Two things that brought me piece of mind in my later years: 1) I stopped trying to fit into, and be accepted within, the social circle in which I lived, and 2) I stopped living in relation to the popular culture and social system, and started living outside of it. I found my friends became fewer and truer, and the burden of our decaying society became less. Now my purpose is to teach these values to my grand children. Excellent video Alan.
As a former prosecutor I find it very "interesting" ( incredulous) that people will scorn anyone who smokes a pipe, cigar or cigarets BUT think it's perfectly fine to smoke marijuana or vape. The woke community has not only lost their "never-loving" minds BUT they are working overtime to destroy everything that "they" don't approve. You are so correct to not allow others to dictate to you.
Not trying to get into politics here but I never understood why it was acceptable to drink Alcohol but not smoke Marijuana. In my own experience, Alcohol is a much harder drug which has far more negative consequences on society that I don't see with Marijuana. I never heard a story where a dad would come home, smoke some pot and then beat his wife and kids but I have heard those stories about alcohol and I've watched a couple friends lose everything they had because of alcohol. Personally, I think everything should be legal because prohibition doesn't stop demand and if there is demand, someone will supply that demand because there is money to be made. Black markets only make criminality worse.
@@andrewwomble2722 Not to siderail things, but you bring up a commonly made point. To clarify, alcohol is a traditional drink that has saved millions of lives. I know it's odd to think about, but we have to remember that alcohol was the only safe drink in the world for thousands of years, and thus is more than just "something to get you drunk". The alcohol kills pathogens that would otherwise kill someone. It's also to point out that the overwhelming majority of people who drink alcohol do not use weed, however, the overwhelming majority of people who smoke weed do actually use alcohol, too. And, yes, there are plenty of stories about people being high and causing all sorts of problems. The stories just don't get the airtime because there's a concerted effort by very powerful groups to get weed normalized and legalized. You should worry when you see the government actually trying to get you more access to mind-altering substances, especially after decades of demonizing smoking. That tells you they have an ulterior motive! To your point about everything being legal, that was already tried in a lot of nations, and it destroys nations. Just look at the cities in the US where drugs have been normalized and are common. Are they utopias? Great Britain was almost destroyed in the old days because opium was legal and they had no idea just what it would do to their nation. No culture can survive without lines drawn in the sand somewhere. This is okay, but that's not. We don't have to like it, but that's the breaks. If you don't do that, things devolve into chaos because your argument for legalizing weed can also be made for legalizing every harder drug. Or doing things with children. Or multiple wives. Or head-hunting as religious expression. In the end, it comes down to defining and defending the culture. We spent generations teaching people that drinking to excess was a bad thing not just because it was bad for the individual, but it was bad for the whole society. Now, people are trying to glorify the worst behaviors and yet wondering why society seems to be having so much difficulty.
Sounding a lot like Ayn Rand here Mr. Harrelson. I like. I really loved your line " When did the hallmark of a gentlemen become defined by what you do not do more than what you OUGHT to do?". Thats good stuff friend.
I have enjoyed pipe and cigar smoking, as well as whiskey drinking for many years and have never paid the few naysayers any mind. A Southern man isn't concerned with that nonsense. You know as well as I do that some of the most enjoyable company a man will ever keep is shared around mutual love of premium tobacco. Well said as always, Alan. Blessings from Louisiana.
I've always appreciated the following quote: "The older I get, the less I care what others think of me. Therefore, the older I get, the more I enjoy life". I'm 64 years old and I'm just starting to have an interest in pipe smoking. It's just a matter of finding out what blends I will enjoy.
Well said, Alan. I am also a Christian, and other Christians have told me that I shouldn't be smoking a pipe. Ironically, these same people don't mind quoting some of the pipe-smoking Christians of the past, like J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis!
Growing up as a preachers son, this topic is quite a sensitive subject. I can only speak from my experience, but it caused me to always worry about what others think of me. It was engrained into every cell of my body. As a 47 year old man I am just now learning how to let that go. That’s one of the greatest advice anyone could…do not ever care what others think of you. You have one life on this earth. Live it how you want to live it, in every way.
There it is, in a nutshell, with a bow on top. "When did the hallmark of a gentleman become defined by what you did not do more than what you ought to do?" I think the most appropriate question of the last decade has finally been asked. That's the kind of quote that gets embroidered on something that will be hung in a conspicuous place in the home & is food for thought in all parts of our modern lives. Thank you for another wonderful video.
