Great and simple , appreciate the review Steve, I know dealer here in metro Detroit that started carrying KEF, I've had a chance to hear the KC 62 , I actually took it out of the box for him and hooked it up I was highly impressed, stayed there most the afternoon listening to music switching between the LS 50s , R series KEF ( out of my budget lol) and KEF Q350s all with that sub I enjoyed it. So awesome review man always enjoy your spin on products 👍🏾👍🏾💯💯
I love small subs for music. I use a pair of 5.25” sub running stereo. It literally can go down to 35hz but without being boomy, more of a “musical” bass that integrates well with music. I’m more into near/midfield listening.
I have just purchased a KEF KC62 to use with my ATC SCM40 speakers and the difference is stunning! As Steve says, it just just vanishes and integrates perfectly and Bass Extension is absolutely astounding! To add to the above. I have just purchased a second KEF KC62 and am now fronting my ATC SCM40s with a pair of these beauties! Can I say WOW! The extension is fantastic, have got the cut off set at 50hz which is just right for the ATCs.
@@sukruyildizel422 I've got a pair of LS50WIIs and love love love them. Tempted to get the KC62, but not convinced I need it. The LS50s sounds very clear, sharp, and clean to my ears. Quality of sound over quantity for me.
100% nailed on Steve. I was a small room sceptic and then bought a KC62 (before I even saw this) and wow does it open my stand mounts up. I guess it takes all the heavy lifting away from the mid range drivers because they just sings with it in place. It ain't just about the thump. That said, I wouldn't have bought it if it meant constant fidget to get the sweet spot. DSP / Room correction or in my case Lygndorf TDAI means I can control and change all the variables from the listening position in real time. God, what an age we live in.
I love the way you are able to put audio concepts into words... like trying to describe the presence of the subwoofer as adding a "textural" element to the sound. That works for me!
My REL Stadium 2 Sub with speaker level inputs is still to this day the absolute finest sounding Sub that was designed for music reproduction by REL. No sub has ever come anywhere near it for pure sound quality and it's 20 years old! A beautiful real wood behemoth of a piece of furnature.
I noticed Stereophile removed the Blade 2s from the Class A reccomended speakers. It's as if they want to give KEF that kick in the butt to deliver this new tech!
Bought a pair, absolutely satisfied amazing subs! It seems that KEF is a fan of BW's PV1. Their mantra seems to have been how can we make these even smaller and maintain or improve its qualities? Well they met their goal in spades. The KC62 is as clean, as loud and goes as low if not lower than the PV1 in a form factor about 40% smaller, unbelievable. Fabulous! BTW for best results for music music in particular you would be well advised to use 2.
I purchased one last week and was so blown away as to how such a big beautiful sound can come from something so small that today, I received a second one and that really made the difference! We know that sub bass is omnidirectional but stereo subs is the true way to go, An audiophile friend visited this afternoon and he was blown away by an organ CD that I played him. You could FEEL some of the bottom register of the big pipes!

I think you missed a trick with the RCAs, the high pass filter. Connecting the line outs onwards to the stereo speakers allows the subwoofer to filter out the low frequencies those speakers may not be able to do properly. I'm considering this subwoofer for that feature (and yes, to go with my LS50s). Source -> Preamp -> KC62 -> Poweramp -> LS50s

Maybe his preamp can do crossover on the outputs? Also, he set the sub crossover really low at 50 Hz, so even if the LRs are not high passed it will work out fone with small speakers.
As a dealer the KEF subs are far and above its competitors; They are a Tier 1 manufacturer and build everything in their own factories, the DSP they employ is outstanding! Comparisons to others are not what this review is about.

Very nice review Steve. May I add? As you know, I am the Martin Logan guy, and even thought the bass modules go down to 25Hz. I was wanting a subwoofer for the deep pedal notes on pipe organ recordings AND the orchestral bass drum without having to turn up the bass control on the Parasound P6 - 2.1.. So, back to my BRICK AND MORTAR store for the Martin Logan 1600X. This has complete control from phone or tablet, along with room correction by Anthem. I'm going to soon be in the market for a new sub, this one seems to hit all the hot buttons for me: size and blending. I live in a high rise condo and run a pair of Ohm 2000 Talls. A unit that takes up less real estate in the living room is exactly what I want/need. With any luck they will match well.
