I did a bit of research and General Keyaerts was responsible for guarding the Ardennes, an extensive area of rolling hills and forests. While I wouldn’t necessarily call them mountains by any means, they do contain some steep cliffs and whatnot.
Oof, he probably thought that this was a cushy enough job, after all who would dare to invade through the Ardennes? They certainly wouldnt try it with tanks...
So he was…oh, you know, only responsible for guarding the *most famous area in all of the Battle of France* as his command. So we can either cast a lot of blame on him for the fall of France or we can feel really bad for him that nobody thought the Germans would go through the Ardennes. I may look into him myself now, good research!

Just a quick note regarding "mountaineers" in Belgium. The Chasseurs des Ardennes were mountain/hill-trained light infantry based in the Ardennes (in Hainaut).
There was a decision called 'Revise the Treaty of London' which should have given you cores over all the Benelux, did you not see it or something? Edit: I know because I saw it in the decision menu.
Omg Alex, I've been following you gor 4 years or longer now, I don't really remember. I love your video's and watch all of them. I am from Belgium so that's why I am so excited to leave a comment. Ps maybe one day you'll have a multi-player game with Bittersteel, to show who's boss!
Vanilla Belgium is actually quite fun to play. By going brown you can conquer Lux and NL early on, form Leo Belgicus and have a relatively decent industry. Complemented by all the manpower you get from Congo and Indonesia you can build a good enough army to face the germans or attack the Allies... A timely switch back to democracy makes the country a pretty fun nation to form EU as
I've tried this mod, you can unify the Low Countries through the interventionist sub tree, then just spam forts across the length of the border. After achieving unification you have to clear the great depression and then after picking up the first army focus just go down the industry tree to get enough factories to finish the fort line. Bit cheesy but it works
I finally realized something after watching Bitt3rsteel play this mod. Alex and Bitt3r are opposites who bolster each other's popularity. We love Alex for his consistent incompetence and failures, and we love watching Bitt3r then correctly do whatever it was Alex borked.
I think the British AI is hard coded to sit in Dunkirk so France will fall and the Dunkirk encirclement will happen as in real life, same thing happened when I play France
"Why does everything sound like an innuendo?!" There are hundred of ways you could've made that statement, but you chose "...come in me"; not too many other ways to take that statement, Alex. It was hilarious, nonetheless.
Yeah, unfortunately with historical ai on, the ai is unfortunately, well, railroaded if you can believe it, but in a pretty dumb way. In 39 and 40, France and Britain basically *try* to lose France. And by 43-44, Germany is practically *trying* to lose the east and normandy. Like, it’s infuriating watching the french ai refuse to do anything if you as a democratic europe minor are actually doing alright against Germany, because the ai just ceases function until it capitulates because “that’s what it’s meant to do.”
The AI is just atrocious in this game. Like I get the desire for "historically accurate gameplay", but all it really does is force the AI to be stupid on one front or another. Takes the enjoyment out of a hard fought victory for me.
Idk if you in particular played the Rt56 Belgium tree but i feel like Leon de Grill is a bit of a cult classic meme in HOI4 youtube land, or at least it used to be a few years ago.
You've gotta play Executor redux. Its the star wars mod and it got a huge update. Both the Empire and the Rebel alliance are playable and they have huge focus trees. 10/10
Your lines break again and again since You repeat the same mistake. Your line has the weakest point near Eindhoven. The enemy line forms a bow around the river Rhein there. And the game mechanics is the way that this provides them an encirclement bonus against you there since they can attack from three provinces or more. The line was more stable if You draw it from Holland southward, using the Ijseelzee as defense. There would be a maximum of two possible attack provinces. And You would use the fortification there. By the way: fortifications are absolutely required if You play the defense card. And You have none of them.
I don't blame ya alex. You did nearly everything right in setting up a defensive line against Germany. You had more org, peircing, soft attack, and defence than they did. Most of the enemy units attacking had very little org and were half strength. Honestly I don't know why the game does stuff like that. Half the time the numbers say one thing but pdx's programming does another. 🤷🏿♂️
I genuinely don't know why Alex lost that fight either. 1000 defense and it's not even a speed bump. My only guess is that it has to be organization. Someone please explain why this doesn't work?
I played vanilla Belgium and had 1200 defense and they still broke trough because of the CAS and just because they were attacking non stop so divisions didn't regain their org
@@thetautvyduxs5242 but how does one mitigate organization damage without just increasing your own? You'd think with such a high defense that would negate it.
Air force was dealing like 4 ground attack which is pretty irrelevant Is just Org damage that causes a lot of reinforce memeing (is a thing that is happeneing since BBA)
Bro even pdx doesn't fully understand their own mechanics. Half the time the numbers will say one thing, but the game will do its own thing anyways in spite of that.
It's likely that his org just kept decreasing. Doesn't matter how high your stats are if the organization doesn't hold out. Again though half the time it doesn't even work as intended as I've had occasions were my organization was near full with high defense, but the enemy would still bulldoze through me as if I was fighting with a butter knife.
In Vanilla, I end up building my own Maginot line and I abandon Eupen-Malmedy. There are too many ways for Germany to attack it, so holding it become impossible. These days, I also have issues holding some of Flanders too...
