They are an incredibly easy band to like. Their songs are short and catchy and distinct, completely lacking in pretentiousness. Just straight forward great bangers, one after the other played by good looking guys who dress cool. If I had to come up with some bands who were great but hard to get into at first the Strokes would be about as far away from making that list as possible. What part of their sound, or image do you think turns people off at first?

I started listening to them because a girl I liked in middle school had “The Strokes” written on her backpack in sharpie, so naturally I had to research and discover this awesome band. She never was interested in me but I was hooked with this band. Introduced them to my girlfriends there on after. So many memories, good and bad, with their music. I’m about to be 24 but those memories never fade when I put on one of their records.

My favourite part of this song:
    -The no-nonsense mechanical beat
    -The super catchy bassline

    -The simple-yet-evocative lyrics
    -The gorgeous pseudo-lofi production

Something about The Strokes on those first two albums... they were just one of those bands where their sound is like a total gestalt experience. To me personally the sound always embodied that of an intelligent 20-something going through something of an existential crisis and finding him/herself more and more disinterested in everything and drinking heavily to cope.

this song is so senior year of high school for me. my now ex girlfriend, the stress i went through and still go through today, this song captures it in a weird way. it's so hard to explain (no pun intended). life is taking me in such a weird and dark place and i hate it but love it at the same time. i'm scared to see the day where it makes no sense for me to say "well i am too young and they are too old". i'm still super young and have a long way to go but i'm stuck. i hope you, if you're reading this and also feel stuck, find your escape and happiness like i'm trying to.

    LYRICS
    Was an honest man
    Asked me for the phone
    Tried to take control
Oh, I don't see it that way
I don't see it that way
    We shared some ideas
    All obsessed with fame
    Says we're all the same
Oh, I don't see it that way
I don't see it that way
    Raised in Carolina
    I'm not like that
    Tryin' to remind her
    When we go back
I missed the last bus, I'll take the next train
I'll try but you see, it's hard to explain
I say the right thing, but act the wrong way
I like it right here, but I cannot stay
I watch the TV, forget what I'm told
Well, I am too young, and they are too old
The joke is on you, this place is a zoo
    You're right it's true
    He says he can't decide
I shake my head to say
    Everything's just great
    Oh, I just can't remember
    I just can't remember
    Raised in Carolina
She says, "I'm not like that"
    Tryin' to remind her
    When we go back
I say the right thing, but act the wrong way
I like it right here, but I cannot stay
I watch the TV, forget what I'm told
Well, I am too young, and they are too old
Oh man, can't you see I'm nervous? So please
Pretend to be nice, so I can be mean
I missed the last bus, we'll take the next train
I'll try but you see, it's hard to explain

The car against city lights at 0:08, the bombers at 0:41, Apollo 11's boosters at 0:52, crowds dancing on a multicolored light-up dancefloor at 2:28, microchips at 2:32. My grandparents that are gone now, some people from my family that were important, the day that I almost lost my mom in the hospital, the day that my father almost left the house when I was 13 and I cried in front of him... my first serious relationship and all the mistakes that I committed and that eventually led to the end of it, and how much I still remember her.
