I have to say that Eric is the best classic Disney Prince. He will put himself at risk to protect his dog, He's friendly to a strange mute girl he just met and recognizes she is interested in the the world around her. He's awkward and shy and not egotistical. He bows respect to King Triton. He was also put under a spell to marry Ursula. You can see it by the glow in his eyes and the stuff manner of his body in the wedding and how he didn't react to Ursula kicking his dog. People who are triggered by this movie are way out of line and don't WANT to see the nuance in the Disney animation.
The other thing is that there are a lot of stipulations that are assumed only by Ariel and technicalities left unsaid by a manipulative Ursula. There is absolutely NO reason or barrier that prevents her from not seeing her father and sisters after becoming human other than needing oxygen and not the crushing pressure of the sea. But King Triton, GOD OF ALL THE OCEAN, could bend the water so she could walk on dry land under the sea and have pools of water available to let the fishfolk see her. Prince Eric could rebuild the castle to let water into the halls to allow his father-in-law to visit the castle (if we ignore the sequel). The fact that they are on a boat when they get married and have all the merfolk attend is evidence to that fact that indeed they can live side by side, and probably even be the most oleanonic conscious kingdom in the land. So people are wrong when they say that Arial gave up everything. That was ONLY what Ursula created in HER twisted terms of agreement.

We HAVE to ignore the sequel. Ariel deserves better. And I completely agree with everything!
Ariel wanted to live on land before she saw Eric. True love was just a fantastic bonus. They work together and save each other.
Ariel is an embodiment of adventure and a thirst for knowledge. Her curiosity and impulsivity helps her get into trouble.
If Triton can give her legs at the end he can turn Eric into a Merman for Mer-holidays.
Every person who marries and creates a new family will have a bit of distance that wasn't there before from their bio/original family. It's part of growing up and creating your own life.
This was my favorite movie when I was a kid and Eric was my role model of a man. I even tried to imitate that bow he gives to Triton, when I wanted to show respect to someone

@@shineexokpop6824 I want to say yes but no, snowhite did very well for Disney and Cinderella did after SW. That was the 30s/50s after that, the movies weren't making as much until the little mermaid in the 80s which started the renaissance and saved the company again.

In defense of Eric not knowing Ariel was the girl that saved him from the get go:
1. The guy was just waking up from being passed out after almost drowning when he saw her for the first time.
2. When she sang to him, Ariel's head was directly in front of the sun creating that cool halo effect around her head but also draping her face in shadows.
All in all, pretty understandable he latched on to her voice as a means of identifying her.
Ariel’s voice was basically her “glass slipper”.
Yeah and if you actually compare Ariel backlit by the sun as Erik first sees her, vs Vanessa... They look pretty identical actually. Literally the only difference is the eyecolour.
I love that Ariel being in front of the sun when Eric wakes up is the crux for the main misunderstanding of the film. A detail as small as her hair appearing darker in front of sunlight ultimately makes it that much more believable that he thinks Vanessa (Human Ursula) was the girl he saw, since she has the voice and the brown hair he’d remember. Also, Jodi Benson - Ariel’s voice actress - was indeed the voice of Vanessa too and apparently had a blast in the studio since her voice was never previously accepted for villain roles
Thank you for saying this cuz they missed that and I was about to comment that as well. Lol bcuz when you've had your eyes shut for too long it takes a minutebdor your eyes to adjust and they did a good job on the detail when Eric was slowly opening them. And also sun always hurts your eyes so it takes a little more time to adjust.
Yyyeah but that detail falls flat when the movie establishes it was magically hypnotizing Eric that did the trick, so whatever way she looked like wouldn't matter. The hair color would've been relevant if Ursula actually had used Ariel's voice as her own.

I'm glad that you immediately focused in on the father/daughter relationship in this movie. That's ultimately what this movie is about, and I think it's significant that the final line of the movie is "I love you, Daddy."
A lot of people (particularly people who haven't watched this movie since childhood) kind of miss that and simplify the story into Ariel just going to the surface for a guy, forgetting completely that "Part of That World" is sung before she ever sees Eric. She has big dreams. It's just that the combination of crushing on Eric, and the huge blowup with her father served as a catalyst to kick her into high gear, on wanting to follow her dreams. She definitely acts like a 16-year-old with a big crush, but she also has the energy of a passionate cultural anthropologist. She has her flaws, but I adore her.
It's like Anne Hathaway's in Interstellar; a sort of "just cause I love him doesn't mean there aren't also logicall/other reasons to go there, and I actually think it's like a sign that THAT is the place were to go" right? Or am I tripping?😂 It's my way to connect to it, since I didn't have that type of relationship with my dad.

