Your lessons are the most effective than any other guitar teaching channel I know. Seriously, my guitar skills have improved since I started following your lessons and applying them. You teach the most important things and break them down into details. Thank you very much sir, much respect to you and hope this channel grows more.
But do you think picking hard is really important ? For example you can volume up your amp and second you can use light strings. Picking hard on some gauges doesnt preffer your sound so much. So i guess there is not one solution to get your picking right. Just an Idea...
@keinstein3714 Picking hard has nothing to do with volume, it's more about articulation so you feel the notes in your left hand, which helps with your hand being more in sync. which makes your rhythm tighter
@@keinstein3714 i think youre right. you also see this in that there are great players with an aggressive pick attack and others who are much more gentle. it isnt one size fits all
Your vids are top-notch. Do you think a lesson about playing standing up vs. sitting would be a good idea? I'd love to know your take on that. I don't ever practice standing and I should
Your spot on with your pick angle and attack. Rick Beato interviewed Kiko Loureiro of Megadeth and he has some interesting thoughts on the pick angle. It's during the 10:00 to 11:00 mark: ruclips.net/video/LCD2gN86U7k/видео.html
Okay dude I just have to say this. I've been going back to basics and reexamining how I pick and so on. I've been struggling with angles and my pick-holding fingers touching the strings. I had never seen anyone ever specifically explain what part of the pick is supposed to touch the strings, both up and down stroke wise. This simple explanation and demonstration helped me to finally understand not only the pick attack, but also the pick angle. I literally IMMEDIATELY feel like my picking is better than it has ever been, and my picking speed and comfort jumped up dramatically. It is worth noting that I have pretty bad ADHD , and therefore, a rather harsh inability to exercise self awareness. Points like this give me concrete things to look at that even I can comprehend. I have been playing for almost 20 years, self taught. The lack of self awareness, and a teacher that could possibly make things make sense to me, has stumped my growth. But this video was a godsend for my technique. Muchos gracias, Sensei Shred.
My son is very good at the flutter picking. I've been playing 61 years, and have been using Dunlop Silver or Golds, and only the shoulders. Those points just get in the way. I am not a flutter picker, but I DO like to blur!
I have always been told to play with as little effort as possible, I think as a side effect i started playing really lightly which may have been holding me back.
You keep saying edge of pick, but keep pointing at the tip. Also, you said to use one edge for downstroke and the other for the upstroke. Do we flip the pick?
Anyone know which pick he's using? I just went to a triangle (346 shape), and I'm 1000 times more comfortable and have more control. Is this what he's using?
Hi Mike new player here um 58 haven't had a guitar in 40 years after 5 weeks um trying to learn the fretboard but I have some conflicting information on pick grip i have tried both ways your way which seems to be the most common way and then there is the tom hess way I have found they both work, for me anyway. But as a beginner is this a bad idea to keep switching back and fourth 🤔 until I find my best grip I have never dropped a pick either way,but I wish you and Tom could have a podcast or video on why you guys prefer one to the other ,both you guys have very good insight on the instrument and it would maybe be the the whole communitys benefit to get you and toms reasons why one might be better than the other ,thanks for all your work over the years providing 👍 great free videos to help guitarist on there journey 👍 😀 😉 😊
I’m completely confused on the very first point, how can you hit a totally different edge of the pick on a downstroke vs upstroke? I understand how you’d hit different SIDES of the pick, I don’t understand how you’d hit a different edge…
@@elninobrown They are unbelievable! one of my best purchases for guitar! I used a sandpaper/ nail file on its edges to fit it even more better to my playing. And its super super comfortable now

Wait lemme get this straight, so when it comes to pick attack, should i pick harder or faster? When i pick harder it's kinda be more exhausting.
I picked this up in one of your previous videos, this was a game changer for me ❤️ picking with purpose also helps with string changes

Hey man I'm curious I've seen you use that ibanez literally your entire career. What model and pups does it have? Looks like a workhorse
Having played purely unplugged for weeks and then having to set amp volume at the lowest up until now meant this was never a problem for me

Anyone know what model of Ibanez Mike is using? Love the look.
What’s the neurological phenomenon that’s occurring to cause sync to improve when you dig in with your right hand?

Thanks Mike, this is very prrecise teaching and motivating me to put it into my practice...I know its going to fill a big gap in my approach.
Great advice. I like to watch this videos often to keep my practice on track.
Paul Gilbewrt when asked always said he picks lightly, i'm going nuts
Mike's advise here is wrong, Paul himself said his speed levels increased when he learned to pick lightly. Strong ass picking like this is bs
Indeed. I give blatantly wrong advice every other vid, just to keep y'all on your toes.

I have the exact same guitar as you 😁

Hey Mike, awesome lesson as always. Just wanted to know what model Ibanez that is. CHEERS!
that explains why i have always has problems strumming with a pick.
Thank you so much for the tip!! Keep Rocking!!
You're the guy who synched my hands ! Not much to add but that means so much for me !
solid advices. thank you sir

how 2 pinch harmonic…
Fantastic teaching!
Which strings are you using? And what gauge??
If I remember correctly, he uses a standard set of 9-46 gauge.
We’re all such guitar nerds, aren’t we? Lol.
Flow picks?
Yes he uses Flow picks. I’ve been wanting to try them.
