I honestly thought that they did well with Lightning Dust’s character, even in the end of the episode. She’s already shown that she has little patience when it comes to others holding her back, and will not hesitate to jeopardize their safety in order to accomplish her goal. I felt that her being straight up negligent with Scootaloo is something that was in line with her character as she had the mindset of “forget safety, the show must go on”.

In all seriousness, this episode blew me away. I did not expect Lightning Dust to come back, Spitfire chewing the scenery, nor did i expect Nick to throw all the punches with Scootaloo's reason as to why she looked up to her and ended up joining the Washouts. Hell both her and Rainbow had legitimately good reasons, even if the latter went the wrong way about it. Still, if anything i feel the surrogate sister bond ended up stronger after this episode because of how understanding they were of another in the end. Though if i had one nitpick is that Scootaloo must have terrible memory to not remember who Lightning Dust is especially since she talked about her to Dash's parents (who made a cameo). But that's about it, writing wise it's still a solid outing and it has become my favorite episode of Season 8 so far.

The problem with Spitfire's drill sergeant routine, Josh, is that you experienced the real thing. The script writers and voice actors almost certainly haven't, so they just have stories and comic exaggerations to go on. Plus, well, it's a kid's show, so having her *really* act like a drill sergeant would probably scar the target audience for *life.* I also think the similarity to those heavy-handed PSAs ("this is your brain on drugs" my brain is an egg sunny side up?) is intentional.
I do like your suggestions, though.
But doesn't the ending follow the lack of safety concerns they showed from the start? Aside from the disclaimer, the Washouts themselves expressed complete disdain for safety procedures. So to me it seems to be completely in character.

    A few observations:
Yona and Ocellus were in the crowd as well, but not with the others. They were in one of the other bleachers.
    Where were Scootaloo's guardians?
I'm with Ari on both Spitfire in this episode, and Rainbow generally. Spitfire was just cringy in this one. Apparently it was a SNL parody. And Rainbow is my least favorite of the Mane Six. She's better used in fanfics, but in the show her flaws spend way more time on-screen than her virtues.
The scene where Scootaloo cries out "I can't fly!" was amazing and sad.
Twilight and Rainbow were well handled in this episode.
The last thing, the stunt with Scootaloo doesn't really work. It's only dangerous because she can't fly, but the audience doesn't know that, they would look at Scootaloo, see a pegasus and not see the point.

When the episode aired I was rather curious if this was going to be for Rainbow Dash learning that not everything is about her and that everyone gets to decide what they like the most. I just never expected that this would also be a lesson for scootalo to learn. You know after seeing the leader I sort of knew that lightning dust was coming back because of the wings and the tail flapping in the wind, i’m glad that they’re dealing with a few loose ends with some of the not so great characters. But what I really wish before the Series ends is FOR SCOOTALO TO FLY ALREADY!!!! I MEANT COME ON!!! I was a bit disappointed that they didn't, but considering her character, this actually kinda fit more. Cause she just doesn't care about the safety of others. Like in Wonderbolts Academy when Rainbow hurt her wing during Capture The Flag, Lightning Dust didn't notice or care. She was just in it for the rush.

I think so since how the season final ended being in Tartarus with Tirek. Also have you notice these things like Chrysalis returning with evil plan only to have it backfire in her face and now planning a new one and now Lightning dust returning to rub something in Rainbow's face only to backfire and now declaring enemies. With all these hints I'm thinking that Cozy and Tirek will escape from Tartaus and forming a villain alliance with both the major and minor villains of the series like Chrysalis, Pony of shaows, Suri Polomare, Wind Rider, Svengallop, Gladmane, Diamond Dogs, Dr. Caballeron, Ahuizotl, Garble, and The Sirens. I'm including Flim and Flam since they are semi- good terms with Applejack and Fluttershy since they helped them and Storm king and King Sombra are the only villains in the series to kick the bucket. But if they decide to some how to bring them back that will be epic.

8:40 I don't think they were going for the intimidation factor, necessarily. It was more comedic than anything. This Spitfire moment is based off a Saturday Night Live skit called "Living in a Van by the River".

I like Firebrand's idea. But what if there was a twist? What if Chrysalis was disguised as Lightning dust to endanger Scootaloo. And then at the end, after the Mane 6 and Scootaloo left, Lightning Dust comes back and says "Woah! What's I miss? By the way, did Scootaloo do her trick yet?"

For me, this was "No Second Prances" done right. I mean, even though Rainbow Dash was clearly overstepping bounds, the episode takes the time to make it clear that she isn't the bad guy in this. Also, my sister once told me that you know you're slowly turning into your parents when you sympathize with the "grown up" more than you do the kid, and she was right.
I thought Spitfire's schtick was wonderful. I get it. She's not intimidating enough to pull it off, but her lines sound like something straight out of a salty seasoned veteran, especially when she starts mocking Scootaloo for thinking that she's invincible. I've noticed that a lot of older people, especially the salty ones, love going out of their way to shatter those kinds of illusions in younger people.

Right off the bat before starting this video I will tell you I love the show for one thing my favorite pony admits to having a disability yes it’s mostly because I have one myself but it’s a fact that she’s OK That makes it 1000% more awesome

  • @strandedgeek

Kitty! =^.^=Anywho, actually Spitfire's lines were kind of funny to me but that's cause I got the reference. They were doing a version of a Chris Farley SNL gag poking fun at motivational speakers, for an anti-drug message, "You'll be living in a van down by the river." However what was funnier about that that failed with Spitfire was the fact that Chris' character introduced himself as "My name is Matt Foley, I am a motivational speaker, & I live in a van down by the river." So the reference was funny but that kind of negates the message and makes Spitfire look like an idiot. And yeah the black&white ending I think came off as a bit of an after-school special thing where it says Scoots is falling with a bad crowd and sadly learns the hard way of "wow the people I thought were cool and act dangerous, really are dangerous." I've seen lots of shows do it better.

I don’t blame you Aramau! RD is my least favorite character of not just the mane 6 but the series overall but this episode doesn’t make me like her less. This episode just make me confused on who side to root for Scootaloo or RD? While most people say this is a great episode, I just think of it as an odd episode for me.

Won't happen. They never bring an antagonist back in back to back seasons, ever. Look at Iron Will, Trixie, Flim and Flam, and now Lightning Dust. They alway let at least a season or two pass between appearances.
And since next season is the last one...

It's interesting how many times the addition of one line could salvage a story. For example, in Yakity Sax, the change of one line at the end could have made for a much better lesson (see my comment on that review for more details), and here, you noted that adding one line to the scene with the rocket sled would have made it clear that the lack of safety was out of character for the Washouts.
All in all, I say that this is a good episode (though not great), and yes, now that I think about it, it is interesting that Scootaloo finally admitted that she can't fly. I wonder if the show writers are willing to go any further with this. Namely, is she ever going to be able to fly, or is it now confirmed that Scootaloo is disabled?

Season 8 has had a quite a few duds, but after Yakity Sax, it's been pretty good. I think my theory was right that they wanted to get Yakity Sax out of the way early to keep a longer streak of good episodes.