As a family friend and mentor to me once said; "There is no shortage of people in the world who will disagree with you and your life choices and others that will applaud you. Neither matter in the grand scheme of things and what brings you happiness and does no harm to others, in the end is all that matters." I never forgot those words and all the sage advice he gave me over the years.
Great chat Alan. I appreciate you prompting the discussion. I have chosen to leave church congregations due to the vilification of my alcohol and tobacco consumption practices. Fortunately I find myself in a setting in life with support and appreciation of my hobbies. And to anyone who has a problem with anything I do in my free time… frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.
I appreciate your comments Alan. So many people have preconceived notions about the pipe smoking hobby because they just don't understand it. I also appreciate your comments on General Lee a personal hero of mine! His character was second to none! Thanks for the great content.
Spot on. You and I probably think very much alike, not only about pipes, but in many respects. I would also add that “physical health “ is not all there is to overall “wellbeing”. The joy and relaxation and “reset” that for many comes with smoking a bowl of fine tobacco from a beautifully crafted pipe is just as beneficial to their mental health, or dare I say spiritual health, as exercise or diet is to their physical health. All things in moderation. Negative stereotypes are attached to many things these days where they should not exist, and probably always have been, but I simply cannot see the negative of a hobby that belonged to so many and wonderful brilliant writers, philosophers, statesmen, soldiers, sailors and Marines, and grandparents and parents, etc … The observation of the mark of a gentleman was spot on as well.
I'm convinced the southern drawl makes it easier for some people to let the pipe smoking slide when they would not in other circumstances. 😂 Thanks for the video, Alan!
Your channel is excellent! I'm not religious, I don't enjoy reading, but I enjoy pipe smoking, and being a responsible man. Oddly enough I've never been negatively judged for smoking a pipe, but I fully support keeping to yourself, providing you're not creating problems for others, or ignoring your responsibilities.
When I smoke my pipe wandering uptown, I usually get nothing but pleasant comments about the wonderful aroma. I don't usually put too much stock in what others think of me, and surely, as a former worship leader and a Christian author, I have met plenty of Christian folks who seem to live life to judge others, (my pipe habits and others public short comings). This is just a sad fact of life; However, as in your household, I'll do me, and others should take care of their own logs first. I always try to be courteous about it, but I learned as I grew older, I would never please everyone, heck I probably won't even please a majority, (🤔) but that isn't my job, pleasing others. Living the best life that I can, teaching my children right from wrong and loving their mother, following the Gospel call to love as much as I can, and give Grace as much as I can, that is my daily walk. And often, it is accomplished with a hot cup of coffee and a nice pipe. Thank you for the conversations, they are a welcome part of my day. 🤠
True. The fact that the FDA said it has very little negative impact on health a couple years back helps with the argument as well. Plus the statistics show that pipe smokers live longer than your average American, which can also give weight to imbibing from time to time. As the early Church Fathers and some of the great Saints have said, moderation is the key to virtuous use of anything. God bless
Robet E. Lee, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, R.L. Dabney, James H. Thornwell, J.P. Boyce ... great Southern Christian gentlemen who are role models throughout the ages.
Well said, Dr. Harrelson! I’m heading towards 62 years old and have just started smoking my pipe again after a 32 year hiatus. I did not realize how much I had missed it. I firmly state that the world we grew up in is gone. I just retired and really enjoy the peaceful serenity of a good long smoke. I have recently started watching your videos and applaud the work and conversation that you have put forth. Keep it up; you have my attention, Sir. May God Bless
I can definitely relate to these self conscious concerns. I received my first pipe as a gift from my father when I was in my early twenties, and bought a few more after that because I truly did enjoy them. However, I am sure anyone can tell you how many 20 something year olds they see enjoying a pipe around the world so I was very concerned with the impression it gave. Luckily I have not long been deterred from anything that I have a passion for and was able to shake these feelings. Now that I have returned to pipe smoking full time, a little older and a little wiser, there's not a word that could be spoken that would give me pause when it comes to responsibly enjoying tobacco. A side note, the vilification of cigars and pipes along side cigarettes and vaping is truly infuriating. They are not 1 in the same.
I’m a Christian. And I just started smoking cigars. Been a great experience. But I think using a pipe might better fit my daily work life. Thanks for the content. It’s great.
…..new to pipe and tobacco. Both were a gift from my wife… it was a big surprise, as I had mentioned on passing that I’d want try a gentleman’s leisurely pass time of a fine pipe. I found you channel and thank you for your time and information.
