It's alot easier to hit the vault when it has 3 times the area, better padding built with the athlete in mind. I don't believe that any of these athletes could achieve any of these modern vaults using equipment from 50 years past
A general feature of the past. In skiing there were no mats either and instead of safty nets they had wooden fences... In car races it was normal that someone died every now and then etc. After the war the whole safty culture was different and certainly there was also less experience how to make things safer.

She knew there would be repercussions for that but did it anyhow. On a lighter note, she also performed with a beehive hairdo that stayed in place through her routines. 😀
Vera was the only gymnast, male or female, to have won an Olympic gold medal in each individual event. She was also the first gymnast to achieve a Perfect 10. She died in 2016.
It is striking that they stayed almost the same time in the air between the board and the mat. So at least, gravity has not changed since then significantly...
In school we didn’t have mats or the jump board and I was less than 5’ tall but we didn’t know any better. I gave it my all and the school nurse ended up calling my mother to take me to the hospital (they didn’t call for an ambulance, either). My dominant arm looked like a swan’s neck. When my mother got to the school I heard the nurse warn her that it looked bad and to be careful how she reacted so she didn’t scare me. I was only gently crying because of the pain and was mortified that my mother had to leave work. It was a compound fracture. Big cast and I could barely dress myself. All I kept thinking while I was healing was, “I guess I’m no Olga Korbut.” It’s been a long life of, “I guess I’m not …”, but not for a lack of trying!

Vera Caslavska from the former Checoslovakia! She participated at the Olympic Games in Mexico in 1968. She made such a beautiful impression because of her gymnastics skills, and was known as the Queen of the Olympic Games. Vera married at the Cathedral in Mexico City. This video brings me beautiful ❤memories of my childhood!!! ❤❤❤
Those hard, thin mats were easier to stand on after landing, but they were really painful, too. The impact went through your whole body, it was almost like landing on the hard gym floor.

Yes there’s a difference but you have to remember the actual equipment, vault was so small and the board had no springs, bars were closer loads of things but you can appreciate how insane the difference is
@@charlottedrew9714 when I was in high school in late 70s the mats we used were wrestling mats so about an inch thick and if you fell it was only slightly better than hitting the gym floor lol! Also the springboard had no springs, just a carpeted wooden board on top with a curved piece of wood under that to give the “spring”. That was at the school but the gym I also trained at had a bit of springs in the floor as well as springs in the vaulting board.

Literally. The vault from back then is what we were performing at age 6 in the 90s. That's the main reason this sport is so dangerous. The way it's evolving, it's getting harder and harder but the human body is still a human body. There are limits to what our bones can take but the evolution in gymnastics doesn't seem to have limits
I heard she might be doing a new vault at the Olympics(triple twisting) if so and she actually lands it she will have her 1st skill named after her which would be pretty cool. 👍🏻
Vera. Caslavska is one of the greatest Olympians ever - IMHO. Her protest on the medal platform cost her a career back home. She was a dignified patriot as well as a powerful gymnast.

I used to be a drummer when I was Young And the 70s picked it back up in the 80s.And nineties But the things these younger drummers do wasn't Heard of when I was learning they are incredible Every generation gets better
1964 slow motion vault is not even the same as the original speed one. There is no step in the original speed one. There is a step on the 1964 slow motion tho

As I said to those people who are obsessed with landings: you can have perfect landings all the time with a simple, single tumble vault. It doesn't mean that you did a better vault. Execution and difficulty of the vault rules supreme.

The performance of both was shaped by the technology of the time. Since Vera's time, we improved the horse to a "ramp", decreasing the amount of accuracy the gymnast has to have on the lift-off and allowing them to focus a lot more on what they do while they're IN the air. They both do their best with what they have available. I know I for one would be a lot more gutted if I failed due to the equipment than due to me trying something outside of my capabilities.

Do keep in mind that it's easy to see someone achieve top performance and think that it's all down to their own hard work and genetic gifts. In any sport, a big part of what makes someone successful is what we've learnt from previous generations.

É q hoje as ginastas também fazem treino pra aumentar a força, musculação, etc. Antigamente não faziam tanto, por isso eram bem magrinhas e não tinham o mesmo corpo que as de hoje.
We had to do the 1964 vault in gym class in the 70s...no we were not gymnast. As part of our gym class we had to learn to vault onto and over the horse. It did not have to be a flip, you could just hit it and jump over. We also had to climb ropes, learn a back flip, or rollover.
Almost unfair to compare, the equipment was so different. Also the vaults aren't comparable. The back round off before the springboard starts rotation before the vault. I am impressed how far the Czech lady flew to mount the vault, plus her form and landing were almost impeccable.

In the later 70's we had a spring in the board. It's just not as noticeable unless the gymnast hits it with enough force. It is or was wooden.

I'm a young teen and a gymnast. I'm currently working on that skill. Rebeca's vault is much more difficult
I've seen it used as a training vault for young gymnasts, but it wouldn't be worth it in competition.
Almost unfair to compare, the equipment was so different. Also the vaults aren't comparable. The back round off before the springboard starts rotation before the vault. I am impressed how far the Czech lady flew to mount the vault, plus her form and landing were almost impeccable.
I used to bmx professionally and WOW has that sport changed!!
Looked much more difficult back then. Pioneer women
Uh, not really. The second one is a much more difficult vault. The older one is just a basic level 1 vault.

@@JLDReactions I mean the jump to get up to the vault was much more difficult back then, and if she had managed what the 2020 girl did she would have been severely injured landing on that flat a** mat.

There is something simple and perfect about the 1964 clip. When the task is super uncluttered like this then you can see every imperfection. It is simple and not easy.
There’s also the fact that it was easier to land without stumbling due to the difference in mats(or rather the lack thereof)
