    This actually helped me. Before watching this, I was exactly as you described; "strictly the flute, and the flute only". I'm a senior in high school now planning on majoring in music with the flute and I'm happy to have come across this before I left and become consumed by music in college.

      I am SO glad this helped. I really wish someone had told me this before I got into music school too... Would have saved a LOT of headache :)

    This really struck me!! I did an MFA in poetry, but I was really young. I didn't have a lot of life experience to explore through writing. The MFA experience was intense, and while I did earn my degree, I was left completely burned out. I have resisted writing since then because I am afraid that I can't do it anymore. Your video reminded me of what I would lose if I never wrote again.

      what do you visualise when you play the flute? does it take you to a happy place?

    • @JustAnotherFlutist
      @JustAnotherFlutist  8 лет назад +4

      You know, actually it doesn't always take me to my happy place. I visualize a lot of things, and it really depends on the music I'm playing. Music can span all different emotions, so I tend to relive emotions I have experienced before. :)

      Well, when region tryouts happened, me and my friend Theresa whet to the TOP BAND after school practices. It was a really cool moment and i felt like a was in the 1st band instead of the 2nd. I made region auditions (So i could go to the contest) i sadly didn't make the actual region, but it was an amazing experience.

    OMG I had this extreme bonding moment with you in this video. I think I feel exactly like you do. We are both flutists (though I am not a professional) but it is not our personality. Beeing a flutist, beeing a visual artist, beeing a writer or dancer, these are DECISIONS we make in life, but we couldn´t just not do anything creative, anything to express ourselves emotionally because we ARE artists. We seek beauty and we seek ways to show others beauty because that is what and who we are.

    Very interesting to hear this.
    I feel kind of the same way you used to:
    "I am the bassoon; the bassoon in me"
    I have a piece of paper above my bed to remind me in my waking moments, as well as the last moments of the day, saying this:
    "You are nobody without the bassoon"

    Love this! Most people that know me think of 2 very different aspects of myself. They think of the accountant that is serious and very good or they think of the reader/healer that is here to help. But there is so much more to me. I have incorporated my love of many things into my music and my love of music into other areas.
    For example. All the knitting patterns I create can be seen as some form of musical counting. I do this because when I am knitting I will sing a tune to myself so help me keep track of where I am at without having to concentrate on counting as much. I listen to music when I work on clients accounting stuff so I can concentrate harder on what they need me to do without getting bored.
    It took me a very long time to find myself but once I did I was able to see how everything fits together and makes me a more interesting (at least in my mind) person.

    I agree with the comments in the video. My experience is from the opposite perspective. I started to play the flute in 5th grade and played until I was 24. Then I didn't play for 40+ years. I was busy with family and work, and most of my recreational time and resources went into my primary hobby, sailing. A couple years ago, I had my flute refurbished and started to play again. Last September, I started taking lessons again. So, the flute was the neglected interest, but all that time "flute player" was on that secret internal self-definition that we all have. I'm very glad to have picked it up again. It's great to validate that part of my inner self.
    By coincidence, my son, who will soon turn 40, made a comment on FB this week. He said there are lot of people his age who are participating in hobbies who are not as good at it as they would have been if they had done it continuously. The 20s are a difficult decade to keep up with a hobby. Ask any new mom!

    I'm not a music major (I'm studying conservation biology), but I still practice almost every day. I quit band going into my first year of high school because we were afraid of the time commitment, and then pretty much stopped playing altogether. The next year, I became friends with someone in band and she encouraged me to join my junior year- better late than never! I appreciate making music soo much more after that. Now that I'm in college I'm a member of the flute choir and in the spring I'll be playing in the ensemble that's open to all students. I'm glad I listened to that gut feeling that something was "off" in high school, because I can't imagine not doing something that I love now, even if it's not my career. Many thanks to my friend back then, and to your videos for inspiring me to keep playing!