I hear people dissing on this movie boiling the story down to "girl sacrifices everything she has for a guy she just met", calling it not a good moral to teach kids.They completely ignore the fact that Ariel's I Want Song, where she puts all her fascination and longing for the surface on full display, happens *before* she meets Eric, if anything Eric was just the straw that broke the camel's back on her willingness to make the deal with Ursula but I actually agree with you in that the fight with her father was also a big factor too, that's why Ursula immedietly sought her out while Ariel was in such a emotionally fragile state.
I definetly think Ariel is very implusive but that's a good thing, character flaws are what makes them feel like real people, can you imagine if modern disney made a story like that today? They would make her the most perfect character ever and make all conflict in the story come from other people not accepting how great she is, if you didn't notice I'm really scared about the remake.
And she's a teenager too, it's realistic that she would get into fights with her father specially when her passions seem so foreign to him, doesn't mean that they don't still love each other. She didn't start getting interested in the surface to spite her family, all Ariel wanted was pursue her dreams while still being certain of the love of her family, thus we get our happy ending.

There will always be people who complain about historical and cultural things they compare to today's society as though they should be the same. It's ridiculous.
The modern era is the only era in which girls aren't regularly getting married at 16 due to the health conditions of prior periods of history. Remember, death during childbirth and general overall health declining after 25 was normal. That's why getting married and having children before that age was so important.
And, let's be real, no one says a thing about 16 year olds looking and acting older irl and online, with too many getting busy and becoming teen baby mamas. So, what's the point being made here -- at 16, girls can do everything Except get married? Zero sense made
I love your explanation. There has always been something special about the Little Mermaid's storyline that hits close to home for me. I never understood why people didn't quite get it.
I'm really happy you guys understand Ariels decision to go to Ursula. A lot of people criticise her because "she's so dumb running away to be with someone she's never even met" but she doesn't, the thing that drives her away is her own father and Ursula preying on her while she's vulnerable.
And the fact that she was interested in the human world long before she even met Eric.
Yes! Ursula waited for the right moment to approach her, to take advantage of her. Titan literally just destroyed all of Ariel's treasures, things she had been collecting for years and adored, they meant everything to her, so she was mad. I don't think she would have even agreed to see her if it wasn't for Titan. I totally get his fear and how desperate he was to keep her safe but that was not the way and after she disappeared he knew he made a big mistake.
I also hate when people say she gave up her life for a man she just met! No, Ariel had wanted legs and to go up to the surface for a long time, she sang a whole freakin so about it! She wanted that way before she ever saw Eric, if anything Eric was just the catalyst for her to actually go up there, gave her a real reason to go up and accept the deal.

@@xfabian21 Most reactors I've seen watching this were mainly either parents or people who probably in general don't like kids,or are just old enough so when they see a very close portrayal of a child or teen that does stupid stuff at that age, they usually either reprimand Ariel, say how stupid and irrational she is, or just don't like her. I for one love this new angle I'm getting at for this movie
Exactly... she was an easy target.. naive, gullible and a desire for the human world... Eric was only the breaking point.
I really like the way Ariel says “My father’s gonna kill me!” at 6:25. There’s just something about it that sounds so natural, and it’s pretty fitting considering how worked up Triton can get.
It's also a very realistic teen thing to say lol. "Dad's/Mom's gonna kill me! Oh God!" lmfao.
I mean that was the scene that started the meme of the hipster princeses, didn't you know?

The bubbles were given to ONE person, I believe. Either that, or one team, and they had to go through the entire thing just to make them work and make sure they were all where they’re supposed to be!
I’m pretty sure it was all one person, because I distinctly remember an interview with the animator in a behind-the-scenes segment

Here's another fun fact, The little mermaid was the last Disney film to be hand drawn. Also, there were over 500 bubbles shown in the movie and every one of them was drawn-out by hand.
The script for this movie is so clever, like you don’t realise till you’re old enough to really appreciate it. The finale is so well written - you don’t, genuinely, have a clue how the hell Ursula is going to be defeated, she’s at the height of her power, the seas are going crazy, then the ship that was wrecked in the initial meeting between Ariel and Eric that you completely forget about for the rest of the film is what saves the day. Genius.
I always loved Ariel from the little mermaid movie, and the fact that Ursula actually lives inside a great dead sea creature, that is really scary. And when Ursula said that life is full of tough choices, she was actually right about that.

I have the little mermaid comic books it tells you how Ursula got her lair it’s pretty neat
It's called "the Serpentine", when Ariel was young she was captured by Eel people called the Moray who put her in a labyrinth with the creature.
Ariel ended up being so tricky that it flew into a bloodthirsty rage, forcing the Moray to kill it. After which Ursula comes along and offers the Moray a way to steal the trident in exchange for the Serpentines body (which she promptly made her home).
To answer your question: Yes, Jodie Benson, who voiced Ariel, also voiced Vanessa (Ursula's human disguise). Jodie also did the cackle during the transformation.
I remembered watching her on broadway in Crazy for you in the early 90’s. My mind was going “ahhhh thats the little mermaid!!”
Fun fact: Ariel's hair was original going to be curly but unfortunately at the time curly hair was almost impossible to animate.
I', glad they didn't or couldn't go that route, it wouldn't really make sense for her hair to be curly, maybe when she got legs but not when she was underwater. I love how her always is flowing. I use to want her hair so bad! From the volume to the color!
She was also going to be blonde, but there was a recent movie that came out featuring a blonde mermaid and they thought it'd be too similar. I am also so glad they went with red hair, it's so iconic!
@@toastoast There is an anime version that was made in 1975 that I had a copy of growing up and I watched it all the time, it’s closer to the book and she too had blonde her, her name was Marina.

