area (ever thought about why fumigation aircraft fly so low?), and contrails have been thoroughly inspected copious times for the chemicals the conspiracists claim there could be, with no results. Water, on the other hand, hadn’t been inspected for microfibers yet.

Most bottled water isn't filtered that well. Also, microplastics make it through the filters and they are larger than microfibres

For starters we can mandate that all food grade applications of water go through that microfiber filter. If we can't filter the oceans we can at least filter water intake (/or outtake) treatment facilities or something.

Its 2018, Dumping is so 1950’s we have the technologies to filter correctly and recycle or even use plasmas when necessary to incinerate any dangerous substances. Sounds like there is a lot of speculation of what effect micro fibers may have, if any, at this point.
Big corporations won't allow that, too much money involved in finding that out and making clothes from natural fibres instead of plastic clothes. If they do find out that it has detrimental effects, they'll massage the data.

Skin is one of the biggest organs absorbing the particles of fibers onto the skin. Sebum sweat and dead skin cells buildup with these fibers on the dermis.
