Pinguecula and ptergium are caused by uv exposure and also windy or sandy environments. The reason why these sunglasses are no good is that they do not block 100% UV. This is why a hat and sunglasses that block 100% of UV light are important.

2 things...1. There are very few sunglasses made in America. The majority of brand's lenses are made by Italy's Luxottica. 2. All polycarbonate, regardless of color or quality, will block UV rays. The tint is what blocks the visible light only.

They still have to be made to meet American Sales standard to be sold here though so it doesn't matter actually where they're made it matters where they're made to go because I guarantee you the sunglasses the company makes for other countries is a hell of a lot cheaper than the ones they make for America

Worked at lens crafters for 16 years. I can confirm that Luxottica's lenses are safe for the sun. Polycarb is the only lens I suggested for people who wear their glasses most of the day. and RX sunglasses are worth it. They even have a UV tester in most locations so you can see the amount of UV light going through. Legit eyewear stores will sell quality, safe sun wear.

In the 80’s, almost no sunglasses sold here in Australia had UV protection (Unless you spent a fortune at an optometrist.) as it wasn’t a thing yet. Then they realised what the UV rays were doing, and that wearing sunglasses made your pupils open more, letting more UV in than if you went without sunglasses. So now, it is in the Standards all sunglasses must be a certain UV protection factor, and all us 80’s kids are waiting to see if we are going to develop early cataracts or go blind.

As a person that worked as an Ophthalmologist assistant in clinic, these are called Pinguecula.
They are a result of irritation of the conjunctiva of the eyes caused by sun exposure, wind and dust.
Though harmless, they can cause eye dryness and irritation and generally not aesthetically pleasing.
When your eyes are continually aggressively exposed with no protection , the Pinguecula can grow into the direction of the pupil of the eye to be what’s called a Pterygium aka Surfer’s Eye.
The symptoms of Pinguecula are more aggravated in this case and this can only be removed in surgery but there’s a chance it will grow back.
If there’s something I learnt working there is wear proper sun protection when outdoors. Before that I had constant eye dryness and irritation and I was starting to develop these. Now they’re less red and less noticeable.

Second, branded sunglasses will offer best protection. Check for the label that indicates UVA 400 or 100% protection against UVA and UVB.
You can also get protective lens fitted onto frames at an optometrist, prescription sunglasses are a plus if you have some vision adjustments needed.
You can also test your sunglasses using a UV light in a dark room. If they give off a bluish purple light or block the light they’re good to go.

Good sunglasses have polycarbonate lenses. Polycarbonate Intrinsically blocks almost all UV with a fairly sharp cutoff at ~400nm. For cheaper sunglasses, the lenses are likely acrylic which lets UVA through.
Also worth noting, reputable brand safety glasses are made of polycarbonate, don't cost much, are designed to cover your entire eyes, can come in sleek tinted varieties, and are not hard to find with UV ratings. So hint hint nudge nudge if you're on a budget.

4th year optometry student here. Shes referring to pingueculas. They are the conjunctival tissue getting too much UV radiation. Uv blocking sunglasses should fix this but i say never cheap out on sunglasses. They are very valuable, especially if youre pale like her. I personally love maui jim but you can get good stuff way cheaper. Keep your eyes safe folks
Edit: there are surgeries to fix this but they have a high recurrence rate. New procedures are promising though

So I have noticed that a couple of pair of cheap sunglasses that I bought that said that they're 100% polarized UV protection we're not at all polarized and there's a way you can test this you take two pairs of sunglasses and you hold the winds in front of each other and you rotate one of the lenses 90° and if the lens does not get darker to the point where you can no longer see through it as you rotate it then it's not really polarized and it will not protect your eyes and there are lots of sunglasses that do not do this so that means they're not polarized and they will not protect your eyes from the UV rays

Bet its pterygium. Pterygium is a raised, fleshy, triangular-shaped growth on your eye's conjunctive. Long-term exposure to UV light is the main cause. Your eyes may be red, swollen and irritated in mild cases. If pterygium grows, your vision may be blocked or blurred. Make sure you're sunglasses are polarized and also wear a hat when out in the sun. I have a lot of surfer and lifeguard friends in Hawaii that also have this eye condition. It can be cut out but it usually grows back if you keep on having sun exposure.

They are pingueculas. Pterygium grow closer to the junction of the sclera (white part) and the colored part of the eye and yes...can progress into the corneal structure. Pinguecula stay put on the white part but can definitely grow bigger and cause irritation.

