This song is pure Punk pop Genius - Beyond/Ahead of but also SO of its time and still so resonant today. It is right up there - what a band - The Undertones were !!!!!!
THAT RIFF!!! I cannot come up with a more powerful intro of any rock song ever than the first few bars of You Got My Number...tight, awesome, Derry mightiness.
I've been thinking about this. In my opinion, the only thing that comes close to the opening of this is 'Tommy Gun' by The Clash. That's pretty tight and punchy too.
I loved this song when it first came out and like "Teenage Kicks," it's regularly on one of my playlists. There was a lot of "criticism," about Punk being just thrashing on a few chords, but this is a smart song, particularly the "inversion" of the guitar riff at the start of each verse.. I never get fed up of great songs like this! :O)
Chris McKee Agree 💯 mate, The Undertones were a Magnificent Band, saw them four times, typical Top Of The Pops braindead audience 90% of them didn't have a clue about music, just wanted to be seen on TOTP 🤮
@@stevebowness9435 Indeed, they truly were absolutely Magnificent, as you say. I had the pleasure of seeing them five times, including their final headlining performance at the Lyceum in 1983. Pure, unadulterated, perfect pop.
@@manfredwilliams3860 Totally Agree 💯 seen them four times, all in Liverpool, Eric,s Club, Liverpool University 1979, Liverpool Empire May 1980, and finally The Royal Court Liverpool 1983, one of the best live Bands I've ever seen 💯
@@stevebowness9435 I saw them for the first time in May 1979 at the Locarno Ballroom, Coventry, and I wasn't easily impressed. Indeed, I had seen Led Zeppelin, The Clash, The Jam and many others on that very stage. So when these scruffy kids ambled on, I thought, go on then, show me what you can do! Four bars into 'Get Over You', I was hooked lined and fucking sinkered!!
I'm old enough to remember watching this performance when it first aired and my GRANDMOTHER asking me what I thought about it! I think she was impressed.......
I first saw them do this on one of those Morning Shows. Love It from the opening Chord. Rushed out to try and Buy It. Could not get It anywhere. I went Into a Record Collector's shop just on the off chance. And He said I not only got that one but I have others by them too. I bought the Lot plus the 12" of True Confessions. These were all on the small Irish Label (Not Sire) This would be around 1977 to 1978. I still have them and been told they are worth a lot of Money now. Thanks for uploading possibly the only surviving film of this Classic.
Very impressive, especially as they only released one 7" on Good Vibrations. The other records only exist in an imaginary world where this wasn't released in 1979.
Fantastic band, still perform regularly with a different lead singer, who does it in his own style and is even more flamboyant than Fergal - recommended watching if you are lucky enough to catch them.
As we all know the " True Punks " Were those who " Created There Own Image / Identity !!! And The Undertones and in " Particular Feargal Sharkey Were an " Obvious Example " Of that !! And musically the band were superb it goes without saying and hopefully the Revisionists will continue to " Extol what were " Considerable Virtues " !!! From Adrian Browne 1965
Mark Seleood.......No contest. I saw them both in their pomp, but let me tell you, if I could relive any three minutes out of my entire fucking life, it would be to see The Undertones in their full magnificent glory, playing this!!!
You might be right...I remember exactly where I was when I first saw them. Even as 9 year olds in the UK it was REALLY exciting when The Undertones appeared on TOTP.
November 2016. I pick up a poppy someone has lost. I start humming the intro to this without knowing where it's going. I mean, it was the theme tune to "Weekending", wasn't it? Then I realise. "You've dropped your poppy You've dropped your poppy Why don't you pick it. (Up)". Shows this was a hit in early November.
A great song in the same pop-punk genre as The Buzzcocks but look at the crowd...completely unable to join in the fun. I guess they didn't get it, must have been like performing in front of a flock of dead sheep.
Sou de São Paulo Brasil.
Estou com 44 anos. Amo Undertones desde os 16!
Esta banda está na playlist da minha adolescência e da minha vida!
Listen to this a long time ago still love it fast and furious 😠
I will listen to any music but I was lucky this was my teenage years i was very lucky 🎉❤😂
Punky pop, power pop, rock, however you look at this, it's an absolutely fantastic song. This band really were wonderful.
Awesome!!!
If The Undertones is not Punk then there is no such thing as Punk music.
Great song from a great band.
Best band to ever come out of Ireland , class act !
Them and Stiff Little Fingers ✌️
Not reffering to the band, Them, but they weren't bad, their singer still rated.
Great riffs, One of the greatest pop rock songs ever. Far exceeds Teenage Kicks.
This song is pure Punk pop Genius - Beyond/Ahead of but also SO of its time and still so resonant today. It is right up there - what a band - The Undertones were !!!!!!
In my opinion this song blows away teenage kicks and teenage kicks, of course is great.
I hated teenage kicks there goes normans another belter ❤
Man my best friend and l loved this band… so many incredibly brilliant songs - and this is just pure growling pop-rock brilliance!
My favourite Undertones track
THAT RIFF!!! I cannot come up with a more powerful intro of any rock song ever than the first few bars of You Got My Number...tight, awesome, Derry mightiness.
Alternative Ulster?
when this came out I had to get the single the next day . I have still got it.
👏👏👏👏💯
I've been thinking about this. In my opinion, the only thing that comes close to the opening of this is 'Tommy Gun' by The Clash. That's pretty tight and punchy too.
Exactly - what an intro - the kind of thing that wants you to totally let rip!!
Love this. Real song. Thanks for posting
What a fucking brilliant pop song. Awesome guitar riffs and great catchy lyrics. No one today is doing this. If they are please let me know.
Check out Pipe Down Tony and the Chilly Dawn Starts & their song 'cutting candlewax'
Still going...best band ever..I'm booked for February this year in Derry 👍
What an experience watching these live, fergal was topless within one song and they were amazing live, the good days !!!!
I loved this song when it first came out and like "Teenage Kicks," it's regularly on one of my playlists.