The Little Mermaid on Broadway has a song that I wish could have been part of the original animated movie. I think it is called "One Step Closer" and it is a song Eric sings while he teaches Ariel how to dance and he sings about how dance is a way of talking without words. It is a cute song that adds to their chemistry together before they go out on the boat.
In the play, they explain Ursula is Triton's exiled sister and that humans did kill Ariel's mom, so you guys made some good guesses while watching!
The original script had Ursala as Triton's sister... that gives a little more credence to Ariel running away to her disgraced aunt when she gets in a fight with her dad.
Fact: to make this movie they used a model that made the scenes under a crystal pool, so the animators could see the movement of her hair, and the facial expressions. Before they basically used models to make the movie on live so the animators could “copy” the movie on drawing
The term you're looking for is rotoscoping which is what pretty much all of the painted Disney movies use which is why you can find videos of the actors preforming scenes live for the early princess movies!

@@unclewiley1986 no Disney animators made a point actually to not rotoscope directly as it results in weird animations. Rather they used actors as inspo for the movements, such as when Ariel is mute and mimics stuff or when she blows her hair out of her eyes. Not a rotoscope though
@@fabiofuoco I should have been clearer. Most early Disney movies used rotoscoping. Snow White, Cinderella and alot of the movies in that era were rotoscoped.
The line Ursula says about how she's "been reduced to practically nothing" makes a lot more sense when you see her in her true form LOL
something i feel like people don't realize/notice is that if Ariel kissed Eric before the third day and stayed human, she wouldn't have gotten her voice back as it was the payment. Ariel brings up that she would never see her family again but she would also never be able to sing again; which was something she enjoyed doing. she was really giving up a lot because she felt she was in love
It's been stated that the film is about a father learning to give up his daughter as she grows up, and I think it was amazing that it was Triton who let Ariel become a human.

The Little Mermaid is my absolute favorite. I just watched it again recently. I love the small details that add to the characters. For example, in the scene where Ariel and Flounder are being chased by the shark in the beginning, pay attention to the bag and how they want you to notice it. When Ariel's life is in danger, she risks being eaten by the shark to get the bag. But then she is quick to drop the bag in order to save her friend. Showing that Ariel values her friendships over the human things she risked her own life for. Which is Ariel's core value - Friendship.
I remember Eric being the first Disney prince that I actually liked because, compared to the ones in Sleeping Beauty and Snow White, he has an actual developed personality. He is genuinely charming and a nice person, fun as well as funny with hobbies and goals.
I also that he wasn’t all prince like (can tell the look of his face how he hated that statue knowing that is not how he is in real life) and he looked like a person you want to hang with
@@Theaterg15Eric, Charming and Aladdin - the princes (one becoming such through marriage) who would be your “I’m better off being me than a title” sorts. And I say that about Charming because of how he also clearly had his “attitudes” towards being royalty, and then the third movie made him even better by having him talk to the mice and fling himself out the window when forbidden from leaving.
We hardly knew the prince from Snow White (what was his real name again?) and Phillip was basically the sort of “fairy tale prince” that seems more generic.
@@tranatkikomi6873 Honestly I think Phillip had more personality than Charming in the first Cinderella. If only cause he had more screentime to show his personality lol. (I did a quick google and apparently Charming only had like 4 minutes on screen, vs Phillip who had like 12.)
Like, what did Charming do in Cinderella 1? He yawned out of very understandable boredom, fell in love, and got married.
Phillip rode around the woods on his horse, fell into a pond, got robbed by animals, fell in love, actually talked on-screen to his love, got himself a second date, was stood up and kidnapped on said second date, was faced with a lifetime in jail, escaped and killed a horde of goblins and a dragon with the help of the 3 fairies, broke a curse, and finally got that second date.
And I'm sure Phillip would have shown a lot more personality too if his movie got sequels.
This movie was one of many fine examples of old-school Disney animation. This movie came out in the late 80s, like 1989, to be precise. Back when CGI animation was still in its infancy so most of everything here had to be done by hand. Honestly, it's a fine masterpiece that has been beloved by many from the 90s and so on.
FYI for you animation buffs: This was the last Disney animated film to be fully hand-colored using traditional cels. The very last shot of the of the wedding ship in the film was a test for the studio's then-new CAPS (Computer Animation Production System) software that allowed them to do the coloring digitally, greaty speeding up the process. The CAPS system, by the way, was developed for Disney by Pixar, when Pixar was still a sturggling independent studio of its own.
I can't imagine the skill and dedication it must take to draw hundreds of thousands of those bubbles which lend such authenticity to the depictions of life under the sea. That's just one example of the attention to detail by the artists. There are so many little things that enhance the visual experience.

