Great reaction thanks. This song quite possibly saved my life. It gave hope where there was only hopelessness. I love this band and most especially Roger Hodgson. Roger left Supertramp at the peak of their fame to be at home as a parent to his children. If you get the opportunity to see him live do it. I saw him right before the pandemic and he has not lost anything in his vocal abilities. "Why must we be so cool, oh so cool. Oh , we're such damn fools"
A gross oversimplification about Supertramp might be: Roger Hodgson tends to be soul-searching, spiritually optimistic - in an almost child-like way - in his compositions; and his voice is very much like that with his high tenor. Rick Davies tends to be hard-lined and pragmatic in his world-view; his voice, very much like that as it's deeper, earthier, and it sounds like he knows how to sing a complaint. Each writer tends to sing his own respective compositional contribution (much like the Beatles). The remaining three are world-class musicians, highly intelligent, who always know the precise thing to bring to a song. I generally describe Supertramp as sublimely perfect "proper geometry"... while it lasted. In the end, Roger's and Rick's polarity would split that perfection and Roger left in 1983, ending the halcyon period of the band.
Apparently, Rick's wife had much to do with Roger's leaving. Rick & wife considered themselves the band's managers, and their decision making was increasingly antipathic to Roger.
I saw Roger's final show with Supertramp, at the Montreal Forum. They had hired a number of extra musicians and back-up singers, and most of them had nothing to do for so much of the time, that the show turned out boring. Too many stiff bodies standing lifelessly about. Interestingly, the band hired U.S. multi-instrumentalist and hi-range vocalist Mark Hart to replace Hodgson. Too bad the new music was no good. By the late 80s, Mark Hart had joined the great Crowded House, recording and touring with them on many of their best albums. Hart is super-talented.
@@OronOfMontreal That's what Supertramp and Pink Floyd have in common: When Roger leaves the best times are over ;-) Great to see young musicians listening really attentive to Zappa (that's how i came here) and lots of other classics from former decades. Great job - go ahead! :-)
Did you notice the theremin used in the song? (The singing saw so to speak) Rick Davies - lead & backing vocals, Pianos, organs, moog *Roger Hodgson - lead & backing vocals, guitars, pianos John Anthony Helliwell - saxophones, clarinet, backing vocals Dougie Thomson - bass guitar Bob Siebenberg- drums, percussion Roger Hodgson was the main singer here
From the stage, Roger Hodgson told this song he has written like a prayer; as he does more often. Hide in your shell he said, is the most requested song at his live concerts.
great reaction this is my favorite song of that album, i'm 60 years old i was about 14 when this came out and loved it then and still love it to this day so glad your doing this album reaction , can't wait till u get to Rudy and the Title Track "Crime of the Century", This Band was ahead of thier time!!!!!
Far and away MY favorite Supertramp number. Both times I saw them in concert, they opened the show with "Hide In Your Shell". Check out "Gone Hollywood" from "Breakfast In America".
Just the way they move around the chords and jump in unexpected ways is amazing. To younger listeners - this is what you call a melody or a tune, a concept you may not be familiar with 😂
The beauty of albums when they came out in those days was that the lyrics were printed on the back, so you could follow as the music played. Sometimes what is being said is just as important as the instruments.
After four and a half decades I've finally learned the name of this superb and instantly recognizable tune! Just an ear-candy overload! Btw, it was fun watching Dan's invisible face-scrunchie come off partway through, lolol!
you cant tire of this album.a concept album dealing with mental illness, depression, rebelling against the system.look at the front cover.is the person trying to escape or get in.a musical masterpiece.
They were really on quite a roll starting with this album. Crisis? What Crisis?, Even in the Quietest Moments, and Breakfast in America. So many good to very good to excellent tunes.
Guess you never heard of this band called The Who? Homework time 📚 🇬🇧 During the '60's-70's, Pete Townshend was one of the leading voices for youthful angst. 🇨🇦
So much SUPERTRAMP! I’m new to your channel and drawn in because of Your Crime of the Century reactions. I’ll have to see what others you’ve done before I talk out of SCHOOL
I remember reading a great interview with one of the engineers on Breakfast in America. He said that Bob Siebenberg had the lightest kick drum foot he had ever known and this gave them huge scope to up the bass guitar without overloading the mix. The American record execs were really not used to this and were horrified, "You really want to do this?" Hell yeah!!!
Please don't forget to check out Supertramp's great self entitled debut album from 1970 - it's full of great tunes and interesting lyrics - for instance the lovely "Words Unspoken" 😊
Hey guys. Wish there was a way for you to have listened to Hide In Your Shell from the Live Paris album. That version is outstanding. This one is okay, but not quite the same. I truly hope you will be hitting the album, Even in the Quietest Moments, at some point. Not a bad song, and truly some of Supertramp's best work.
