Man, Hamza Yusuf is impressive: quoting Frost from memory, citing Brezinksi, Hobbes, Locke, sticking it to Tony Blair, all while not even having a speech prepared. I'm a humanities PhD student at Stanford, and it would be rare to see a professor here run that gamut.

His brain works in a different way. He has been raised through many years of traditional tasawwuf in the Darqawi and other lineages; not to mention traditional Islamic learning, including rote memorization of entire books; coupled with a constant inspection and inward interpretation of those books.

@@sarah-amena Everyone is listening to everyone...whether you "I think everyone should." But very few men in modern time ever came close to his level of understanding on a broader spectrum. Heck, his teachers, next to them, he himself stated that he is nothing compared to them.
There are great people and listening to them is overall great, but very few ever put out insightful thoughts that are backed by such knowledge. Hamza Yusuf does that and that draws attention. Simple as that.

@@spartacushermeticus1746 well perhaps starting from his adolescence would be more precise as he was not raised in a Muslim family, he is a convert in fact and after he launched a new journey. A beautiful mind and heart he has.

wow, Suzana awesome, to the point and insightful. Respect for the young catholic woman! She identified the problems well and suggested manageable solutions along with the other panellists. Along with education, employment, to reduce intolerance the mainstream media really needs has to play a more ethical factual role that they were supposed to in the first place. It seems investigative journalism has gone down the drain. No matter what the your editor's or channel executive's personal prejudices are, as a journalist you need to do justice. I would like to mention social media, particularly FB, has been at the forefront of disseminating false news and misrepresentation of facts, which has deluded many nations across the globe and empowered the idiots.

Humanity must progress and evolve, which means we need to go beyond the past and focus on the future. We must collectively be willing to see the beauty of our awesome global religious and spiritual diversity. If you think your path to God is the only one, that it is one of the greatest conflicts humans have and creates a state of separation, the terrible 'us against them' tribalism. What we need are people who are living as reflections of the ideals we believe in; love, compassion, mercy, kindness, generosity, being caretakers of our planet, and so many other moral and ethical ideals.
We are living in a time of great potential for human development and globalization. We will never end wars and violence if people don't create a positive vision for the future of our planet. This would include one of our most important human rights, which is religious freedom. May we all awaken to the great beauty in the collective diversity of our human family! Peace and countless blessings to all.
