Yes! Honestly, one of my favourite lines of the show! I regularly say, ‘I would never say this to his/her face…’ followed by a really nice compliment. I’m still waiting for someone to question it as Oscar did 😕
Yeah unfortunately. The office had the misfortune of being up against 30 Rock for most of its run, where 30 Rock beat them out. then they were beat out by Modern Family.
I broke and burst into tears when Dwight read the recommendation letter Michael gave him. I don't remember if it was in this episode, but it was so sweet.
The thing that always makes me cry is Pam at the end because she was essentially his guardian angel/babysitter all those years. It's fitting that she be the one to let him go last, as he's finally growing up and leaving home.
But I also see that Michael helped her. When she was at the art show, it was Michael that supported her. And there were other moments when she respected Michael as a boss and didn’t see him as a kid. But yes, I see what you mean.
For the record too, Jenna Fischer explained that when she went up to Steve at the end of the episode they just said their ACTUAL fair-wells to one another. It didn’t really have to do anything with the show itself she just said it was two friends who were saying their goodbyes. I mention this because a lot of ppl asked her over the years what Pam said to Michael when he left
Pam hugging Michael goodbye in the airport is one of my top 3 moments from the show, along with Michael's proposal to Holly and Erin admitting she thinks of Michael as a father figure.
Yes! And I also love the Holly proposal, as well as the "I will Remember You song" from Andy... Being such a ridiculous show, the touching moments tend to hit you harder.
5:43 this scene was sad enough when I first watched it, but finding out this was the last scene filmed intentionally and those emotions were legit made me tear up all over again.
My favorite moment in this episode is the first time Michael tears up. He's sitting by himself in the breakroom eating lunch when Jim, Pam and Kevin come in to have lunch and ask Michael to join them, but because Michael is feeling reflective he declines saying he's almost done. As he's finishing eating he simply listens to the conversation that the 3 of them are having which is about a new printer coming in and how it was probably Kevin who broke the old printer and Michael begins to break and tear up. I love this scene because it's so relatable if you have ever left somewhere that you truly cared about. The conversation that makes Michael tear up is so mundane and common but for Michael it's suddenly put so sharply into focus that those mundane, boring everyday moments that made up his time at this place he will never be a part of again. His security blanket is gone.
he also finally gets what he's been trying to get the entire show, inclusion. they invited him to join them, something he's been trying to get his employees to do for years by putting on his whole 'funny guy' routine. although it backfired and ostracized him even more, his entire life he's only wanted friends. he's invited to stay the day he has to leave, and instead of taking it, he sits back and embraces his new life. it really shows how michael has shed his desperate need for attention.
I always thought of the last look he gives to the office (and everyone going on with their day) as him seeing that they'll be ok without him, but that explanation that he finally doesn't need their attention and is okay with just watching hit me like a truck. What a perfect way to resolve possibly his most foundational character flaw.
I cry every single time I watch this episode. The beauty of this is how calculated and mature Michael is with his exit. Shows how much he grows through the series. Truly the greatest goodbye in TV history and it's not close
And with this episode, Steve Carell lost the Emmy to Jim Parsons for The Big Bang Theory… they couldn’t even give him one award just for his final episode, when it possibly is his best performance on the show. Of course award shows often get it wrong anyway so it’s no big surprise he never received an Emmy for The Office.
It's impossible to see even a screen grab of the Jim and Michael or Michael and Pam at the end of this episode without getting somewhat emotional. Incredible show
The way it seems, based on the couple of moments he breaks that "fun michael" character, I really think that the whole Goofy thing was an act the whole time, especially made clear in the murder mystery episode when he finally snaps on Jim and calls the game "stupid", I believe the whole reason he acted the way he did, and the whole reason his branch led in sales and didn't get shut down, is because rather than having the employees criticize one another, he purposely acted the way he did to direct most of the disdain toward himself, causing the employees to form a bond based on how they all view Michael in the same light, and use him as a punching bag. Not to say he wasn't a genuinely strange and joking kind of guy, but I believe most of the strange activities that he made the employees take part in were all bonding activities in the sense that they make the employees feel connected stronger in their bond of how weird their boss is. Hence why when Michael is in an actual serious situation, he immediately switches tone and cuts that character out. This is why he hated Toby so much, it isn't because Toby is the boring lame HR guy, it's moreso that Toby in his eyes gets in the way of his methods and disrupts the "family" he's set up. The other people I'm the office like Toby, but only to a certain degree, if he steps out of the boundary of just "the HR guy", he makes them feel awkward and strange. They like him because he doesn't go to them directly about HR issues most of the time, he goes right to Michael, which is why Michael can't stand him, yet when he meets Holly, he hates her at first, but when he realizes she is actually a fun person like he is, he grows to like her. A bit long winded but I think you get the point
part of it I found was that michael creating his own scenarios is that he wants something fun. He wasn't happy about his life and wanted to make things thay was fun for him. He is also aware of how those things can help relieve everyones stress but a lot of it is selfish for him. When he finds something fulfilling, he isn't worried about being desperate to find connections.
