Finally An Honest Video On Julius Caesar

- Ok here we go... Gaius Julius Caesar. The Roman... emperor? Consul? Dictator? God? I mean when I started this video, I know this was going to be an epic, but a 45 minute video? Come on... I didn't expect that. But Julius Caesar is simply that dude. The guy single-handedly jump-started the Roman Empire, which, at the time of his ascension was still the Roman Republic. So why is it, that Gaius Julius Caesar was able to completely change the trajectory of an a republic that was entirely set in its ways?
That's what I want to explore in this Julius Caesar biography, and yes, I do apologize that I just used the word 'explore'.... point is: I want to talk about Julius Caesar. Period. And after that... maybe I want to talk about some other Roman emperors, but let's start with the man himself, the man they call Imperator, the man the Romans declared a God, and the man whose name was adopted by every Roman emperor since, and even by rulers outside of ome:
Episode 4 Of 'Blood: The Period(s) Of Conquerors - Imperator Gaius Jules Caesar
Notes:
Man... history videos are... a pain. There's a lot less embellishing allowed when it comes to history, because you know... it's all factual and that. No fun. Also, the bigger the person, the more historians weighed in on a party they are hundreds of years too late for - or in the case of Julius Caesar 2000 years too late for. But... I won't let that stop me.
Just do know: While I am 100% confident that I am giving you a very detailed outlook on who Gaius Julius Caesar was, and why he is special, if this video peaked your interest... do feel encouraged to venture out into the World Wide Web and do your own research on the man that started Rome as we know it.
Get All My Artwork & Support The Channel:
I get a lot of questions about my artwork and where it’s from or rather who draws it. Well the answer is that I create it - I don’t draw it. I use AI to create the artwork, using specific prompts, specific style influences from 18th and 19th century artists, and I spend about 10 hours per video just on the artwork. Each video has roughly double the artwork of what you actually see in the video, so a lot of it is unused. The good news here though is that you can get all that artwork on my Patreon - the artwork I do use, and the artwork I don’t use. Plus, by subscribing to my Patreon you are making a major contribution to Briefed and helping me to keep this channel going, because this is my full time job and the survival of the channel and quality of the videos greatly depends on said support. In return for supporting, you get more than the artwork though - you also get exclusive videos and producer credit, as well as access to a producer group that gets to vote on thumbnails, gets behind the scenes etc.
If you choose to become a Patron - thank you. I do not take it for granted.

I used a lot of clips from Rome's HBO, and everything that wasn't Rome was either Netflix' 'Barbarians' or Ridley Scott's 'Gladiator'.

My favorite historical subject - Julius Caesar. One thing you should've included is how Caesar preferred to forgive and pardon his rivals and put them back into power under his thumb, rather than kill or imprison them (including Brutus). This was his undoing in the end.
This compared to his adversary who chose to savagely murder captured Caesars men. Caesar was a humanitarian ahead of his time when compared to others of his time, propaganda or not.
bro he says that in the video
yeah but to a Roman sensibility being shown mercy by your enemy was worse than dying with honor
@@woodsmand Not sure about that. In Caesar's war commentary the tone indicated that the killing of his captured men by Pompey's men seemed barbaric.
@@bubblelyte401 Of course it wasn't XD, it was magnanimous and meant to make it easier for enemies to consider surrender.
He was trying to shorten the civil war by making himself seem like he could be talked to, like he'd pardon you if you came over.
Ask the Gauls how "humanitarian" he was.
when he said “we’ve all been there.. some of us are still there”
i felt that
brother. still feeling it too haha
@@Briefed_Mythology The fuck you mean an “honest” video? So every other video has been distorting history? 🤣🤦♂️ dude I like the video (most of it) but what’s with the title?
Oh my god 😂😂😂😂😂 I’m still freaking there 😂😂😂😂😂, thanks for brighting up my day
This biography is the best I have ever watched. You need to “roast” Napoleon and a few other dudes. Pure genius.
@@Saber23I was wondering that 😂. I thought he might have meant “complete” as there are a lot of videos which mention him and talk about parts of his life but maybe not so many which talk about his life as a whole biography. And this does seem to be jam-packed.
Colleen McCollough wrote the most in depth novels about Julius Caesar, and the death of the Roman Republic. I'm sure you're aware of this, though. For those of you interested- these are historical novels, with so much erudition involved, that I am certain she got things right more often than not, when creating the dialogue to certain unknown conversations. She knows these people intimately. A biologist who loved all things Roman her whole life- spent her retirement writing this amazing series. Her knowledge of Latin, and Roman customs are encyclopedic. The epilogues to these novels are massive, and chock full of factual information.
I read her book: first man in rome.
HOLY POPE!! That is an amazing book. Using found diaries to model the story, well educated guesses of the missing bits. What great read.
Reminded me of how charles dickens is able to give soo much life to his characters.
I plan on reading the rest of her series.
@@nicetomeetme5150 They are a prominent addition to any library. You can read them over, and over, too. There's always another layer of nuance to pick up on. I'm shocked these aren't considered classics, along the lines of The History of the Decline, and Fall of the Roman Empire. Her books are infinitely more readable than Gibbon's doorstop.
@@TexasTrey i agree on the lack of recognition for her work. Its almost criminal.
I havent read more due to more work, more additions to the family etc. But i def will.
.
This is literally my favourite channel now.
You and me both
As with all historical videos, I find myself needing to point out the flaws. Julius Caesar did not sleep with men. Every single mention of this were from his enemies, especially the one about having an affair with King Nicomedes. The entire rumor was started during Caesars Gallic Triumph many years later with "Gallias Caesar subegit, Caesarem Nicomedes". It was a political move to undermine him publicly because he was becoming too popular with the people and they feared another rise of the populous party or that he would try to become dictator.
So many errors in this as well as some glaring omissions. Like the pirates were holed up on the North African coast that had so many outcrops and bays that nobody could ever find them. That's why they laughed when he said he'd come back and crucify them all
Caesar chose a landmark and then created a definition of inlet, then counted how many from the landmark to where the pirates entered.
Plus I believe he was appointed Pontifex Maximus by Sulla in his youth which precluded him from military or political service. I can't remember who allowed him to leave that position, but he got out at around 19 and earned the grass crown by his fellow legionaries in his first military campaign by single handedly saving his legion from certain defeat.
Really, the only thing that keeps annoying me is the way he keeps mispronouncing "Caesar".
@@mattjack3983 Its his accent.
@@mattjack3983 its probably pronounced more accurately the way he's pronounced it than how you're doing.
Why would it be used to undermine him when homosexuality wasn't something frowned upon or controversial in Rome? You are looking at it with modern sensibility, which is a mistake. Powerful men having male lovers was common in ancient times, not only Rome but also Greece, Macedonia etc.