Fun fact: Ariel marked the end of a 30 year long run at Disney with no princess stories. From Sleeping Beauty to the Little Mermaid, Disney took a long break from fairy tales.
I really do love the scene when Ariel finds out Eric is going to marry Vanessa.
No vocal performance to go on, it’s all up to the animators to capture the acting for that scene and they create so much emotion and heartbreak in just a few seconds!

@White Noise Reacts This movie is the first movie in the Disney Renaissance this movie is not only the first movie in the Disney Renaissance but it was the movie that essentially helped save Disney. Originally the studio was going to stop making animated movies because after the death of Walt Disney the studio was struggling to find it's footing and to find it's identity.
You have to admire Jodi Benson's singing voice. She could sing numbers from the phonebook, and you'd be intrigued.
Pat Carroll, who voiced Ursula, asked lyricist Howard Ashman to sing Poor Unfortunate Souls as he heard it. Her performance in the film is her recreation of it, including all the little ad libs.

Ariel is my all time favorite princess. This movie came out when I was 2 so perfect timing for when toddlers want to watch movies over and over again 😂. This movie is also awesome because Howard Ashman and Alan Menken wrote the songs and they also wrote the songs for Little Shop of Horrors, which is polar opposite of a Disney movie.

I’m not sure if it’s been addressed already, but the reason Eric didn’t recognize Ariel completely and got her confused with Vanessa (Ursula’s human form) is because when she saved him and sang to him, the sun was shining behind her. When he opens his eyes, still groggy from almost drowning, he sees Ariel but from a lighting perspective her hair and makeup is darker because there is light behind her, not on her. This is why Vanessa’s dark features (along with her voice and hypnotism) make sense to Eric.
This is what i consider the beginning of some of the best Disney films with storytelling, animation and music. I was obsessed with this film as kid when it came out. I was only 10 years old and saved up my allowance to buy the VHS when it came out. I am surprised i didnt wear out the tape. I still have this film memorized.

I love this movie, but it's definitely softer than the original Hans Christian Anderson fairytale, where the Prince marries another woman, and the Mermaid has to kill him to turn back into a mermaid. She opts not to, and turns into sea foam.

Yeah the original story just hits different. Especially as you become older (like me) and can appreciate Andersen’s beautiful yet depressive writing 🤌🏼

Something closer to the original tragic ending can be seen in the "Little Mermaid" ballet sequence of the movie *Hans Christian Andersen* (1952) starring Danny Kaye.
@@whitenoisereacts It took me months to see it when it first came out because I knew they would "Disneyfied" the ending. Her sacrifice in the original was so wonderful I did not want it to be ruin.
The first animated Disney movie to have a CGI sequence in it was The Great Mouse Detective. You should watch it sometime soon!

The Black Cauldron the year before was the first animated Disney movie with CGI, actually (Tron in 1982 was the first one Disney did but that's not animated). But The Great Mouse Detective is the better movie to watch and yes, it is super underrated, so maybe I shouldn't say anything.

There’s something very special about this movie, the story, animation, music… is so magical. The original tale is very sad and I think they were able to bring some of the melancholy to this. Is about not belonging and wanting to be loved. Very powerful.
Ps- her dancing skills are actually from the original story! Ariel is more agile and elegant than any human so her dancing is amazing. And even tho it hurts like a thousand knives to use her human legs, she dances for the Prince every day.
There were 2 sequels to this and the third explains Triton’s hatred of humans. While his actions in destroying Ariel’s collection was harsh, you understand why he did it. Triton, sacrificing himself for Ariel despite what she did, makes him one of the best Disney parents for me.
Fun fact- the voice of Flotsam and Jetsam was the same actress who voiced Gozer in Ghostbusters!
Paddi Edwards was her name, she also was the voice of one of the Fates (The one who see’s the Future) who said _"Indoor Plumbing. It’s gonna be Big."_ from _Hercules_