Good topic to discuss. My wife just rolled her eyes when she “discovered” me smoking, as I’ve never been a smoker. Now I enjoy a pipe, or two, daily. Interestingly enough, she requested I wear a smoking jacket😂, which I had been.
I recently bought my first peterson and posted a picture of the pipe after my first smoke on Facebook with pride. Got some mixed reactions lol. Didnt expect that. Frankly I find pipe smoking so relaxing I can't believe more people don't smoke a pipe.
To me I go on my back deck sit and when I lite my pipe, I then stop and enjoy life. I have no thought on what people think, I just take in all around me and enjoy my corn cob pipe
Some folks I know, do not approve of my pipe smoking or cigar smoking. I simply avoid them. I have robed them of the opertunity to ridicule me and they have robed themselves of the chance to have me as a friend. Interestingly, I do not feel I have lost anything.
As a fellow Christian, I’m concerned about what others think, but only to the point of whether what I’m doing is inherently offensive or impedes my ability to share the gospel. Folks who are offended by pipe smoking are choosing to be offended, and nothing I can do is going to fix that. If I gave up my pipes they’d find something else to be put off about.
This will be my 3rd week since I started smoking pipes and I've already had silly comments like "surely there's better hobbies you could have other than smoking" said to me in person. I'm not planning on stopping. Smoking my pipe encourages me to listen more and I am one of those people that likes to talk more than listen, so I like the effect it has on me. I appreciate your comments, Alan. Thank you for this video.
Wonderful topic, discussed with honesty. Men today need to have a backbone and to be comfortable in who they are without worrying if they are “accepted”. You captured it perfectly at the end of the video when you stated, “ Be kind, be courteous, but don’t let people run all over you.” Keep on keeping on!
My experience with others (in public) seeing me smoke a pipe is surprise and respect. It has even spawned a healthy interest in the hobby. Invokes a sense of wisdom to those who are going with the contemporary flow.
Interesting video. I"m a pastor in a church where most people probably don't approve of any kind of smoking. I enjoy my pipes on my back patio late at night and don't talk about it to anyone. I believe this fulfills Paul's teaching to not make anyone stumble in Romans 14:13ff.
Very interesting perspective. I am a 100% atheist, but I respect people's right to choose their own path. I had never really considered tobacco use and how it might present an internal conflict when put in a social/religious context before listening to your thoughts. Also, really good quote from Aurelius...definitely gives one a good reason for pause in many situations.
Very well said. I started smoking a pipe and cigars during high school in the early 70's. I always found it funny when I would smoke around my friends while the were smoking marijuana and they would say, get that stinking thing away from here.
Im 41 and have been a pipe guy since 17 yrs old. I use to get a lot of gruff for it when I was younger. I never paid any mind to it. I smoked my pipe, read my books and chose to ignore it. Since joining the Lodge many years ago, many of my Brothers now enjoy the pipe because of me.
I’m the only person I know who smokes a pipe, I have never had anyone tell me anything negative about it. I have had several people tell me that it smells amazing, or that it reminds them of their grandpa or their dad. I feel it’s a positive thing to help someone remember loved ones that way. Crazy how a smell will bring back memories.
I could watch tour videos all day. Love the wit and wisdom. Keep up the great work. I ordered the apricot and cream tobacco from you. Can't wait to try it
We certainly live in some crazy times don't we? I'd rather have people look at me oddly for wearing suspenders and smoking a pipe instead of having my pants sagging and having kool aid colored hair. Then again, I could care less what they think. Love your comment about men doing what they ought to do. Might have to scratch that on a piece of wood and hang it in my shop... Anyway, keep up the good work and Godspeed sir. Presbyterian is one of my favorite tobaccos by the way.
Amen, Brother! Preach! I thank the Good Lord for this after dinner Scotch and pipe I am enjoying right now. They are the fruits of His good Creation and also the results of men made in His image utilizing their God-given creativity. There is nothing wrong with enjoying God's good gifts in moderation.
You’re definitely preaching to the choir lol.. Your value system and mine seem very similar. Being someone who puts there own interest in front of others doesn’t mean you should hurt others or be disrespectful. Amen brother good talk 👏👏
Okay, I literally heard the accent and subscribed. Then I heard the last few minutes: the world needs way more of this: lived out theology of the "Southern Gentleman". Love this and thanks!
It's more important than ever to stop caring what others think about you. Standing up for your principles, your beliefs and your actions is simply vital.