First video I’ve watched from you, and I have to to say, it has been a blast. The dry comedy mixed with the delivery of straight facts is a really enjoyable thing to relax with.

This dude on briefed is a legend bro. I pray your channel takes off man thank you for these videos.
thank you brother, thank you
unfortunately i can't watch it as I find his voice insufferable
This was beautiful. Made me tear up several times. I see all these comments about how funny you are and how entertaining your videos are, but there is something truly poetic about your timing and the way you deliver, it would be a shame if you didn't cover Rome's Greatest. Honestly.
what a beautiful comment - thank you. thank you truly. it only motivates me to keep up the work. thanks.

This is the best video of history I've seen in years, the art of paintings is perfect & eye watering, your mix with modern slang & clips of films/TV is humerous & relatable to a modern audience & I love the fact you take the time to not leave little details out, plus as a man I can see many can respect that you can use videos like this to teach young people who think history is boring that actually it's important and amazing just as I always wanted, I'm not only going to like, subscribe & share this video but I'm going to save it forever & tell everyone by word of mouth, thank you sir for your research, your passion, time & effort for this masterpiece 🎉
In fact, I'm confident about this video & your work that I'm writing this comment after watching only the first 15:16 minutes 😎❤

Keep the videos coming and I'm here for even longer videos !!!!
bruh the more this channel grows the longer they'll get haha. goal for 2024 is full blown field trip documentaries
I would love to see a series about the best Emperors of Rome. It would also be nice to hear your take on some of the more recent scholarship regarding the emperors Nero and “Caligula”/Gaius. I’ve been reading books about them by Anthony Berrett, Richard Holland, Edward Champlin, Thorsten Opper, and John Drinkwater, that suggest that they were actually quite good Emperors, and that their terrible reputations stem from upsetting the patricians by siding with the plebs too frequently.
that’s something i ofren wonder ik history? How many times have the real history been depicted through the tongues of biased sources
@@mcfriisEvery time. This is the main struggle for historians. All of it is biased, even if merely biased towards the set of knowledge held by the writer. This is why, for every well known historical "fact," you can find historians that disagree.
A new series? Yes please!! I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work!
Your documentaries are a real pleasure to watch. Informative, reflective, with a nice line in mordant wit. Many thanks, and best wishes for the future.
The thing about Caesar and other Roman’s being gay is that. The only source we have where they discuss him being gay. Came from transcripts of rival politicians calling him gay. So take it with a grain of salt. It was more than likely an insult meant to slander him which can give us a glimpse into what the Roman’s actually thought about homosexuality
For some reason this guy calls at least one man gay in everyone of his videos I've seen
We haven’t had a real Caesar film in decades, wake up Hollywood no more Napoleon, there is only Caesar
actually surprised that Hollywood hasn't tackled this topic with more effort
I hope they don’t. They will just ruin it
I love Napoleon. That movie was an abomination. We already have a good Napoleon movie from like the 80s. Mance Rayder as Caesar in the Rome show is the best we got sadly.
My guy, your content is spot on.
Your humor is, impeccable.
And the story-building, excellent.