I had a roommate with long red hair who (of course) loved this film, and if we ever went swimming, you could guarantee at least once she'd do one of those dramatic Ariel splash moments (like when she comes up on the rock and the water goes flying everywhere and she tosses her hair back).
You really wanted to make sure you weren't right near her or you might get slapped in the face with wet hair, lol.
What I think (or hope) is a cute story about dinglehoppers:
Back in 2018 when we were in Disney World, my mom got a heinous sinus infection that also made her COMPLETELY lose her voice. She could barely even whisper. As a result, I started ordering for her at restaurants and basically acting as her interpreter.
Her favorite restaurant in all of WDW is Teppan Edo, the hibachi place in the Japan pavilion. There's four grills per room, and when multiple tables are having their meals prepared it gets LOUD. There was no hope of my mom being able to order for herself, so I ordered for her when the server asked her what she'd like to drink.
When the server looked at me a little funny for answering for my mom, I explained that she had been sick and lost her voice so she couldn't speak loudly enough to be heard. The server said she was so sorry to hear she had been sick, and left to get our drinks.
Teppan Edo doesn't have silverware set at the tables - they ask if you'd like a fork or chopsticks before the chef comes out to cook.
When the server brought our drinks she placed a fork in front of my mom, followed by "Get it???" :D
We didn't fully understand until after the meal when she brought the check. I opened the little book thing to find an origami version of Ariel's pink dress, and when I flipped it over we saw that the server had written on the back: _"I hope you get your voice back from Ursula soon!"_
It was a _dinglehopper._ She brought the fork to my mom as a dinglehopper.
My mom still has that little origami dress sitting on her bedroom dresser.😊
Sharing your experience seeing "The Little Mermaid" for the first time was so fun! I truly enjoyed watching you let out your inner child. It's such a sweet movie. Super fun, guys!
Sorry I’m late posting this comment, but here is everything I have to share about the film:
1. Some facts about Little Mermaid when it came out this was when People knew Disney was back on the animation map as while their two previous animated films Great Mouse Detective and Oliver and Company were both well received with critics and box office numbers it wasn’t anything spectacular then this came out and not only did Disney film finally beat out Don Bluth who was competing with them by releasing his films the same time as Disneys with An American Tail being released around the same time as Great Mouse and Land Before Time the same time as Oliver and Company. He released All Dogs Go to Heaven and was blown out of the water by this one,
2. At the time this film had the most sound effects of any film,
3. This film won two Oscars for Best Original Song for Under the Sea and for Best Original Score which made it the first Disney film since Bedknobs and Broomsticks to win an Oscar and the first animated Disney film to be nominated for an Oscar since The Rescuers,
4. Howard Ashman besides working on the songs with Alan Menken also helped with the story such as originally Sebastian was originally supposed to be an English Butler crab named Clarence, but changed to a Trinidadian as well as the name and as a result the whole musical tone also shifted to match that although commonly confused as being Jamaican, Sebastian is actually Trinidadian. Samuel E. Wright confirmed that was in fact the accent he used while voicing by the character.
5. Part of Your World" was nearly cut; Jeffrey Katzenberg felt that it was "boring," as well as being too far over the heads of the children for whom it was intended. At a test screening children were restless during the song which did not have finished animation - in particular one child that sat in front of Katzenberg and spilled his popcorn and was more interested in picking it up than watching the sequence. John Musker, Ron Clements, and Howard Ashman all pleaded their case and begged Katzenberg to let the song stay to no avail. Ultimately, the one who managed to convince him to give it a second chance was the animator of the sequence, Glen Keane. Another screening was set up, this time with an adult audience. It was a greater success (even reportedly moving some members to tears) and so the song was left in the film. Katzenberg later said that he was happy no one listened to him because he couldn't imagine the film without the song.
6. The voice of Grimsby is Ben Wright who was in a previous Disney film as Roger in 101 Dalmatians and while not Disney people will also know him as the lead Nazi Herr Zeller in The Sound of Music and this was his last film released after his death and Disney folks had no idea that he had been the voices of Roger in One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961) and Rama in The Jungle Book (1967). He had to tell them.
7. Similar to Beauty and the Beast during Walt’s life The Little Mermaid had been a Disney property since 1941. Walt Disney planned to include the much darker Hans Christian Andersen version of the tale in a planned anthology film of the fantasy author's works. After a bitter strike by the animators that same year and the increasing focus on World War 2 wartime propaganda shorts, the initial version of The Little Mermaid was shelved in 1943
8. Ariel is the first Disney princess to have biological siblings and Ariel is purposely made to stand out from her sisters. Firstly, she's the only redhead and the only one who wears her hair down. Secondly, she's the only mermaid whose seashell top isn't the same color as her tail. Finally, although all of Triton's daughters have names that begin with the letter 'A', Ariel's is the only one whose name doesn't also end with that letter and she was made a redhead to distinguish her from Darryl Hannah’s live action mermaid in an earlier Disney Touchstone film with Tom Hanks called Splash,
9. One neat easter egg is when in the concert audience in the beginning and Triton is going down in his chariot if you look closely not only can you see Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy in the audience, but also Kermit the Frog and I know you haven’t seen the Muppet films yet so I would recommend them and go in release order they are hot connected, but it is a nice progression,
10. The film was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker who also did The Great Mouse Detective, Aladdin, Hercules, Treasure Planet,
Princess and the Frog, and Moana,
11. Jodi Benson "Part of Your World" in the dark to get that 'under the sea' feeling.
12. This film was the last to use all hand painted cels for the animation as Disney's next film, The Rescuers Down Under (which is a sequel to a film from the 70’s they did called The Rescuers) used a digital method of coloring and combining scanned drawings developed for Disney by Pixar called CAPS/ink & paint (Computer Animation Production System), which would eliminate the need for cels, the multiplane camera, and many of the optical effects used for the last time in The Little Mermaid.
13. Before recording "Poor Unfortunate Souls," Pat Carroll asked Howard Ashman to sing the song one more time to get it right. He happily obliged. According to Carroll, he "put on the cloak" and she admits to stealing his body language and two or three adlibs from him ("Pathetic," "Idn't it," "You can't get something for nothing," and "No more talking, singing, zip-pah.")
14. The character of Ursula was based on drag performer and John Waters regular Divine. Her personality and some of her actions were also largely inspired by a previous Disney villain, Madame Medusa from Disney's The Rescuers.
15. The animators created the character of Ursula for Bea Arthur, who declined as she was occupied with The Golden Girls. Jennifer Saunders then auditioned for the role of Ursula but was turned down. Somehow in 2002, Steven Spielberg got hold of her tape and insisted to the three directors of Shrek 2 that she be cast as the scheming Fairy Godmother. After Bea Arthur turned down the chance to voice Ursula, Nancy Marchand, Sylvia Sidney, Nancy Wilson, Roseanne Barr, Coral Browne, Charlotte Rae and Elaine Stritch were all then considered with the latter eventually being cast in the part; however, Stritch's style clashed with that of lyricist Howard Ashman so Pat Carroll got the part
16. The dress Ariel wears during her dinner with Eric is actually a combination of different dresses worn by every Disney princess prior to her. The puffy sleeves with the diamond designs are similar to the sleeves on Snow White's iconic dress. The light pink color comes from Cinderella's mother's dress (the one the stepsisters rip apart). The full skirt and draping are from Cinderella's famous ball gown. Finally, the off-the-shoulder neckline and long, pointed sleeves were inspired by Princess Aurora's royal ball gown.
17. Scheduling conflicts with Star Trek: The Next Generation forced Patrick Stewart to turn down the role of King Triton.
18. Sebastian's fanfare was performed by composer Alan Menken on a kazoo.
19. The shot of Ariel reaching out through the skylight of her grotto at the end of "Part of Your World" was the last shot to be completed. It took four tries to get the optical effects just right.
20. Ariel is the first Disney animated heroine to have a bare midriff, as well as the first to display cleavage.
21. In Greek mythology, Triton is the son of Poseidon. Poseidon is the brother of Zeus. Zeus had a son named Heracles, who is the main hero of Hercules. This makes Disney heroes Ariel and Hercules first cousins once removed.
22. When The Little Mermaid earned four Golden Globe nominations in 1990, it not only became the first full-length animated feature film to be nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, but it also became the first animated feature to be nominated for a Best Picture Golden Globe Award, of any genre, in general. Even though it did not win, Disney's Beauty and the Beast would later on to become the first animated feature film to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), two years later.
23. Both Jim Carrey and Matthew Broderick auditioned for the role of Prince Eric, but Christopher Daniel Barnes who ended up voicing him was only 16 years old when he recorded his voice for Prince Eric the producers felt his voice sounded much older than he really was.