Oakley SI ballistic M frame alpha or nothing else. The biggest problem I had with the $15 to $20 gas station sunglasses was that they wouldn't last a week or two before being scratched up from just cleaning them. Yes, I used proper lens wipes. So after getting tired of constantly spending money to replace the cheap gas station sunglasses, I went to the Cabela's nearest to me(about 2 hours) and tried on sunglasses until I hit on the ones that fit my face the best. The Oakley SI ballistic M frame alpha was the ticket. Now I can go the better part of a year before I have to replace just the lens and reuse the frame. All in all. it’s not the actual sunglasses that damaged her eyes, but rather how the mistaken belief in “protection” changed how she behaved while wearing them.
when we go out in the bright sun without sunglasses, our bodies naturally behave in a way to protect our eyes, such as squinting or needing to look away after a while.
but her sunglasses tinted the sun without actually providing any uv protection, so she was more comfortable with looking at bright lights/objects for extended periods of time. so everything was less bright, but still potentially damaging.
so while the sunglasses didn’t directly dye her eyes, if she did not have them her eyes would likely not be yellow

As a person that worked as an Ophthalmologist assistant in clinic, these are called Pinguecula.
They are a result of irritation on the conjunctiva of the eyes caused by sun exposure, wind and dust.

You want to make sure the sunglasses you buy are polarized. This blocks out half of the light rays that meet ur eyes and actually provide protection. To confirm theyre polarized, if u tilt ur glasses sideways and look at any sort of electronic screen, the light from the screen should dim/go dark as u turn ur head/glasses. This is how u know ur glasses are polarized.

The brown spots on ur eyes are just sunburns on ur eyes. Theyre basically permanent and occur when u dont wear sunglasses/polarized sunglasses.

Idk but I have had this and I never go out in the sun because I have a skin condition. I'm pretty sure this can be a result from dry/bloodshot eyes. It's kind of like when a bruise heals. I stare at a computer for work and I can get bloodshot eyes where my eyes dry out from not blinking enough.

You don't shade your eyes as much or protect them BC your cheap sunnies give the illusion of dampening the glare but aren't. It's counterproductive.

Expensive sunglasses often are the same. You need to buy some that actually block UV. Polarized are often really good.

I buy these Berkley Fishing sunglasses that are polarized and 100% UV light blocking. I found them in Walmart at the fishing section. They are 10$. Whenever I go on a trip or something and I forgetthem, I just buy a new pair. I have a couple pairs now.

In Australia you can get perfectly good sunglasses at any pharmacy where they sell Cancer Council glasses (anti skin cancer from sun exposure). They are all high rated against UVA and UVB and many are also polaroids, usually a bit more expensive but worth it, especially for driving. They have good glasses for kids too. Remember the old slogan 'Slip, Slop, Slap'? So slip on sun protective clothing, slop on water resistant, broad spectrum, SPF30 or higher sunscreen regularly if you’re in the sun for long periods and slap on a broad-brimmed hat. I'd stay in a shady spot wearing the Skin Cancer shades you got at the pharmacy or the Cancer Council shop where they sell lots of sun resistant swimwear and hanging out in summer wear

With that one, when the eyes get too ho or irritated by something like sand or dust in the wind, body produces thick layer to protect the eyes.
Washing the eyes with ice water can help reduce the progression/ take out the redness if the eyes turn red.

There are no laws in the US stating what U.V. Protection sunglasses must have. There aren’t even laws that enforce manufacturers actually producing sunglasses that provide the protection they state they provide.

Also MAKE SURE your sunglasses have Anti-Reflective coating on the INSIDE, not just the outside...I have cataracts in my 30s because the UV rays that enter through the sides bounced off the inside of my sunglasses and into my eyes. My doc explained that when your eyes are behind sunglasses the pupils dilate because they're "in shadow" which makes them MORE vulnerable to issues like this! Also this is much more of a risk if you have very light eyes!

    • @emilyjgreenfield
      @emilyjgreenfield 3 месяца назад

Also a good way to tell if you have AR coating on the inside is to see if the a white lamp reflecting on the inside looks white (no coating) or blue/greenish (coating). Although just make sure when you buy 'em to be extra safe!

Good sunglasses will allow you to see in overcast conditions just fine. Don't skimp on your eyes folks. 2 and 300$ sunglasses don't seem that bad if it keeps your eyes from failing

Cheap sunglasses(and actually a fair amount of expensive fashion glasses) also tend to bend light weird and can screw your vision up over time. Buy glasses that are well made, not just well marketed. Optical science is hard. Tinting glass or plastic is not. Know the difference.