The obvious comparison is the B&W PV1D...the "bowling ball sub". Similar in most repects, also pricey and feature packed. How do they stack up against one another? Inquiring minds want to know!
My credibility detector kicked in at the mention of "stereo" subs. At least the 80 Hz parameter was mentioned. I use two matching subs (because I have them - bandpass enclosure type - and two sub outputs from my receiver), because they excite the room modes in different, complementary ways.
Sean mentioned that you hog first dibs for these reviews. 🤣Now that you are done, looking forward to hear opinions from Sean, Ron and Thomas. 👍 Thanks for this review. But like others commented, need a little more details.
Thanks Steve. How they combined both drivers into a single motor system with overlapping, concentrically arranged voice coils is very innovative IMO, though barely mentioned...Obviously not a big deal to Steve, 😆 I think it’s really cool! I haven’t had the pleasure of being exposed to all the tech Steve has reviewed.
I almost bought this to match with my LS50 Metas, but went with SVS' compact sub, the 3000 Micro, instead. I've owned several SVS subs and never have been disappointed. The 3000 Micro has Bluetooth and cost about $700 less than the overpriced KC62.
How are you finding the SVS 3000 Micro with the LS50s? I'm also considering this sub, a pair of them, or a single SB 3000 to go with my LS50W I instead of a single KC62 (almost double the cost of the Micro as you pointed out.)
@@parkermackenzie9848 I love my Micro and LS50 setup. I use them for my computer audio system - games, music, videos. The Micro is surprisingly punchy and powerful for its small size. The SB 3000 is in a class by itself compared to the Micro, though. I doubt even 2 Micros could compete with it.
Thank you VM for recommending Mr.Robot (vol 3) :) to use with subwoofers. This music was ideal for tuning my homebrew a/d/s 7" powered sub with a pair of a/d/s L300Cs hooked up to an Olasonic Nano-UA1 Integrated amp. Your advice to not have the SW standout wrt the speakers it's supporting was quite excellent.
" easily the best compac sub I´ve heard" Well, I can agree with you on the sound quality, BUT the real problem with the KC62 is that it turns off at low volumes. It's a very annoying problem. We don't always feel like listening at very high volumes and, on the other hand, in certain situations we can't. Many people complain about this problem, but KEF doesn't seem to be able to solve this serious problem. I have already sent the KC62 self to my seller, who has already contacted KEF, but so far, after more than 2 months nothing. I connected KC62 with my LS50W II, in manual or LFE mode, but the problem persists, What should be a good set is compromised by the KC62 problem. Unacceptable.
@@parkermackenzie9848 I have the KC62 paired with the LS50 W1 and there is no issue whatsoever with the problem of low volume that had been reported earlier on. KEF has found a fix for the issue. I received mine in September and have never encountered the problem of the sub having trouble waking up.
That speaker level block is a real pain alright. Bare 16 gauge wire just barely fits in so forget about thicker cables. What I did was to use angled speaker pins to make it easier.
Hey Steve, would this be worth a try with maggies? I know u don’t like subs with magnepan but they managed blending cone speakers with their 30.7 for condos, right? I guess those were open baffle.
Earbuds for Kef M400 250 euros for a pair of earbuds in replacement, for headphones bought new 50 euros (original price of the headphone 250 euros, or the price of this spare part), while the leatherette is very thin and quickly detaches itself? I expected about ten euros, which I usually put in the competing models. 25 euros would have seemed very expensive, too expensive considering the poor quality, but 250 euros (240 Pounds) is unfortunately not a joke, but an incredible bullshit and a deliberate merchant choice that corresponds to wear and tear. I have always been faithful to the Kef brand for 40 years, but I understand that we are actually taken for pigeons, frankly it is like urinating on us. Fortunately Kef is not a car manufacturer, he would sell the 4 tires at the same price as the new car! Also, we notice that the construction of these earpieces does not correspond to what they seem to be, that is to say a natural rubber of good thickness to withstand time. In short, a good sound quality, but of the whole issue manufacturing, and a sales policy that is obvious robbery.