I never understood All Dogs Go To Heaven, I remember watching the movie when I was little in my room, thinking it was going to be a Disney Movie. Some scenes scared me.
Be glad they updated her age even a little bit for modern sensibilities -- in the original Hans Christian Andersen tale, she was 14! Also, spoiler alert, she doesn't marry the prince in the end. She does get to live with the fairies after casting herself into the sea and turning into foam, so it's a bittersweet ending.
Well it’s very different if she doesn’t marry him, also, that how young people were married. They lived much shorter lives

The book version of this tale was super dark. I like Disney's take on this, like Ariel having weak knees and feet since she isn't used to gravity outside of water instead of the book's version of "every step was like treading on broken glass".

It's so wild how Ariel may be the film's protagonist, but the story ultimately is about and hinges upon Triton. He's the character who goes through the most fundamental and dramatic growth. From starting the film as a...well...kind of arrogant, aggrandising ruler -- he has his daughters put on a show singing about how great he is! -- who only sees it as "I'm right. It's my way or the high way." It makes him blind to the actual feelings and potential suffering of his children; Ariel has interests and he doesn't care until it gets in the way of the family image he presents, and then he destroys everything she's collected in a moment that, for her as a teenager, is traumatic enough to make her vulnerable to the manipulation of Ursula. Through the film the loss of Ariel forces him to realize that he was wrong and his behaviour needs to change. Hence at the end we get him sacrificing himself (and, as a result, his kingdom/position as king/power) for his daughter to then, finally, let her go and live her life. It's just such a beautiful story of a father learning to basically be a better and more empathetic parent.
@jf k Correct, but the lyrics are still “we are the daughters of Triton / great father who loves us and named us well” - it’s a correlation of Triton’s greatness via his progeny who are singing for HIS birthday event. It’s all meant to reinforce Triton’s own greatness.
@jf k ...I'm not discussing that, though? I'm struggling to find your point. Analysing the content, placement, and use of 'Daughters of Triton' within the film makes it pretty clear that it serves multiple purposes, and one of them being setting up Triton as a character -- especially as he is the one with the most (arguably, the only) dynamic growth arc within the entirety of the film. His daughters are introduced by name...and nothing else; in the context of the song and the story thus far, his daughters are more like trophies/accessories than anything else. An argument can be made that the song is cut off due to Ariel's absence, therefore we are not privy to its contents, but that doesn't change the fact that Ariel's debut was for the purpose of Triton's birthday celebration. This entire performance and everything else was about HIM and HIS day and HIS rule. Yes, he is a ruler...but I'm talking about him as a father and a person, not as a king -- he can be a great king for all I know (the script doesn't show us), but it's pretty clear that he has an issue with self-involvement and self-aggrandization that needs to shift towards humility and empathy. That song functions as a set-up for that journey.
This is a classic. Ursula really kicked off the era with some of the best villains in disney (and best villain songs). I think the reason why she got Ariel to sign was because she was blunt about the price of the contract, she didn't hold back on basically saying that this is a deal with the devil sort of thing. Fun fact: with Ursula's design, she was based off the Drag Queen Divine's looks.
As for movie suggestions, if you want to stick with disney classics, I suggest Hunchback of Notre Dame (great score, songs and animation) and Hercules (if you liked Ursula as a villain, you'll love Hades).
For non disney movies, some underrated Dreamworks movie like Prince of Egypt, Road to El Dorado and Spirit Stallion of Cimarron are great (especially in terms of animation, songs and storytelling)
"Is it bad that I kinda just want a naval movie?" I mean... Master and Commander is an AMAZING film that would probably be worthwhile to check out.