I never get fed up of great songs like this! :O)
Also the lyrics are just on point
This and Wednesday Week we're their finest songs. Genius songwriting.
one of the best song ever!
Yeah Awesome used to blast this out in my car, takes me back. Sry Mr Peel RIP. Beats Teenage Kicks.
Loved Wednesday Week
Classic! Love the way the TOTP crowd always look slightly bemused when a decent band comes on!

A belter!
Happy Happy days. brilliant track.
One of the Undertones best.
got to be in the top3 I reckon.
Best band to ever come from Ireland, north and south of the border. Loved SLF but this the Undertones for me just had everything.
Much prefer SLF. Undertones were ok for pop punk but limited material. I do like this song though. and of course Teenage Kicks
@@OldWolflad I think at the end they really did try and move on and ended up in some horrible pop universe. Julie Ocean is best forgotten.
Our Fergal loved it
One of my new favourite bands in 2021!
Well done David
I'm old enough to remember watching this performance when it first aired and my GRANDMOTHER asking me what I thought about it! I think she was impressed.......
THE perfect 3 minute pop song!
The Undertones are Brilliant, love everything about this song :▪)
making this into a song would be sick its catchy
Right up there with Buzzcocks i believe or magazine shot by both sides or The Vapors Spiders
Yeah! Teach Me more about the Undertones. that sound makes me wanna jump up and down
I use this song title all the time .........
No kidding, Tim. This one had me hooked immediately when it came out and still does. Punk pop.
It's hard to push this tune away hey? Gets right inside you. Makes you smile and want to share it with others. Like ALL music should.
This was class when it came out still is.
Great name
Ace record. Saw The Undertones at St Georges Hall Bradford 3 star jumpers and parkas brilliant.
Thank you John Peel for giving them the break

Rather have feargal
North of Ireland’s finest.
🇮🇪
Fantastic. Not sure Micky is giving it as much as he could, though
Brilliant 😘👌
Marvellous tune!
K- I'm ALWAYS here for you. Smile, Sparkle Eyes... you're beautiful in my eyes forever and ever.
Another proof that punk can be aesthetic.
Capolavoro!!!
Excellent... 😉
Brilliant.
I think this was their best song and not teenage kicks
Agree!
Always thought that...
Teenage Kicks was a great intro. It would be sad if a bands first song was their best.
I'm inclined to agree.
i was always inclined to eat a mars bar
Yes Yes Yes, Now this really is how to party !!!!
As we all know the " True Punks " Were those who " Created There Own Image / Identity !!! And The Undertones and in " Particular Feargal Sharkey Were an " Obvious Example " Of that !! Better than u2 me thinks any 1 agree ?

😂
Saw them in 82 in Kilburn. Soaked by the end. Brilliant!!
🤣
Absolutely!
I consider this their best song along with My Perfect Cousin.
You might be right...I remember exactly where I was when I first saw them. Even as 9 year olds in the UK it was REALLY exciting when The Undertones appeared on TOTP.
@@squishmallowfan025 Yes it was great seeing Punk bands on TOTP. My favourite appearances were normally by the UK Subs, my parents used to hate them.
Beautiful
Pity about the front being chopped off.

Brilliant naive pop.
As a teenager in the 90s always though of ash as their natural inheritors
These guys could write irresistible music. Go on, try and resit this track, I dare you! :-)
Just for today 7/3/24 this is the most perfect 45 ever.
Who thinks the hives might have heard this when they were young😏
Top banana !
Is FS trying to do the Wilco stare? xd
I play bass the same way, not at all.
Cool as fuck.
Isn't that lead singer the same guy that played on cheers?
@danhendrickson7708
No, that was Roger Rees. Same hairstyle though.
Anthems for the Samaritans
That's where the Hives took... everything.
0 11 I always wonder who he waved to?
A great song in the same pop-punk genre as The Buzzcocks but look at the crowd...completely unable to join in the fun. I guess they didn't get it, must have been like performing in front of a flock of dead sheep.
Lone Wolf they'd probably all been sexually assaulted
Lone Wolf, Typical TOTP audience, 90%of them probably weren't really interested in music, it was all about being seen on the telly, totally wooden.
Punchy and exciting. Always preferred it to the overrated Teenage Kicks.
It's like the Monkees met the Ramones
The original Pop Punk ha ha
Feargal Sharkey is the one of the best front men of all time !! he`s up there with Mick Jagger and Tom Meighan
there's no cool drugs anymore. #speed
There never were.
Jays us this is almost as good as Teenage Kicks.........
is that fergal sharkey?
Michael Seymour yeH this is his first band
Вокалиста жестко корячит,😾 junkies
