Will Our 1934 Ford "Beautiful" Run Off It's "New" Gas Tank??

- It's finally time for our 1934 Ford 5 Window "Beautiful" to ditch the nurse tank and (hopefully) run on it's own gas tank. The gas tank currently in the car appears to have been left sitting partially full of fuel which has turned the gas tank into scrap. We could probably tumble the tank and clean it out, but we purchased 4 lightly used gas tanks with all the cars in Michigan. This saves us a lot of time and hassle. Since Matt has one 34 gas tank replacement under his belt with the Skelly 34, he makes quick work of pulling the old tank and sticking in the replacement. The fuel system in the engine bay also sat with fuel in it, so the glass sediment bowl is filled horrible smelling brown fuel. After some replacement hoses and an inline filter its time to see if she will start!!1

I'm glad somebody finally tried my idea about pressure washing the inside of the gas tank. Thank you!
Hey Matt
Was good to see Beautyful running with gas from her own tank.
Was also fun to hear that very distinctive starter sound.
I grew up working on old cars and learning the sound of the properly functioning starters.
Thank you for keeping these vintage automobile sounds alive.
Work safe, Be well
What a kick-ass video! I just love it when you do this kind of show! Thanks Matt!
I came here to write exactly this.
Thank you!
i'm amazed beautiful ran at all with all that garbage in her system!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!! I ALWAYS LEARN SO MUCH FROM YOUR CHANNEL!!!!! GREAT PROGRESS ON THE 34 FORD.
Great success with the tank and fuel lines.
That has got to be the hardest gas tank removal I have ever seen.!
Winter is almost here and the sweetheart roadster wants me to remind you...its her turn.
Yep we do intensive metal work in the winters.
Really nice work Beautiful sounds great as a guy who plays with vintage motorcycles it is a great feeling when you get something to run after it has set a couple decades. Great content.
i let fuel tanks dry out then put a shop vac on the filler neck / filler hole and at the same time blow compressed air in the drain hole (or fuel valve hole on a motorcycle) to clear dirt out. You can hear the rust bounce around while getting sucked out eventually you don’t hear any rust bouncing around in the tank. its good to do on used tanks that have been sitting you wouldn’t want a mouse nest hidden in it.
Nice job Matt.
Sounds like the engine runs well. The more it gets ran and driven, Beautiful will only get better!
Wonerful, wunerful. You are living the dream.
MORE KATE !
After doing the Sceli you new what was going on with the tank removal!!!!! Thanks for sharing this old gold content with us looking forward to seeing the drive through town!!!!!!
Back in the olden days we could just drop off a rusty fuel tank at a radiator shop. Every town had one or more. They would just toss it in their giant hot tank. Then in just a few hours... bingo you got back a totally clean tank. 15 or 20 bucks saved you a lot of grief cleaning a fuel tank. Things were just better back in the day.
I bet one in this shape would leak after that
So happy for you!
She sure is "Beautiful"!
Now I fully understand why guys would bob the rear fenders and throw the fuel tank in the trunk😂
Hot rodder in the 50s “Well Skippy I don’t want to do that again”
Sweet! Nice to see such a stock set up and how to work on it.
Love that sound, click clack , I got a flathead!😁
Just opened a October fest beer and now I'm loking forward to another great ITG episode. 👌
Love them old brings back memories of when I helped my dad on his old car.
Good work Matt. To bad Brandon wants to get us out of our cars and riding the trains instead.
Thoroughly enjoy what you are doing. I lived my first car years back then. May I suggest you reduce the repetition and yacking and use the time for doing.
Others like the “yacking” and yell when we just time lapse through stuff. More viewers than just you.
Morning Matt, looks like Beautiful is coming together...be safe, God Bless!!!
I was thinking about old tanks the other day as my neighbor got a plumber in to clean a drain. What you need is someone with a drain cleaning jet. You'd get 100% clean and then they could use the drain cam to see if it's useable or too rusty. 😁
shake and break's are one of the best tools
Gas tanks are a big pain.
but I'm glad you found a short cut.
JUST PICKED A 29 PLYMOUTH COUPE LOOKING 2 DOORS DONT NEED TO BE PERFECT CAR IS KINDA RATTY
THANKS FOR THE INSPIRATION
The gas tank bolts were wired in place.
You guys can get that glass gass bole clean with lacquer thiner!
Getting closer!!!
Yeah, I didn't think pressure washing the tank was the way to go. When I do things like that it just prolongs the pain until I replace the tank.
Great video! Question: Could you have cleaned the fuel line by running laquer thinner from a container to a dump bottle by the carb and let all the varnish and other crud go there? I've used laquer thinner for years to clean grease and crud off of engine and motor parts. I have to be careful because it does have a low flash point but it works really well.
Certainly could have
@@IronTrapGarage Could have used a can of carb cleaner with the straw that comes with them too. Sprayed from both ends and blown the line out back and forth. a few times until you don't see any gunk coming out.
Matt, what is the possibility of making a phosphoric acid solution for miss beautiful's original tank, and let it sit a few weeks, to see if if that tank is salvageable? If it hasn't got too thin, may be an idea! Great work on saving these old vehicles. I love your videos.
Good idea, I have also been playing around a lot with reverse electrolysis to remove rust, it works amazingly well and gets into all the hard to reach places. All you need is sodium carbonate (washing soda) a piece of steel to work as a sacrificial anode and a power supply. Would be perfect for a rusty fuel tank. Cheers
Awesome! Amazed if started at all !!