This is my favorite Disney movie. I love that it's the one who started a Renaissance of the Animation Studios, the best era of Disney with wonderful Classics that are amongst the best and most iconic, popular and loved. Most of the plot ideas, topics and stories in The Little Mermaid inspired most of the latter movies like Beauty and The Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Hercules, Mulan or Tarzan... So Ariel walked so the rest of them could run. 😂
I loved how genuine your reaction was! As someone who grew up as The Little Mermaid came out then Beauty and the Beast, then Aladdin then The Lion King then Pocahontas etc. it is so great to see your first reaction to theses classics.
As a young teen when this came out, it remains my favorite and Ariel is my princess of choice. The age thing never bothered me, it was really relatable to the story and her reactions ("but daddy I love him!" having never had a conversation with the man lol). The lighting and underwater movement were so stunning. Only one better imo is The Secret of NIMH with the amazing inner glows and sparkle animations. Loved your guys' reaction!
TLM is my favorite of the Disney classics, and Ariel is my favorite Disney Princess (followed by Jasmine). Fun fact, her hair was originally going to be blonde, but they decided to go with a different color since it was too similar to the mermaid from Splash, who was also blonde, and they settled on red since it complimented her tail. Second fun fact, TLM basically saved Disney animation studios from bankruptcy and kicked off the Disney Renaissance era. Also, Ariel is the only Disney Princess to have a child (Melody), who stares in the sequel.
For some lore, Ursula was originally going to be Triton's sister who tried to steal the throne out of jealousy, and was banished as a result. This idea was dropped (still present in the play) and instead the prequel TV series reveals that she, her mother, and her sister (villain of the sequel), were once palace residents who later tried to take over the kingdom following a war between the merfolk and the Cecaelia/Octopans (Ursula's race) where the merfolk won. As for Ariel's mother, she was killed at the beginning of the 3rd movie (which is a prequel) by humans, hence the reason for her father's hatred of them. Another fun fact, there was a deleted scene where when Flounder is helping Ariel get to the ship to stop the wedding, he has to face off against the shark from the beginning. Oh, and merfolk can understand sea life language, but humans can't.

In "ariels beginning " (sequel/prequel movie) it explains that ariels mom was killed by a human ship (he assumed they were fishermen but it was about the size of prince arics ship). This has also made alot of fan theorys about ariels mom being in neverland and the ship was captain hooks .cause we saw several red headed mermaids and ariel got her mothers hair (which was just another in a long list of reasons triton was over protective). another theorys (i haven't checked) is that ursala is tritons older sister and he took the thrown from her
Im baaaack! Used to love this movie as a kid, so, as usual, thank you all for the fun reactions! And, of course, I’m here with another recommendation. Now this one is a bit different, because it’s a League of Legends music video! It’s called ‘Everything Goes On’ by Porter Robinson, and oh my GOD the animation is beyond gorgeous! Also, you guys might need to bring some tissues for this one, because there’s a high chance you’ll start crying. The video has a beautiful message to go along with the beautiful music and visuals! I like how, right before Ursula shows up on land and casts her spell on Eric, when he throws the recorder(?) away, it hits a couple notes in the wind that sounds like it's saying "uh oh"- such a subtle thing that I don't see mentioned much, but it's just a nice touch.