I don't care what other people think. But, I do believe as a gentleman and representative of the pipe smoking community, that we need to be respectful of those around us when we do smoke in public Just found your channel via The Diabetic Prepper. Good stuff.
“Let each man be fully persuaded” this is the scripture I use when talking about gray subjects especially tobacco use. To him that thinks it is a sin, let him refrain. For if he were to partake, to him it would be a sin.
Thank you for the thoughtful encouragement Alan. The considerable pressure to bend to the will of the government, the establishment or even "well meaning" acquaintances must be resisted. I have smoked cigars for 15 years and added pipes fairly recently and since finding your channel am enjoying your wit and sensibilities both comforting and familiar. Carry on and know that we're out here.
Wow! This video was knocked out of the park! I am a new pipe smoker (6 months). I am a long-time Baptist pastor. I needed to hear this! My only regret about pipe smoking is that I wished I had started years ago! P. S. I recently bought my Tobacco from your online store. Early morning, Night Cap, and Presbyterian blend!
Them's some good blends, sir! I'm also a private pipe smoker of the last couple of years and, at my age (late seventies), care little abut what other people who want to dictate what I can and cannot do, think.
In CT they just legalized marijuana use but continue to demonize tobacco use of any kind.I also admire Robert E.Lee, a true Christian gentleman.Marus Aurelius was one of the wisest men who ever lived. His book of meditations is on my night table.
I really appreciate this channel that I have only recently discovered. Recently my family and I have moved from the suburban hellscape of Long Island NY to southeast Tennessee. We absolutely love it here. Upon landing in paradise I quickly assumed the hobby of pipe tobacco and stumbled across your channel. I greatly appreciate your words in this video and in general. Once you spoke of Marcus Aurelius I knew I had found a brother in spirit so I greatly look forward to watching more of your videos. I love your accent as I’m sure many have commented. I am expecting my first shipment of various tobaccos tomorrow and am soon to buy a higher quality pipe but still only around $100. I like the Peterson Aran Rusticated 120 and the Savinelli 207. I am also looking to homestead on my 4 acres. Chickens, kunekune pigs and a miniature Jersey dairy cow. Of course a garden as well. I really love how men are turning back to the things that our grandfathers and their fathers have as their culture and reviving what made this country great. With strength and virtue we can make it great again. Look forward to watching more from you. Take care and keep up the inspirational content sir.
I agree 100%. I didn't really have this problem, but I can understand how there are people that do. I'm very nice and courteous but as long as I'm in my own delegated area and not disturbing anyone that I shouldn't be, I don't care one bit if someone likes me smoking a pipe or not in public. Thanks for another great and meaningful video. Take care.
Well said brother. Excellent job of connecting behaviors to gentlemanly virtue. As your thoughts on the matter so closely mirror my own, I cannot provide further comment beyond simple praise for such an excellent vid.
I wish you much success with your store. I appreciate your dialect. Just ordered the book Red Hills and Cotton and I can not wait until it arrives so I can read it and enjoy my pipe.
Here in Japan, people don't day anything they just cough loudly, but it doesn't bother me! If there's no "no smoking" sign then I am allowed to light my pipe. I work hard long hours to provide for my family and the peace that pipe smoking brings me helps combat the stress of everyday life
I like what you said about don't agitate a situation. If you're somewhere that you know you should not light up, then respect that. If you're somewhere where it won't be a problem, then by all means. I rarely smoke my pipe outside my home, so the only one I need worry about is my girlfriend, and depending on what type of blend I'm smoking dictates what I need to do to keep the peace.
I really enjoy your casual presentations. I’ve enjoyed cigars for a long time and have recently begun to enjoy a good pipe. I worry more about what blend I should try next rather than what others may think. Again, there is iron in your words sir yet spoken with ease and in a gentlemanly fashion. This was a good reinforcement for me. With thanks, Troy from south Louisiana.
I enjoyed your intro and your library looks fantastic. You mentioned Marcus Aurelius. For the last two months I have really got into his writing and studying stoic. This was a very good talk. Temperance: all good things in moderation. Unless my desire to smoke a pipe becomes disordered and causes harm, then there is nothing sinful about anyone enjoying the gift. Peace be with all of you
Thank you for the enjoyable video, Alan. I’ve read about the topic of this video being a problem for people on various forums and find that I can’t relate. Living in the rural Pacific Northwest, nobody seems to mind that I smoke a pipe, and in fact people have only had nice things to say about it when I do smoke in public. From a cultural perspective, pipe smoking isn’t a deviation from what could be seen as ‘normal’ where I live, as it probably could be in a more urban or metropolitan setting. That rejection of socio-cultural norms is potentially what gives people anxiety about smoking a pipe in public I suppose. These people must overcome this fear at some point if they want to enjoy themselves not just in pipe smoking, but in life, as that is no way to live. That adds another line item to the list of reasons I will never move back to anything resembling a city. 😂
Taboo in Ireland too . As stores can’t advertise tobacco, most have stopped stocking tobacco. Certainly far too much focus on old tradition bashing. Greet post Alan , Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪

Stay the course my friend! Let’s keep the main thing the main thing..