You also see this when he leaves Jim in charge for the day and he messes up with combining birthdays. Michael is very grounded in consoling Jim and admitting he juat says "that's what she said" to keep things light hearted.
No shame, I’m sobbing as if I lost a love one every time. But I guess I really am losing a loved one Every. Single. Time. I just can’t handle the emotions man. This is the best goodbye I’ve ever seen on TV
This really is a perfect episode. Pam running up to Michael, shoes in hand, for a silent farewell, is one of my favourite moments from the show. The Jim and Michael scene isn't far behind.
There were two references to the first Christmas episode. There's Phyllis knitting the mittens and Michael really wanting them as opposed to his reaction to the oven mitt he previously received from her. Also, he's shooting yellow paintballs which received when he ended up with Dwight's gift in the Yankee swap.
I only watched the office for the first time during the pandemic, and in some way, tye characters became my coworkers and friends, since i live alone, this episode broke me, it was like Michael was leaving from my life too
One of the things that makes the office such an effective comedy is that it gets you so connected to the characters that the most emotional and serious moments legitimately get to you
I loved and still love The Office and I can watch most episodes over and over again. What's ironic though, is that Michael was so cringy in the show's early days, that I find it hard to watch the first season, yet he eventually became such an integral, beloved part of the series, that find it just as hard to watch beyond season 7, after Michael's departure.
What made 'The Office' great was the fact that they gave justice to everyone (character dev) except for Andy. It was like all of them have been through a lot and seeing them succeed in life makes me cry everytime especially the Jim and Dwight saga always made me tear up.
I remember starting this show at a slumber party when I was 15 and watching Michael leave when I was in college. I was sobbing in my dorm room that I barely saw the last few minutes. Now I’m 30 with a family and still love this incredible show.
that final moment is so beautiful. the tenderness, the intimacy. we don’t need to hear what they said. that is their moment. and yet we know everything they said to each other. one of the greatest examples of showing rather than telling
I've lost count of the times i've binged this show from start to finish, and I love it all. But yes, when Michael left, it was the end of an era. Sometimes i just have it playing in my background, esp when i need to be cheered up. Some people listen to music, but my happy place is "The Office." Best show ever. If I could only watch one show, for the rest of my life, on repeat....it would be The Office.
I've finished watching The Office for the first time a few days ago, and I got so sad not understanding that Michael was leaving for good ! He was so central that I really thought he would come back a few episodes later but then realized he wouldn't so now I'm disappointed I didn't appreciate his goodbye episode for what it was !

The way they handled his character growth in Season 7 was so beautifully done. He’s still a flawed person but he’s far better of a man than he was in Season 1. It made his happy ending feel earned.
Worst part of the episode is will Ferrell’s character. He was new, annoying, and forcefully inserted into situations with a cast/staff that earned their emotional connection. Perfect example of how this feels is when the office sings Michael song about how long he’s been with them. Ferrell feels so out of place it’s annoying, even though he isn’t even doing something stupid.
I'm just starting to binge watch the office. When I was watching season 2, can't wait for Michael to leave. Now that I'm in season 6, I'm dreading to get to the end of season 7. Michael Scott kinda grows on you You'll learn to love his character.
If only Deangelo, Will Ferrel, wasn’t in it, it would have been the perfect to perfect episode. But it is still a episode that is perfect and I cried the first time I saw it. Michael and Jim’s promise for lunch and the airport scene got me.

Great episode and great vid, but I'm surprised there was no mention of the recreated intro scene where Michael is readjusting the dundee trophy on his desk. Always thought that was a very nice touch.