Steve. No reference to their claim of 11hz output?? Something tells me you ignored that on purpose. It sticks out like a sore thumb on a spec sheet. I'm sure many want to know if it is usable output down to 11hz....or even 20 hz. Your organ music was the best way to tell.
Hey @Steve_Guttenberg_Audiophiliac how do you feel about using a high-pass filter with subs? So instead of crossing the sub where the bookshelf naturally rolls off, what about introducing a high pass to completely cut those low-tones from the small bookshelves and have the sub handle everything under say 80hz. I've heard this can negatively effect voicing of the bookshelf, do you have an opinion here?
I think if you complain more about the price than anything else you are in the wrong hobby. You buy two of something expect to pay double. Crazy concept right? Me personally KEF is overrated I’d never own anything they make (not my cup of tea).
Steve these blocks are one of the best ways to get a solid connection, but you gotta be proficient in making your own cables. They called phoenix terminals
Hi Steve, can you flesh out your comments a little on the sub setting in regards to when used with the LS50? You mentioned 50 or 60 Hz was what you were going between, and funny enough I find myself stuck between these exact two cut off points. I’m going a little crazy as I keep changing it back and forth. I hear it but don’t know which one? If you are able, please explain what is making me jump up back and forth, and if there’s one more “optimal setting” than the other between these two? I’m using my LS50s with the Kef Reference R400b sub. Please help. Thank you.
I’d like to help, but please understand there is no clear-cut answer to this question. So many factors are in play: the size of your room, the distance of the subwoofer to the wall or corner. The distance between the speakers and the subwoofer
Great shirt on Steve. The underlying graphics reminds me of Peter Max. This is not a cheap subwoofer @ $1500. Not sure if the Rel T7i is the rough equivalent but it’s $500 cheaper. Aesthetically though the KEF has my vote.
It’s about time. I went and listened to the LS50’s a few years ago and liked the mid range and higher frequency alot however they are a smalI speaker I couldn’t help noticing alot of the low end was missing. I listened to alot of speakers, B&W, Totem, Elac and a few Klipsch (I couldn’t afford the Cornwalls at the time) and ended up getting Focal studio monitors. If at the time Kef had this subwoofer I would of definitely had purchased it and the LS50’s.
Adding a REL Q400 2 years ago (specified at 30 Kg net nude! really, a two man lift (or you can walk it on it's corners ..as one does) & gr8 con' so a very successful (for a change!) eBay buy at a 1/3'ish £350 vs £1000 when new but at least 15 or maybe up to 20? years old now, working fine but I guess subs are probably much better now for a much lower price. It's ran from Amp's speaker posts as Rel recommends in user manual. At once when it was properly dialed in, phased & neccessarily placed to rear & side of my right speaker, nearly fully in a corner but pulled out 4 to 6 inches i.e. as much as I dare without getting nagged (no other practicle choice, & I'm told corner placement is the worst place for a sub). But what really surprised me most was getting a sense of the concert hall size in orchestral & smaller chamber orchestra from vinyl recordings as always... (my CD's are kept in the car now, once in a while I'll fancy hearing one & fetch it in) ...esp' on recordings done in the larger concert halls. Even cellos of quartets recorded wherever came more alive with their woody low resonance giving them more "body" & a physical like presence. And my Tannoy 15" M.Golds are not particular bass shy but surely lack something below my aprox 55 - 60Hz setting point. With rock & pop ...yeah, ok & sometimes 'meh' but I'm enjoying classical music & unplugged bands, accoustic stuff like never before the sub's addition. I could just fit 2 of these small KEF subs next to & a bit back from each speaker. That's not going to happen fast less I win the lottery I never do🤪
Hey Steve, I’ve been watching your channel for years buy you opened my eyes today by saying you listen to Aphex Twin. I’m pleased about that as I now know you don’t just test with classical or jazz 😂. Anyhow, have you tried funki porcini ?
Really enjoy your reviews. So i am interested in this sub for my Graham LS6. You mention it is seamless implementation. But may i ask how well this sub specifically went with the LS6 ?