One of my favorite all time groups. Their album BREAKFAST IN AMERICA released in 1979 spawned 4 US Billboard hit singles. The album stayed at # 1 for 6 weeks. Supertramp has an unique sound that can't be duplicated. So happy you guys are featuring the group. Other songs worth listening to are SCHOOL, RUDY, TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME and GOODBYE STRANGER. keep up the good work.
My favorite Supertramp song: "Hide in your shell cos the world is out to bleed you for a ride/What will you gain making your life a little longer?" Rather than hiding in our shell, this spiritual song encourages us to reach out to those in need. Brilliant lyrics. Brilliant song. Brilliant album.
2 songwriters / leaders in.Supertramp. Roger Hodgson comes from a British folk/rock influence whereas Rick Davies’ influences were American jazz and R & B. That was the great thing about this band, the music had different “flavours”, depending on who wrote what. Then the excellent other musicians (Bob, Doug and John) do yeoman’s work at their craft and make amazing, timeless music. Listened to these guys since 8-tracks were a thing; their music never becomes stale. Peace from Toronto!
Supertramp had an excellent 5-album run from 1974-80. I have been a fan since 1974, which is when 'Crime of the Century' was released. It is a crime (pun intended) not to listen to the album start to finish. "Hide in Your Shell" was written and sung by Roger Hodgson (lead and backing vocals, guitars, piano, keyboards). The other primary songwriter is Rick Davies (lead and backing vocals, piano, harmonica). Roger and Rick were 2 founding members. Supertramp had released 2 albums prior to 'Crime' that didn't do well and were vastly different. They started looking for other musicians in 1973 to record something else. The other musicians who answered the trade ads in London were John Helliwell (backing vocals, woodwind instruments, keyboards), Dougie Thompson (bass) and Bob Siebenberg (percussion). I was fortunate enough to see them live twice (1975 & 1977) and they were soooooo good!! 💙💙💙💙💙
You really should check out Supertramp's sadly overlooked, but great self entitled debut album from 1970 - full of great tunes and interesting lyrics, a sign of great things to come.
Is she listening to the same thing he is? He's there rocking. She's... Btw, Full noise-canceling closed headphones are best for Supertramp's music. Maybe a little THC as well.
I love how she gives nothing away till the song is finished. Maybe the very first finger snap seemed to draw her attention but otherwise, watching her face I got the distinct feeling she wasn't even enjoying it and was perhaps bored or simply politely bearing with it, so concentrated was she. Then the big smile at the end. 😊 That's definitely the way I listen to music too. FOCUSED. Maybe a tear streaming from my eye from the sheer joy of the genius I'm hearing. It's probably why I don't dance - I'm enjoying myself too much to be making my body pop about!
You missed the boat if you didn't get the lyrics. The subject matter is freaking deep and emotionally charged. You really should have the lyrics downloaded and listen again.
Hide In Your Shell Supertramp Hide in your shell cos the world is out to bleed you for a ride What will you gain making your life a little longer Heaven or Hell, was the journey cold that gave you eyes of steel Shelter behind painting your mind and playing joker Too frightening to listen to a stranger Too beautiful to put your pride in danger You're waiting for someone to understand you But you've got demons in your closet And you're screaming out to stop it Saying life's begun to cheat you Friends are out to beat you Grab on to what you scramble for Don't let the tears linger on inside now Cos it's sure time you gained control If I can help you, if I can help you If I can help you, just let me know Well, let me show you the nearest signpost To get your heart back and on the road If I can help you, if I can help you If I can help you, just let me know All through the night as you lie awake and hold yourself so tight What do you need, a second-hand movie-star to tend you I as a boy, I believed the saying the cure for pain was love How would it be if you could see the world through my eyes Too frightening, the fire's becoming colder Too beautiful, to think you're getting older You're looking for someone to give an answer But what you see is just illusion You're surrounded by confusion Saying life's begun to cheat you Friends are out to beat you Grab on to what you can scramble for Don't let the tears linger on inside now Cos it's sure time you gained control If I can help you, if I can help you If I can help you, just let me know Well, let me show you the nearest signpost To get your heart back and on the road If I can help you, if I can help you If I can help you, just let me know I wanna know I wanna know you Well let me know you I wanna feel you I wanna touch you Please let me near you Can you hear what I'm saying Well I'm hopin', I'm dreamin', I'm prayin' I know what you're thinkin' See what you're seein' Never ever let yourself go Hold yourself down, hold yourself down Why d'ya hold yourself down Why don't you listen, you can Trust me There's a place I know the way to A place there is need to feel you Feel that you're alone Hear me I know exactly what you're feelin' Cos all your troubles are within you Please begin to see that I'm just bleeding to Love me, love you Loving is the way to Help me, help you Why must we be so cool, oh so cool Oh, we're such damn fools

