    We are moving to Guam in august. This video was extremely helpful. Thank you for showing the more nuanced features of Guam, that might otherwise be seemingly mundane to you.

    I'm looking forward to the "fun".
    I spent 7 1/2 years on Guam and LOVED it. 5 1/2 in the Navy (1995-2001) and 2 as a civilian contractor 2006-2008) doing the same job except foe 3X the pay.
    Some practical things newbies need to know are:
    1. If you're Military for the basic things there's nothing better than the Exchanges/Commissaries
    2. If your car breaks down put a "for sale" sign on it before you go for help otherwise it will bet stolen or stripped for parts.
    3. For military people entire families are required to attend rules of the sea orientation because of the undertow around the island. That said, Everyone should do that. It could be life or death. The Philippines is a very long way.
    4. Fun stuff: Go to the village fiestas. Each village has one every year. You won't regret it.

    I’m from Guam, I’ve lived and travel all over the world. Videos like this are very helpful for those moving to a new place. A lot of people do these kinds of videos and I have no problem with it. Sorry you got scolded for just showing where things were. I didn’t find anything wrong with it. Like Guam, other countries can be the same. Where I’m at, they don’t really service American spec cars, because of that we have to order parts and wait weeks sometimes months on top of having to find a mechanic that can do the job and could be hours away. I’ve also lived in Alaska and in remote parts things are just as expensive due to shipping costs. It’s crazy because you wouldn’t think it would be expensive because it’s a state but we made due for the time we lived there. Thank you for showing the island, there’s a lot of new things you’ve covered that I haven’t seen before. Great content! Hope Guam is treating you well! 🙂 I miss my island.

      Guam was great but we moved back to mainland USA recently . I’ve heard Alaska is also difficult getting items shipped , maybe we can live there someday

      Honestly, it’s the same everywhere, there are areas in the USA & else-ware from the USA, that are just confusing & stressful to find as well, especially living in remote areas away from cities that are expensive & limited. Living in smaller location does limits your choices bc of your living locations.

      I spent 3 months in Guam for Contractor work and I really liked the place. I never got a bad vib from anyone nor did I every feel uneasy going anywhere and we covered the whole island. The only thing I didn't like about Guam is the humidity. When I first walked out of the airport to get the rental car I thought I was gonna die. It was 11pm at night and the humidity was something I've never experienced before. The Hotel AC stayed wide open for 3 months . Haha

    I taught school at the Junior high for a year in the mid-80s At that time over half of the students were from the Philippines, maybe 20-30 % Guamanian, and 10% Howlie. The kids are outstanding to work, so polite and attentive. First thing I learned was all of the teachers raced to their cars at dismissal. Back home I was used to spending an hour or two after school but I quickly learned to jump in our car and head to the beach. We really enjoyed everything especially the almost weekly village celebrations around the island. We'd show up at a little village and all of the residents had open houses with food and drink for every one. Really welcoming. We were there before the development of big box stores so we lived on the local economy and quickly adjusted to the island life of, 'no hurry'.

But then at the end I saw you reveal yourself and be so open. I suffer with anxiety. It's awful. My heart goes out to you. I think it's great that you're out there doing amazing things and doing the best when everything seems scary. Also, when I was 21 I moved to Guam as a civilian to work at PIC. I was the only gay person in my group of cohorts. But it was still the time of my life. I'm 45 now but I think back one that time always with great fondness. Anywho.... Good stuff. Keep it up.

    I'm moving to Guam in January and have a 2001 Nissan Maxima that has the windshield wiper light on and needs a new inspection but failed previously because of that light... I know very dumb. This is my first time out of the states, so my question is even though I get my car inspected here in NJ do I have to get it reinspected and registered when I go to Guam? And if so Joe and Franks auto shop would be the place to go, correct? Awesome video by the way!!!

    • @CandEAdventures
      @CandEAdventures  2 года назад +1

      We will try to help to the best of our knowledge - from our shipping experience the vehicle has to have a valid registration in order to ship. After that, you would go by the laws in Guam. The car should be registered in Guam which means it has to be inspected there. Their inspections are just safety, super easy. They don’t look at lights on the dash, just basics. Head lights, brake lights, blinkers, horn. It takes about 30 seconds (it’s amazing). Joe and Franks was great, yes! They’ve got a drive thru for the inspection! Hopefully you can get your car shipped without issue. Good luck! It’s a stressful/complicated process.