      That's awesome!! I'm so glad you paid attention to yourself! It's really easy to neglect a part of you that you might not think contributes to your main craft, but it's still a part of you, and you can't neglect yourself. Stay awesome! :D

    Growing up a lot of people told me that I can't be a dancer and a violinist. That my dancing was taking away from violin and that was why I wasn't that great. When I started music school it really got to me and I tried very hard to quit dance. It caused problems with my family because many of them are dancers, and not musicians, and it felt like they weren't supportive of my music every time they tried to convince me to come to a dance competition. Now I'm in 4th year and I know that my dancing may have caused scheduling conflicts with some music opportunities, but never made me any worse of a violinist. I think that's why I joined Dr. Bob's laptop orchestra. Its the first time I've gotten to work with dancers and musicians so harmoniously, and without feeling guilty or angry towards dance.

    • @JustAnotherFlutist
      @JustAnotherFlutist  8 лет назад +2

      HOLY CRAP you're part of Dr. Bob's laptop orchestra!!! That's awesome!! And yes, I totally agree, dancers and musicians should be able to work harmoniously together in the first place. We're all artists :)

    • @HighlandViolinist
      @HighlandViolinist 8 лет назад +1

      JustAnotherFlutist Yep, and it's been awesome! But I only got to dance for one composition for laptop orchestra so far. We have a bunch of dancers already this year. I was inside the sound booth with a mic so that the processed sounds from my feet, and not the natural sounds, would be the only ones heard. Dr. Bob said dancing in the sound booth doesn't count though and I think he wants me to be like an atonal Lindsey Stirling or something lol

    I think I am in this world also, finding myself without music. I am currently studying as a Music major majoring in Classical Singing Performance. When I am not practising, I am doing translation work or diction work, when I am not doing that, I am on youtube watching classical music (many about operas and art songs), or I find videos about technique and body posture. Before sleeping, I think of my repertoire, and when I wake up, I would always think, is my voice going to be alright? I think I am so caught up with music waaaayyyy toooo mucccchhh....haha...now thinking myself without my instrument (which is rather tough cause....I am the instrument lol), its hard to know who I am in terms of identity. I think I should open my mind to more things to find myself as a person, and not as a musician-to-be. Thank you for this video! Its like a wake up call for me to learn to search about myself! :)

    My first thought when I saw the title was "Who else would she be...Julia Roberts?" lol
    I learned the hard way not to compare myself to other people...because I am not them. I don't live their lives, I don't have their situations, I don't have their income, etc. Concentrating on myself has made me a better flute player and better graphic artist (what I'm currently studying).

    This is awesome! When I was 16, I failed a standardized test and because of that test, I spent a year and a half without being registered for an ensemble and I was depressed. One of the things that I do during my free time is watch Disney Movies. Also, I was first introduced to the flute when I was 10 and that was because my dad played but even before that, out of all the instruments in the orchestra, the flute was the one that compelled me the most :)

    Wooooow Jo!!! I really love when the vloggers get real!!! I don't know why... I feel like I connect with people even more so... Obviously because you're talking about your personal matters!!! I just recently finished a peer employment training, which prepared me to work with people in my county that have mental/behavioral health issues. As a peer specialist, these are the exact real things we talk about. The parts that you cannot neglect. Even as a peer specialist, we are told that we have to take care of our self interests too, because if we don't, then we can become mentally unhealthy... I don't know how to word it correctly... But, the opposite of being Mentally healthy, and not necessarily mentally unstable either. This is why the change for my major from business to sociology. But after hearing that you didn't have to take math for your degree... Hmmmm... Can I drop my sociology and just go into music now!!! LOL!!! Just kidding! But, this is why I really want to get into my new major of sociology. I really love being able to be a peer support. I love TAY (Transitional Age Youth [ages 16 - 25]) and the senior citizens, because they go through this same dilemma that both you and I have gone through. Finding ourselves for who we are and not what we are. Like you, I too would say, I do this or I do that, etc. But wasn't able to say I am .... After the peer employment training, I am now able to say that I am.... My computer is about to die, so I'll end it here.

    Honestly, you know who we are? We're people who can't do things casually. That's about it. Be it flute, piano and math (for me), RUclips, whatever ... we immerse ourselves. We're immersers.
    Updated: You know, regarding the whole "Why do it if I can't do it like that other person?" thing, there's a wonderful quote from Martha Graham about this: "There is a vitality, a life-force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it! It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. ... No artist is pleased. [There is] no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.”