Yes, he really still can sing that way, or at least he could last time I saw him doing something on YT. Kind of amazing. Saw these guys 42 years ago!
Cary, Roger was the last live act I saw also before the pandemic hit. His voice has not changed over all these years!
Saved me in Highschool. A song that read my mind. I screamed this song out for years

They are fantastic for sure. Thanks Paul!
What a song! Incredible song writing
This was my favourite song from COTC, back in my '70's high school days...great melodic hook & lyrical content👍

Helped me way back in the 70's, so glad I still have the album
can't wait for "Rudy", a Masterpiece !!!!!
We're excited to hear it!
the reason I became a fan back in the 70s -were at a concert i Copenhagen with 600 spectators - shortly after they played for enormus crowds.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Just the way they move around the chords and jump in unexpected ways is amazing.

No, the band has publicly stated that it is NOT a concept album, but the fact that it sounds like one makes it even cooler, IMHO
They were really on quite a roll starting with this album. Crisis? What Crisis?, Even in the Quietest Moments, and Breakfast in America. So many good to very good to excellent tunes.
This one is a high point for me on the album, but that's just me.its just a break from the darker tracks.this album is a masterpiece.
Well said Melvin!

I love this album. I wore my first one out when it first came out and had to buy a second one. “Hide in your shell” was my favorite cut (still is😊)
I forgot how talented Super Tramp really was. They never got the notoriety other bands in their genre got.
They are great!
They did in Canada 😉.
@@hklinker oh I forgot they were Canadian also..lol
?? Breakfast in America was a #1 smash in the US. Famous Last Words was #5 on the album charts in 1982. 6 Top 20 hits. not bad at all.
feelin a little Supertrampy
I just love Supertramp can't help it
My favorite track - along with Rudy
Its a great one!
One of their most melodic songs.
For sure

Hide In Your Shell
Supertramp
Hide in your shell cos the world is out to bleed you for a ride
What will you gain making your life a little longer
Heaven or Hell, was the journey cold that gave you eyes of steel
Shelter behind painting your mind and playing joker
Too frightening to listen to a stranger
Too beautiful to put your pride in danger
You're waiting for someone to understand you
But you've got demons in your closet
And you're screaming out to stop it
Saying life's begun to cheat you
Friends are out to beat you
Grab on to what you scramble for
Don't let the tears linger on inside now
Cos it's sure time you gained control
If I can help you, if I can help you
If I can help you, just let me know
Well, let me show you the nearest signpost
To get your heart back and on the road
If I can help you, if I can help you
If I can help you, just let me know
All through the night as you lie awake and hold yourself so tight
What do you need, a second-hand movie-star to tend you
I as a boy, I believed the saying the cure for pain was love
How would it be if you could see the world through my eyes
Too frightening, the fire's becoming colder
Too beautiful, to think you're getting older
You're looking for someone to give an answer
But what you see is just illusion
You're surrounded by confusion
Saying life's begun to cheat you
Friends are out to beat you
Grab on to what you can scramble for
Don't let the tears linger on inside now
Cos it's sure time you gained control
If I can help you, if I can help you
If I can help you, just let me know
Well, let me show you the nearest signpost
To get your heart back and on the road
If I can help you, if I can help you
If I can help you, just let me know
I wanna know
I wanna know you
Well let me know you
I wanna feel you
I wanna touch you
Please let me near you
Can you hear what I'm saying
Well I'm hopin', I'm dreamin', I'm prayin'
I know what you're thinkin'
See what you're seein'
Never ever let yourself go
Hold yourself down, hold yourself down
Why d'ya hold yourself down
Why don't you listen, you can
Trust me
There's a place I know the way to
A place there is need to feel you
Feel that you're alone
Hear me
I know exactly what you're feelin'
Cos all your troubles are within you
Please begin to see that I'm just bleeding to
Love me, love you
Loving is the way to
Help me, help you
Why must we be so cool, oh so cool
Oh, we're such damn fools
Boy did this song speak to a troubled 17 year old ! Most of their music did !
I can sum this album up with one word........
RUDY.
Thanks Brad! Looking forward to it!
Sitting between Dan and 10cc...
Great reaction but a lot of white noise in the back ground
Sorry about that
an anthem to all the bleeding heart liberals out there, including moi.
Dude. What’s with the massive drinks in your vids?
Coffee drinkers need tons of water 😆
You're right! It's a very emo song.
Thanks!
Did you ever recognize that's their no one way don''t like?
Interesting how you completely missed the point of this song :)
It happens to all of us one time or another, difference is we’re on camera with a real first time reaction
Great song and album choice but you guys look bored with pretty much everything you listen to!
She looks bored, too bad, great song.
She likes to zone in to intellectual music. She talks about how she feels at the end:). Thanks for watching!
Sorry, this way over your heads. Please go back to Taylor Swift music.
Oh yay another internet tough guy 🥱 How original. We don’t listen to Taylor tough guy lolll