To me it would've been interesting if Ariel's sisters had been given a greater role in the movie, particularly if they had learned of Ariel's actions and made an attempt to communicate and aid her in some fashion when she needed help.
It would be interesting to see Ariel’s sisters in loving relationships with mermen. Hopefully Triton will be more accepting of the Mermen his other daughters marry than he was of Eric (the human) with Ariel.
If you back to the scene where Ariel rescued Eric, through his semi-conscious vision, her hair actually looked the same colour as Vanessa’s, not red like Ariel’s.
Ursula is actually Triton’s sister and they are the children of Poseidon. Their father gave them gifts, Ursula got the shell necklace that is around her neck and Triton got the Trident.
This was the last painted on cels, still they used CGI for certain things, and yes, the ship in the beginning was made in CGI; what they used to do back then ( as they did with the great mouse detective and Oliver and company), they used to print each and single frame of the 3D animation, and they transferred each frame on a sheet of celluloide which was shot under a camera with the backgrounds and characters ( if the scene required characters). So the 3D elements were in the cels like if they were traditionally done, but not drawn by a human being, they were actually generated by the 3D program. That’s why the 3d elements used to be flat colored with no textures, because they were transferred on cels and painted on the back in a traditional fashion.
Ursula is a Cecaelia, which are half-human, half-octopus. In the film, she was once a resident in the palace, possibly a royal magician of sorts until King Triton caught her using black magic and banished her. However, in the current license version of the stage musical and based on the deleted storyline for her, Ursula is the youngest of seven daughters. Her father was the sea god Poseidon, and she was always envious as he doted on the other daughters but not her. To ease his guilt being an awful father to her, he gifted her a magic nautical shell. Ursula started using black magic with it to kill off her sisters to become the favorite. However when that failed, she committed patricide, the act of killing ones’ own father; she then became the ruler of the entire ocean. However she had a younger sibling, King Triton. When he came of age he took back rule of the seas, the crown, and the trident. Then he banished her, and she swore revenge. It’s revealed the final confrontation that Ursula was responsible for the death of Ariel‘s mother. King Triton never knew because he assumes that humans are killed her because she went for a swim one day and never came back. Ariel to defeated her aunt by smashing her shell which acted as a life force to her.

A couple fun facts:
When they were coming up with designs for Ariel they were going to make her blonde, but during production another mermaid movie came out called “Splash” featuring a blonde mermaid. To avoid being redundant they changed it to her now iconic red hair.
For Ursula, they were playing with some concepts about her being King Trident’s sister who was banished from Atlantica. The idea was eventually scrapped for the movie, but it did end up getting used for the live Broadway musical.
Ariel will always be my favorite Disney princess, no matter how much hate she gets! She is talented, beautiful, and I love her sassy personality.😁 Its crazy to think part of your world was almost omitted from the movie, its like the best part. If you notice, TLM is the blueprint for the movies that came after it 👀

Just found you guys! I'm dating myself here, but this was the first movie I ever saw in a theater. It had a huge impact. I have a friend who was obsessed with mermaids for a bit after this and at one point I bought a shell pendant like the one in the movie. The movies after it were great too, but after the mid 90s I aged out of them and so I haven't seen many of them. I'm trying to catch up now that I have kids, though. I do think that the animation was fantastic during the Disney Renaissance and it still holds up today (though I am far from an expert).
This video showed up in my recommended and what introduced me to this channel. Hearing insight/commentary about the different possible animation techniques is super interesting and I definitely hope to see more in the future.
I must say, though: the hair flip after Ariel initially surfaces as a human is arguably one of the best shots in the entire film. I was really hoping to hear what you both had to say about it. ;-;
Also: You're absolutely right about Ursula's song speeding up. She would have made a great lawyer; it's a common cross tactic to overwhelm people with information so they can't think and simply respond/act out of instinct.

On a technical level, with the ship moving in the beginning, I do know in the 80s Disney started using computer modeling to aid in animation. The Great Mouse Detective and the gears of Big Ben are the often-cited example. Basically, they would model the frames/elements needed in a computer program and then trace over the model. The blocky way the ship looks might suggest something similar happened there.
This was Disney's last fully hand drawn cell animated picture. There was also an under water live action model for Ariel and in the original fairytale the prince marries someone else and the mermaid dies in the end. And yes it was the same voice actress for Vanessa and Ariel (Jodi Benson), who also portrayed barbie in the toy story movies. As for suggestions, I would say Pocahontas because of the superb animation, cast, and story. For sequels, the lion king sequels are the best in my opinion, but Cinderella 3 is good too even though the 50s one for me is superior, many like it more than the original.
The sequels for Ariel are pretty good too. The third one helps show Triton’s hatred for humans and a reasonable hate

I really like the villain Ursula. The original Danish story is sadder. Every time Hans Christian Andersen ‘s mermaid walks with her human feet it feels like stepping on broken glass. She also dies, becoming sea foam.
Tom Hanks and the lovely Daryl Hannah starred in a modern day comedy version called Splash (1984). Tom’s family owns a fruit and vegetable wholesale company in NY City. The late John Candy played his brother.

You forgot Pocahontas, and Moana. I think Anna and Elsa are honorary princesses because both end up becoming queen. Elsa becomes queen of Arendelle in Frozen when their parents die and she gets her coronation day. Anna becomes queen of Arendelle at the end of Frozen 2 when Elsa decides to give up her throne of being queen of Arendelle and gives it to her sister Anna because she wants to be queen of the enchanted forest.

42:10 - agree with your assessment. If Ariel was older, the story would not work and Triton would look like a "bad guy" instead of understandably overprotective father. I also like that Ariel does screws up in the end and it takes Eric to fix her mistake and save everyone, so the movie doesn't show teenager rebellion being successful and good.
