I thought this video would let me know if a cello can be tuned like the bottom four strings of a guitar or bass. Will it hurt the cello to retune the strings: C to E, G to A, the D would stay the same, and A to G?
The snag is the string tension - Doing the real bass guitar E-A-D-G felt like a lot of strain on an instrument with no truss rod and held together with glue. If you buy the 4th string sets, it's ok, but they are mega expensive - so after experimenting, that's how I ended up with what I have. P
I relate to your knowledge, insights and talent. Perhaps we’re a similar age? I studied piano as a child for many years, but played guitar from age 14 because I could carry a guitar to a gig 😂 I also played bass in a big band and a cello in high school orchestra for many years, but I was never very good. Whereas demand for bass and guitar (especially if you could read music) was quite high in rock/funk/punk and indie bands. Insight into the AKG 414 and the alt tuning is great! 👍
Excellent video. Thanks for taking time to create and share. Question though: can’t you just play notes on two strings like a power chord on guitar tuned in 4ths to get your 5ths? It’s the same thing or would it sound off or go against technique? I’m just a novice on cello obviously.
Really? I thought the best was the e906! I thought it was more complimentary to the sound of a compromised cello. The 414 was very similar actually. I thought the U87 exposed the instrument's flaws. Of course the 57 just plain sucked. I don't even record with my 57 anymore, I just use it for live vocals with its foam screen.

If you want to get the cello to sound better, you could send it to a luthier and have it checked on.
I’m happy with the cello, just me that’s the problem!
