I remember my aunt living in Ponte Tower (city) in the 80s. It was so classy and clean then. Reminded one of a modern European living space. It ended up having dead bodies and trash piled up in its centre as Hillbrow went to the dogs.
Thank you for this video. Lovers of Architecture and design really appreciate this building. I'm one of them. I have the pleasure of a great view of it from the outside of my Father's house in a suburb called Bertrams.
My son did a time-lapse of upgrades that were done recently, he took some amazing shots from the inside, I wish I could add them to the comments. I didn't sleep for two weeks while he was working there, but the images are well worth it ❤
Thank you for this video! I just came across this tower's history today and wanted to see if the courtyard was always intended to be left as exposed rockbed and concrete. You can see the foundation work picture at the midpoint of the short.
A first world country where 80% of the population lived below the poverty line? SA has never been a first world country. Even East Germany had a higher average standard of living! Only a small percentage had access to first world amenities in SA, while others died from hunger and preventable diseases, which was unheard of in East Germany.
We had a beautiful city and country and was proud to be a South African citizen BUT then came the rot and destroyed our wonderful country. Will never be the same again
@@itsjose07 nope, wrong again. back then police worked for a living not for the ability to coerce members of the public to "buy an officer some Steers." or face fines or jail time, tax funds allocated for maintenance and running of state utilities and infrastructure were put to those uses and not looted by the leader of the country, his comrades and two Indian puppet masters, a whole war was fought in the 80's to prevent people from just walking over our borders and making themselves at home while putting a constraint on our social services or so they could set up a crime ring. and if youre so worried about overpopulation tell all your mates with 6 kids and no job to knock off the patla patla. theres a lot more to our countries history than apartheid and colonialism, maybe try reading about the things that dont cater to your ability to claim victim hood for sympathy gains or blame shifting capability sometime. and we are all equal now; all of us who dont have the means to bugger off out of SA have the same bleak future ahead thanks to the "vote ANC to keep blacks in power" mentality of the past 30 years. its just easier for you to blame a system of segregation that was over before you were born than take responsibility for the mess you guys caused.
@@itsjose07That make no sense. Things worked when things were unfair but now that there is equality there isn't enough to go around? If things are equal there should be more shared amongst everyone. SA today is in its worst situation ever in recent history.

One thing that could have improved the building, if the first 4 stories was open air galleria, and sections open vertically.