Wandering did you spray any Eastwood rust inhibitor back in the hidden panels?
Thanks Matt, keep up the great work bro 😎
Kinda' breathtaking when one realizes the last person to put the previous tank in .. has likely been dead, 50 years plus or minus.
Great video
Closed Caption - " Hey, Matt, Airdrop Garage". Lol
I was just wondering, was the little old lady from Pasadena?
Now I know where Ford came up with the rear-mount (crash explosion prone) fuel tank design that they re-used for the 70's pinto!
All cars had their tanks in that location.
them 34 ford gas tank are big pain in tank 32 are that bad too
Hello from Brazil
Sounds GREAT 👍.
#STAYSAFE
#PHILLYPHILLY 🇺🇸
Nice work, ticking the boxes, towards a driveable car.
man, good job
why did you not sandblast the tank and all the parts and paint before you put it back
Does the pickup in the tank have a screen or a filter in there? Or is it just a pipe going toward the bottom?
Just a pipe
@@IronTrapGarage Thx...Just curious,,
i to feel safer with a filter attached to my fuel line
Sending A solvent oil type lube to coat the system..TRY IT...?
👍👍
so Matt looks like your Beautiful is starting you new Beautiful huh lol
SHE IS BEAUTIFUL
interesting vid, with you guys talking as you go...then you ruin it with repetitive boring music. It's unnecessary and I much prefer listening to what you have to say
A guy before you complained we talked too much and wants it just the work. Can’t please everyone.
@@IronTrapGarage good point
That little car is truly amazing, I've worked on 5 year old stuff and newer that every nut, bolt and fixing is seized solid
I am so glad to see this car coming back to life.
Man, that Eastwood screw buster sure has paid for itself in time!!! I might have to add that to my tool box! Had to suppress a gag looking at that filter bowl - old gas is not only stinky, but it is sticky - the smell seems to follow you around all day! Nice work, and looking forward to Beautiful's debut on the town roads! I'm 50 shades of green! (jealousy, not gas-sick! 😉)
Matt must have been awesome 😎 to take an untouched car apart and seeing it in the factory condition!!!!! Must have been a great experience!!!!!!
I love that you honored the little old lady by keeping the name she gave the car!
Another job well done! One step closer! Your patience is amazing!
I got to get one of them Eastwood taker outer thingys!!
Look exactly like the inside of the gas tank on my welder when I first got it. Good work guys 👍
The original owner would be pleased with how you are treating "Beautiful".
Would there have been any way to purge / blow the line cleaner?
Looks like another winner!👍🏼
Try REVERSE FLUSH..pumping fresh gas back.TO TANK..!..THEN DRAIN ETC ETC...
It's great to watch you bring cars back to life Matt, you're a great inspiration! You've probably been asked this before, but, do you have problems running gas with ethanol in these classics? Or only run ethanol free gas in them?
was wondering if you have pulled the pump push rod and measured it for ware they do tend to ware down over many years limiting the amount of travel of the pump arm and so the amount of gas delivered ,way too many fuel pumps have been tossed because of worn pump rods.love your show my first car was a 48 ford super deluxe cabriolet, i love flat heads they get into your blood
I removed the plastic fuel filter the previous owner put on my flathead and put on a metal one, I know you can’t see in them but I believe they are safer.
If it were me I'd put a kit in that fuel pump as those old diaphragms don't last long in modern fuels.
Matt did you put that back seal on? Excellent show BTY:)
i use my portable sand blaster and blow through the lines ..it works great
Great share, keep an eye on the oil that old gas pump diaphragm may go south and let gas leak into the engine.
I am sure I heard all eight of those cylinders sounds good 👍
wonderful video! 👍👍😎😎
nice overhaul.
Nice. Bruno from France.
always enjoy your show
Never hurts to try !
Great Video...
Some get a bunch of hardware inside and shake it by tying it to a turning machine to clean it inside. Then maybe line it with something like POR-15 gas tank liner?
Drive it more regularly and fill it up with fresh fuel all the time. It should flush out little by little.
Cement mixer + tumbling media + motorcycle tire + ratchet strap straps = less effort!
Matt, you should try "evaporust" in the tank. I have a 47 Crosley that sat for 20+ years in a museum & it had an inch of rust/funk on the bottom. I poured this stuff in & left it over night, then drained it. The bottom of the tank looked like new metal after that. I then strained the evaporust & added it back to the tank & rolled it on one side, then left it over night again. The continued this process for all four sides. The tank works great now. This stuff can be re-used many times. I bought it at an auto parts store, however I've seen it at Lowes as well. I typically don't have much faith in "goop" type solutions, but I'm a believer now : )
Great Job...always good seeing Kate help out now and then...at least she didn't loose a fingernail this time.....keep on keeping on
I love my 34. Keep up the good work Matt ! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
What happened to the lift?
What lift? Nothing has changed.
keep the great work I did gas tank in 1934 ford victoria once
😂 Must be a relief to be able to remove some of that mousey goodness!
Good work guys.
Keep on keeping on….
wow flat head engine
so quite
it my first time hear flat head running.
Matt great video! Thanks for sharing. Kevin
Why didn’t you address the rear valance while it was off 🧐🤪