@Steve, any idea on how the sound quality compared to SVS / REL Sub's ? was it able to hit less than 20 Hz ... ? How was it compared to a normal subwoofer? like 12" or 15"
You need to select the LFE mode, place the sub connect the Cable and then you can control the sub via the App. thats at least how KEF planned the thing. I will add the KC63 to my Wireless I
Steve's FIRST to review this much anticipated sub! No mention of how it/they work with Magnepan LRS? Rumour is it's a "fast" sub? A full 2.2 KEF LS50 speaker system now carries a $4500 price tag:-/ IDK....size isn't everything. Even if it's 11hz out of a 1000w basketball! Makes RELs look affordable though;-)
11hz that’s freaking crazy what db is that at ? I’ve seen a lot of reviews on this sub and one said this is only a musical sub that for movies and home theater it just didn’t have it . That it distorted at higher volumes with heavy bass props to kef though game changer
Cool little subs! I'd be tempted if I didn't already have a pair of JL Audio e110s, in stereo of course. Thin Red Line is definitely a demo disc. Try Kraftwerk Minimum/Maximum for some floor shaking jollies.
Hey Steve, what is your take on the HEDD headphones? Have you heard them and what did you think. How about trying a Merrill-Williams REAL 104.2 turntable?
Steve, how does this rave fit in with what you've said about small drivers with big excursion not really being able to match big drivers? Is that irrelevant because this is powered? I was waiting for a caveat comparing this to other subs with much bigger drivers. I'm already thinking about replacing my JL e112 to have something this small. Thanks!
A sub might sound ''right'' with ambient, soundtrack or sweeping classical music. The true test is with music that has a fast paced rhythm/beat. That's where I could never get my REL T-Zero sub to disappear and why I ended up selling it out of frustration. At the beginning of this review I got excited and was already contemplating getting one until I noticed what your demo tracks were.

Aphex Twin SAW II is one of my favorite albums of all time.
very innovative design, with the concentric voice coils. very cool
A tiny collection of headphones :-)
Thanx for review!
At what volume does the KC62 engage in the KEF Connect App? I'm curious as I'm looking at this sub for the LS50W I.
@@parkermackenzie9848 I have the KC62 paired with the LS50 W1 and there is no issue whatsoever with the problem of low volume that had been reported earlier on. KEF has found a fix for the issue. I received mine in September and have never encountered the problem of the sub having trouble waking up.
A great musical sub improves a system dramatically. I own REL`s t series and they are very good, but may get one of these KEF`s.
That speaker level block is a real pain alright. Bare 16 gauge wire just barely fits in so forget about thicker cables. What I did was to use angled speaker pins to make it easier.
If matched with LS50 wireless, all the crossover settings (and also a high-pass filter for the mains) and gain can be controlled from the KEF app
Thanks Steve. Loved the review. Completely made me laugh discussing the connection options. Definitely agree.
No surprise, love that shirt Steve. Made chuckle just to look at all those guitars.
Keith! Love that you're around here. Need a rundown of your fww hifi setup
Nice report, Sir. Thank you for the video.
Have you tried it with Maggies yet?
Best shirt EVER!
Great music examples (Aphex, Thin red line)! Makes me understand it well.
Lovely video and awesome shirt!
Would have been nice to see actual pictures of the sub in Steve’s listen room...connections etc. Not just KEF marketing photos. Kinda odd. 🤔
This was more like a commercial, not a review. A disappointing fluff piece imo
Because Steve’s like the Colonel he’s not giving away all his secret Herbs n spices
Man is this guy obsessed with KEF LS50's
Don't lie Steve, you're all about that electronic music and I love it!
They should sell these as a pair. They're small enough.
At 1200 a pair for the REL T5i, I don't see KEF selling these at 3000 a pair.
@@JohnDoe-np3zk
Indeed ☺️
Yeah, they should sell them as a pair for $1500.
I think if you complain more about the price than anything else you are in the wrong hobby. You buy two of something expect to pay double. Crazy concept right? Me personally KEF is overrated I’d never own anything they make (not my cup of tea).
@@JohnDoe-np3zk people are buying games consoles for twice the price, and they're only getting one.
Love the shirt and I love my KRIX sub woofer for movies and music.. yep I love the floor and wall rumble in movies
Steve these blocks are one of the best ways to get a solid connection, but you gotta be proficient in making your own cables. They called phoenix terminals
Thanks Steve. For that price would hope so. I will look for your input on Dayton Monoprice Hsu 500 or below
Will you ever be reviewing the KF92? 👀
Did you try it with your Cornwall’s, just to see what happens?
nothing lol
Wondering the same thing! Wondering if this could keep up with a pair of la scalas
I wonder how to optimize it with my LSX IIs on my desk, Steve?
