BTW Mike, the hurricanes were willing to match any contract that Guenztel wanted. In fact, according to their local beat reporter Cory Lavalette, this is how it went down:
In the middle of last week, Guenztel's agent asked the Hurricanes if they were willing to do an 8x8. Early morning on Thursday, Tulsky agreed to that term and was willing to structure the contract however his agent wanted.
After agreeing to do the deal, Guenztel ghosted the Hurricanes until SATURDAY (Day two of the draft) where he told them he did not want to sign there. Conveniently, on this same day we saw Tampa Bay clearing cap by trading Sergachev.
The next day, on Sunday, they traded his rights to TBL for a future third round pick
All in all, Carolina got screwed more than anything, and in my opinion, it is clear and blatant tampering by the Lightning.

I like what the Devils did but not enough to put them in the top tier as a fan.
Devils didn't fill a hole in their top 6 yet and don't look to have cap space to.do.so. I also think they got hosed on the Cotter trade (though something strange may be going on with Schmid given that he was no QO'ed there). They also undersold Marino even if they made up for it by not giving too much to get an upgrade in Pesce (note the lack of NTC clauses in his contract).
You could say that I'm.quibbling but they did come into this off season with a fantastic cap structure and I think it's worth holding Fitz to a standard of needing to fill in every hole to earn the top grade. He could still fill that hole with a trade, but it will be tough to do so with where his cap space is right now. Instead he brought in Tatar (at a great contract bang for buck) a career mid-6 player (production more third line) who never does anything in the playoffs and is coming off of a rough season.

Too low on Philly, getting mitchkov over 2 years early is such a huge win for them, then also not making any horrible free agent adds, luchanko was a reach but it wasn’t egregious. If you calculate it out helenius and luchanko would have had similar point production if they played in the nhl last year. Luchanko is 17 and led his ohl team in scoring, his team was not good either he was their best player at 17. They also got good value picks in Powell and bruhonen. Berglund was an interesting pick but their off-season was no less than good/solid. They aslo added another first round pick in 2025 which is supposed to be a deep draft so I would argue it was good

Im not a fan of your placement of the pens. They got good value with their 2 2nd round picks, they got a 2nd with Hayes for nothing (Hayes is overpaid at 3.5 mill but its not even that bad, he could bounce back) and they traded Reilly Smith for more than the gave up to get him (which non of us thought was going to be possible). They made some pretty low risk signings to improve the bottom 6 which was the problem last year. Its nothing fantastic, but I think its better than both teams in bad as well as Detroit, Buffalo and Philly.