I don't care what others think. I am a good guy and do the right things in life. Let's enjoy ourselves. I enjoy your channel.
To me I go on my back deck sit and when I lite my pipe, I then stop and enjoy life. I have no thought on what people think, I just take in all around me and enjoy my corn cob pipe
Meditations. Fantastic read.
You had me at stop thinking about what other people think
My experience with others (in public) seeing me smoke a pipe is surprise and respect. It has even spawned a healthy interest in the hobby.
Invokes a sense of wisdom to those who are going with the contemporary flow.
Well said Alan. I'm reflecting on it. With a coffee and a freshly lit pipe.
Well said. Take courage and take responsibility. These are two cornerstones of life.
As a Presbyterian Minister and pipe lover, I am lighting a bowl of Rivendell and saying "Amen and Amen!" You are a gentleman and a scholar.
“Do you” 👍 Well said!
Thank you so much for a wonderful statement. Your right I will not let others dictate to me what is best for me.
I whole heartedly agree.
Great video. As an emerging pipe smoker this video helped me. Very encouraging and well done sir. Thank you.
Can't wait to try it
Very good product. I'm doing a review on my RUclips channel later today
“When did the hallmark of gentlemen …”
That is the best quote I’ve hear in a LONG time
We certainly live in some crazy times don't we?
I lived a period of my life trying to please others. At the end of the day, it will be at the expense of your own wellbeing.
Great video, many thanks
Sir I’m glad I found your channel thank you for your time.
In CT they just legalized marijuana use but continue to demonize tobacco use of any kind.I also admire Robert E.Lee, a true Christian gentleman.Marus Aurelius was one of the wisest men who ever lived. His book of meditations is on my night table.
considering a pipe, and this was definitely weighing on my mind. I appreciate your words.
Alan, you're fast becoming my favorite RUclips piper!
Take care.
AMEN MY BROTHER! Love your channel!
Well said brother. Excellent job of connecting behaviors to gentlemanly virtue. As your thoughts on the matter so closely mirror my own, I cannot provide further comment beyond simple praise for such an excellent vid.
@@thepipecottage3301 My pleasure. I look forward to watching every time I see a new vid for your channel.
I wish you much success with your store. I appreciate your dialect. Just ordered the book Red Hills and Cotton and I can not wait until it arrives so I can read it and enjoy my pipe.
I like your videos and your personality! Well done!
I started smoking a pipe when I was 32. I finally confessed to my parents that I smoked pipes on my 50th birthday! LOL!
I too had/have disapproving parents!!
@@thepipecottage3301 , totally agree!
Excellent, sound advice sir! Agree 100%!!!!
Here in Japan, people don't day anything they just cough loudly, but it doesn't bother me! If there's no "no smoking" sign then I am allowed to light my pipe. I work hard long hours to provide for my family and the peace that pipe smoking brings me helps combat the stress of everyday life
Absolutely fantastic video Allen, i couldn't agree more 👍🏆.
Love the attitude, have thought that way practically all my life… adult life anyway.
Another great insight discussion and so on point, love your videos. Bings favorite is one one of my favorites ! God bless you and your family.
Brilliant and very well put, as always.
Thank you ! “ keep your head where you feet are at”
Well said. Thank you for taking your time to share your thoughts. Much appreciated.
I love seeing peoples reactions to seeing someone smoking a pipe . It doesn’t bother me in the slightest to smoke any one of my pipes out in public
Thank you so much for your wise words, Alan! I wish someone had said all this to me 50 years ago!!
Peace be with all of you
Nice to hear that message!
Loved this video. Thank you for posting!
Could not have said this better myself! Thank you kind sir.
Thank you God for this gentleman and his wisdom.
Taboo in Ireland too . As stores can’t advertise tobacco, most have stopped stocking tobacco. Certainly far too much focus on old tradition bashing. Greet post Alan , Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪
Thank you Sir for addressing this issue. I could not agree more!