I loved your vid. Totally knew all the aspects of the history you told but your narration was a lot of fun and well done. Happy to hear so many small details, even tracking the passing of names. You obviously took a lot of time with the edits and the script. Thanks for the great vid.
(I'm a little more partial to the hard "K"aesar pronunciation but I get why you would use what is the more common in modern American pronunciation.)
thank you, thank you, yeah I figured if I go with the hard k, I would estrange too many people who are simply not used to the name being said that way.
This sounds like a combination of anime story and real politics. Kinda sad to think that we really didn't change that much. In politics it's often is more about who's popular then anything else.
right? when I research these videos it blows my mind how much a civilization from 2000 years ago is so similar to us
Thats kind of the flaw of using popularity contests to choose representatives.
Rome was mild If you want to critize popularity Contests Look at the shitshow that was Athens ,man that was ridiculous in the Peloponnesian war what Athens constantly changing decisions, Generals and Admirals because of popularity Contests they would decide to massacred a City and 5 minutes later prevent IT from happening
Even when he got jumped by his ‘friends’ and coworkers at over 50 whilst unarmed and unarmoured he reportedly still put up a fight against a room filled with armed senators
If he’d had a weapon and armour he would’ve taken most of them with him
I mean He planned to Go to parthian and do another campaigns , in my opinion after parthia He would have groomed Octavianus AS His successor and retire but nothing IS certainly with Caesar Dude IS really alive on campaign and His famous forced marches maybe some of the tenth would follow him since they are too bored with Farm life
Senators who’ve never seen combat < Julius Caesar, sole consul of Rome. Governor of 3 provinces. Hero to the people. God to the troops who served him.
I bet some of the senators were too limp wristed to deliver a proper stab. Goofy fools. Just like many of Americans modern legislature. They clamor on and on about the sanctity of the system they inhabit. While being corrupt and self centered.

thank you brother. I'm from Germany/cameroun in terms of ethnicity, but raised in Germany and then kind of bounced around the world, and his name is zizou
Yes. This is how a good teacher weaves the details of history. You earned a subscriber.
Exactly
He actually skips a lot of details, but I guess the video would have been too long
@gabrielethier2046 That is the point. It is an art form to be able to describe an event that would take a month to teach, all while keeping your audience interested and engaged. Interested pupils, learn.
@@erolegario it's an art form to strip away context?
@gabrielethier2046 To teach you OCD wastoid. You want an in-depth class, take a college course, or read the Gallic Wars like I did. You are the very reason most younger kids are uninterested in these subjects. You are so focused on your OCD that you can't comprehend the entire purpose of engagement in teaching.
Liked the delivery. It’s cool how you didn’t shy away from his more negative actions while still acknowledging his accomplishments. Definitely a complicated person, both at times domineering and forgiving.
I mean... a lot of the reason that the Roman Emperors were typically called 'Caesar' was because after adopting Octavian, and giving him his full name. (And so Octavian's decedents were also given the Caesar family name...) More Emperors were known as Augustus (the exalted one) than Caesar (a family name), it only lasted 12 emperors.
I didnt know this.
Yea but Russian czar German kasier etc all come from the name Caesar . Caesar was so powerful his family name came to mean king in multiple languages and across different cultures
You have the best history videos I seen on RUclips in a while with your narration and editing skills I would love to see you do a video on Hannibal or Charlemagne just subscribed 👍🏾
Hannibal and Charlemagne are absolutely planned - it will be a while until I get there, but I definitely will at some point
What I like about your presentations is how it brings really interesting and impactful history about human organizational development, but dry to the non-history oriented younger listeners, a witty and modern take on this subject
The classical music, the French accent (I could be wrong it sounds french to me), the definitely NOT ai generated renaissance paintings, the education, the humor, This channel is criminally underrated

I found this very informative and amusing. Good job on the narration, Sir. 👍🏽👍🏽
Hey man, I liked the video, but I do feel the need to correct one point.
It wasn't Pompey the one who bad-mouthed Caesar while the latter was away - it was Cato the Younger, a Optimates (party opposing Caesar's Populares), a stout traditionalist and one of Caesar's bitterest political rival (not for the least because Caesar boinked Cato's sister and tricked Cato into reading outloud in the Senate a love letter from her to him).
thank you for adding that. I kind of left Cato out of my video a little bit, because it was hard to weave him into the narrative that I had set, so I appreciate you adding this 🫡

A. Worth repeating
B. I'd like to experience your version - video, audio, levity, the whole elite Briefed presentation.
There are a great set of videos of the aftermath on Kings and Generals, and how it went from republic to empire. Plus K&G has a legion (pun intended) on Caesar's wars.
Cool video! Just in case anyone wanted to know, in Latin, Caesar is pronounced with a hard C. Similar to German Kaiser.
How often do you think of Rome
It lives rent free in my head
Exactly my thought as well, but then again great video nevertheless.
Actually either. Latin Vulgaris is hard c and classical is See Sar. Pilate is the black eyed false Caesar
@@gaiusjuliuscaesar9907 wut
it's the other way around, Hard C in classic, sounds like an S in vulgar (which is why spanish, french and italian use C as either an S or CH sound) and also why Centum languages where K sounds remained hard while Satem languages became S, because Centum was pronounced Kentum, which is One hundred, and Satem is old avestan for the same number @@gaiusjuliuscaesar9907
