    We had a a supposed buyback,here in NZ after the shootings in Chch.
    It is not a buyback as the police named it.
    The govt/police haven't owned the gun previously so it isn't a "buyback"
    It is a gungrab,from law abiding and decent members of public.
    Interesting to note how many people die from smoking and car related activity,but the govt do nothing because of GST grab on excise duty.
    Our last piss poor govt brought out a "voluntary" gun registry.
    The super computer the police use is like an information highway for clever criminals and my details won't be on any criminals shopping list.
    The govt work for us not the other way around.

    If the politicians haven't changed since 2021 they will use those who rush to hand them in as justification to vote for the change. The last thing any politician wants is having to answer calls about the new change and why they are changing it. They will use the data on the buyback to say the public wants it. Worked for Ministers and CEO's and many parts of the Government trust me they do not want those calls. It means they have to work for what they are paid.

If you're a contractor in controlling "pests" you can have over 10, if you're a primary producer the limit is ten and an individual householder can only have 5 firearms. Moreover, gun owners must have more secure storage and location is now a new rule.

      Why would they? They're a key part of the problem and a key cause of many of the restrictions throughout Australia. SSAA love doing "behind the scenes work" as they always say - every time they say this things get worse. In my personal opinion, they seem to be trying to ensure they have a constant guaranteed revenue stream by virtue of getting laws changed to force people to attend ranges without considering the consequences at all.
      On the east coast, SSAA are trying to mandate practical shooting tests for ALL licences (these will likely become mandatory either annually or at every renewal) claiming "improving public safety".
      In VIC, SSAA are working with the govt to mandate SSAA provided hunter training as a requirement before being able to get firearm or hunting licences - they've got this for duck shooting from 2025 and they've recently developed field hunting and deer hunting courses with the govt (SSAA wouldn't even consult their own deer hunting club SSAA Deerstalkers and use their already recognised hunter training course, SSAA spent likely a small fortune creating their own course with "expert" consultants). They've also created courses that council officers, zoo keepers, airport animal control officers, kangaroo cullers and rangers are already required by govt to do, and they've already made a "nationally accredited firearm safety course" that only they are permitted to deliver nationwide.
      The biggest issues aside from the monopoly on being able to deliver the courses are:
      * SSAA don't have the ability to get 250,000 people through such courses every year or even every 3-5yrs
      * There aren't enough ranges (simulated field) or Range Officers in the entire east coast to handle the existing mandatory practical shooting test for duck shooting that starts next year
      * Many people aren't going to sit through mandatory classes, do online modules, etc. just to do what they've always done - many will either give up or go "off-ticket"
      * The cost - each course SSAA offer is several hundred dollars per person, has limited seats per course and requires travel to their "training facility" at their range in Little River (VIC) or in hard to get to areas in NSW and QLD.
      SSAA seem to be cutting off their nose to spite their faces - they think they'll make a fortune but they forget that they don't have the means to deliver what they're after and that LAFO's and hunters hate the infinite addition of regulations and "courses" given the volume of courses one already needs to do in order to do anything.

    I don’t think I could do a 5 gun limit. That is not that much when you consider the different types of guns. Let’s say you have a .22 rifle, and a .22 handgun. Now a 12 gauge shotgun, and a deer rifle. Now add a 9mm handgun and you’re at 5 and you don’t have anything that exotic. If you want some competition guns that are generally only used for competitions you are out of luck.

      You couldn't even shoot Combined Services Discipline (CSD) properly. To do so requires at an absolute minimum and causing you to miss 8 other CSD competitions:
      * A military rifle from the Axis and one from the Allies (that's two firearms)
      * A military training rifle (22LR, etc.) (that's a third firearm)
      * A 'long range'/sniper/scoped rifle (that's a fourth firearm)
      * A military handgun from the Axis and one from the Allies (that's two firearms - so now the count is six)
      That's the bare minimum and that's already six firearms. Thus its not even possible to properly shoot CSD with the stupid 5 firearm limit. Theoretically, even if they permitted six as a minimum you'd be unable to shoot the other 8 CSD competitions and you'd be unable to ever go hunting as they're trying to not permit 'dual use' of firearms.

    I'd tell my elected representatives that I don't want my taxes used to buy guns from law abiding citizens under the nonsensical claim that it'll reduce crime or increase public safety. Criminals are not selling government their guns. As a lawful citizen, selling the government your firearms to prevent violent crime is stupid. Is the government going to offer you $500 at the local police station if you participate in their voluntary castration program to prevent rape? There is apparently no limit to how stupid government can be.

    The only problems that involve firearms are criminal activity and mental health issues. If the authorities did their job and keep criminals off the streets and actually help those with mental health issues, the "problems" would be reduced. The problem is not law abiding citizens but we are the ones being penalised while criminals ignore the law. Afterall, murder is against the law but it still happens. Countries that have strict gun laws, still have murders. The criminals just use other tools to commit crime.

      This Western Australian government makes it's own rules about firearms as it goes along. It does mention any errors the Police Minister Papalia made last year in relation to a 50 calibre Sniper Rifle and ammunition. The Police minister and police could have approached the Army for the use of such a weapon, however, they chose not too but purchased a new rifle. To make things worse, they requested the use of the Pearce Airbase aircraft landing runway to be used as a firing range. The airbase commander advised them it was impractical due to the number of aircraft landing and departing. The Police Minister Papalia along with Police personnel arrived at Pearce Airbase ready to fire the 50 calibre rifle, the RAAF Commander had to order them off the airfield and suggested another site suitable for firing tests of the rifle. No-one was reprimanded for any wrong doing. Shortly afterwards the then Premier McGowan resigned from his position stating he was too tired to keep working at that level. Months later, the Police Commissioner resigned his position for a cosy government job. As for the gun buyback, I believe the maximum amount payable is $1,000, in some cases with the bigger bore rifles, a person will lose money by handing it in. Friends have rifles which cost over $4,000 fully kitted up... they'll lose three grand. Most assults in Western Australia are not firearm related but stabbings, bashing, fence posts, screwdrivers etc etc. Mr Papalia did not state anything regarding unlicensed firearms which many people get from the black market. There is also a mental test a licensed firearm owners need to go through which may put the cat amongst the pigeons with another organisation which use firearms daily. People are already asking if these workers will be submitted to the same rule?? Western Australia licensed firearm owners are being dubbed as criminals by the Police Minister Papalia. Why isn't he hitting the unlicensed firearm owners with the same rules???

    Just one thing you said - that the Police might say hypothetically - “look at all the Firearms we got off the streets”. Always the excuse / pat on the back the authorities use with Amnesty’s / Buy Backs.
    Virtually ZERO Firearms are removed “from the streets” because only Law Abiding Citizens hand in unwanted / unregistered Firearms. The Criminals still have their collections of illegal Firearms to do with as they wish, so virtually ZERO increase in safety for the Public or the Police, but at a very significant cost to the Public.