Of course I must have it:) even though I have two other subs
Diggin' that new shirt!
The sub sounds like a winner, too.
Please compare/contrast to the REL T7i
Great shirt on Steve.
That's not going to happen fast less I win the lottery I never do🤪
For that very very brief split second, I thought Steve was telling us he played Wham!
Phew. Scary.
Me too! : 8-O
Hey Steve, I’ve been watching your channel for years buy you opened my eyes today by saying you listen to Aphex Twin. I’m pleased about that as I now know you don’t just test with classical or jazz 😂. Anyhow, have you tried funki porcini ?
I love subs ... for music and HT but the use is a bit different. So I got 4 fast REL subs for music and 1 large/ported SVS sub for movies. Bliss!
How does the KC62 compare with the REl T-zero; my money would be on the latter?
Really enjoy your reviews. So i am interested in this sub for my Graham LS6. You mention it is seamless implementation.
But may i ask how well this sub specifically went with the LS6 ?
@Steve, any idea on how the sound quality compared to SVS / REL Sub's ? was it able to hit less than 20 Hz ... ? How was it compared to a normal subwoofer? like 12" or 15"
it has less output than a huge sub. better?
I wonder how KC62 will connect to LS50 Wireless?
You need to select the LFE mode, place the sub connect the Cable and then you can control the sub via the App. thats at least how KEF planned the thing. I will add the KC63 to my Wireless I
I run a different sub on my W2’s. Both primary and secondary speaker have LFE channel. I don’t believe you can do dual stereo but you can do dual sub.
Love the guitar shirt!
Steve's FIRST to review this much anticipated sub!
No mention of how it/they work with Magnepan LRS? Rumour is it's a "fast" sub?
A full 2.2 KEF LS50 speaker system now carries a $4500 price tag:-/
IDK....size isn't everything. Even if it's 11hz out of a 1000w basketball!
Makes RELs look affordable though;-)
WAF comes at a cost.
Jay reviewed this a couple days ago, or at least talked about it on his show.
@@Hare_deLune
Talk is cheap.
Speaking of which his microphone technique was abysmal 🤣
@@jimkyle571
My wife doesn't complain about the two systems with four subs (anymore). Once you hear the result you make the real estate sacrifice :-)
Thanks Steve. Hmm, I'm tempted. One of these or two RELs - if you had to choose which way would you go?
"less sub-woofing..." Brilliant.
11hz that’s freaking crazy what db is that at ? I’ve seen a lot of reviews on this sub and one said this is only a musical sub that for movies and home theater it just didn’t have it . That it distorted at higher volumes with heavy bass props to kef though game changer
I hope the fact that review models are going out means this sub will make it to consumers soon.
My local shop is getting several next week... so yeah soon
@@lpeterson4550 How about LS50WIIs in white? I’ve got a set of those on order, too.
Love the term "sub woofing".
Did you test with a system that utilizes bass management or were the main's supplied a full range signal with the sub complimenting?
Does this woofer pair well with KEF Q550 towers?
Steve, how does this rave fit in with what you've said about small drivers with big excursion not really being able to match big drivers? Is that irrelevant because this is powered? I was waiting for a caveat comparing this to other subs with much bigger drivers. I'm already thinking about replacing my JL e112 to have something this small. Thanks!
It's like that scene in Zoolander where he has the smallest phone.
What a coincidence, I am using JL e112 also. And just very curious how this sub perform, especially for movie
I would have thought Steve it'd be best against the wall between the two speakers getting some base reinforcement there as well
A sub might sound ''right'' with ambient, soundtrack or sweeping classical music. The true test is with music that has a fast paced rhythm/beat. That's where I could never get my REL T-Zero sub to disappear and why I ended up selling it out of frustration. At the beginning of this review I got excited and was already contemplating getting one until I noticed what your demo tracks were.
I have this issue with all my “modern” setup, not only with subs. While, classic, jazz, acoustic, sounds excellent.
Could I use this with my Maggies? SMGc