    You can video anywhere in public but here on Guam government, people don’t want you to have proof of what they are doing. But things like that are a small price to pay to be on what I believe to be the best all-around place in the world.

    Sorry I'm late to the party, I was having uh, issues. Yeah, that's it, issues. (If you want the lowdown I'll send you an email) Anyhoo, this was fun! I liked the cute and lovely, yet cynical and self deprecating travel agent-esque tour of the important highlights of what you need to find in your first few weeks in Guam,.. so well done there!! Have you guys done any more exploring as to if you are planning to head back to the States and buy a Van or do some Homesteading? Or, if you've decided to stay put a while longer there in Guam, enjoying the life you've built low these past few years? Of course then if you are still bound states-side at some point in the near future we have to bring up the delicate subject of what to do with Shiho? Will she be accompanying you back to the US of A? IS she going to be blinded by the bright lights of the big city and all those other American cliches? What will become of Mona? The Island is the only home she's ever known, can she adjust to the life of the typical American? I guess that like in all matters, time will tell. Sending love to you all from the Great White North (Now that everything has begun to thaw it's a muted Brown instead of White) - Dave

      @@CandEAdventures Thank you for your response. Do you have a video regarding upfront costs or what to expect to spend when you get to Guam? For example if you move there as a civilian, how do you go about acquiring things like housing, utilities, vehicles, furniture if need be?

    • @CandEAdventures
      @CandEAdventures  2 года назад +1

      @@tortugamonroe Unfortunately, we didn’t make a video specific to moving to Guam and the associated purchases. It’s just this one. We mainly focus on outdoor experiences in our content. But we can try to help you a bit.
      For any used stuff, most people do not use Craigslist. Almost everything is done over Facebook for sale pages/groups. If you search “Guam for sale” in Facebook, you’ll come across MANY groups to join.
      Housing - Ellen’s realty is pretty accurate/reliable. You’ll have to contact a realtor to look at anything listed and they will typically help you across all listings available, not just through their company. Rent averages $2,250 there because of military housing allowance. You can find cheaper, but expect an apartment if under that price and not all come with AC or a washer/dryer. You can find some houses under that price, it is just not common.
      Utilities - power and water will be through GPA and GWA. You will pay a deposit for both. The deposit for power is based on number of rooms. The power is quite expensive there if you have AC and they have been raising prices in the past year.
      Vehicles - lots of dealerships on island. Depends on your budget. Ours was VERY LOW, so we went with what are known as “Guam bombs”. Go from point a to point b. It is safe to say cars below $6k will need some form of mechanical repair/will not be perfect. Auto repair can be VERY EXPENSIVE. Takes a long time to ship parts there and parts are heavy. Cars without working or leaking AC aren’t uncommon below that price.
      Furniture - used will be the easiest. Most military buy on base and leave within a couple years and sell. If you don’t have base access, there are a few stores like Kmart to get some stuff. There isn’t a good general furniture store unless you go pricey

    • @CandEAdventures
      @CandEAdventures  2 года назад +2

      @@tortugamonroe The upfront costs are completely dependent on your budget/preference. It is hard to say. We landed with about $6,000 and that was gone within the first month. We spent $4,250 on two cars when we got there, first month rent plus deposit and that’s all the cash we came with. Other people I knew bought nicer cars for $10,000 or financed a new car when they landed. Just depends. Gas was about 4 dollars when we got there in 2019. Got up to just below $6 when we left in June. Our average power bill was $400 by the time we left after power rates were raised 3 times. That was keeping AC off during the day and in select rooms. Groceries are more expensive off base, so if you don’t have base access…you may limit what you purchase. Or not if you are financially fine? Milk was $12 a gallon before we left off base. Frozen foods, dairy, and fresh produce are going to be generally pricier. Canned and shelf stable goods are cheaper on average. Restaurants are average prices to stateside.
