I would definitely do the big 4 with 0 gauge ofc i got the big 8 in mine people say there's no need but why upgrade the alternator if your not going to upgrade the wire i have a 60 dollar walmart battery that ive been beating on and i mean beating the hell out of it even bumping music with the truck off for 30 minutes and it starts right up and im running a rockford fosgate bd 1000 at 1 ohm with the stock 1986 chevy s10 alternator i can just imagine what its gonna do when i upgrade to this alternator thanks for the video
Hey, great video! Another question I just ordered the alternator and went to the shop. Do you have to upgrade the big 3 wires? The shop said you may not need to.
Thanks! 👍 No the alternator replacement does not require the big 3 upgrade, as I showed in the alternator video there is stock replacments for the astro rated to 145 amps. The big 3 is a good idea when you start running large accessories on your van such as amplifiers, dc chargers, winches etc. It is easy to do yourself you just need wire, lugs and a crimper. Probably $70 ish on amazon or at a place that sells that type of thing What accessories do you have on your Astro?
@alwaysgoodinthewoods All I want to do is upgrade my stock old alternator to something more powerful to runs some accessories later on. Right my alternator is probably going bad, and is probably old. When I bought my astro van everything was stock from factory. It needed work.
Thank you for the video! I was about to order the same alternator but saw options for a 220amp AD244 as well for quite cheap. I believe it's a direct fit, but I may need a new belt that's 1" longer. What are your thoughts, if you don't mind me asking? Overkill? I plan on doing a camper build with at least 200ah battery bank and 2000w inverter. Charge it with a DC to DC and solar ideally.
No problem! I had been meaning to at least mention it in a video as it is a good supporting upgrade for a van build that seldomly gets talked about. The higher amperage is good and nice to have that "overhead" if needed, as long as build quality is good and the numbers are real and not sales hype. The max output amperage will be higher dependent on the rpm they are being spun at, if you pause on the video where I pull mine out of the box on the "dyno sheet" it shows it can output much higher than the rated 145 amps at higher rpm. All that to say I guess it depends 😅 I will link a thread below that sold me on the AD244 and touches on a few points of interest, idle output, smaller pulleys, longevity, availablilty etc. www.astrosafari.com/threads/alternator-replacement-size-question.150228/ Some say you need the longer belt, the alternator pulley does sit up higher due to the larger housing, but my stock belt fit back on no problems, its fairly new so I doubt its stretched much. That sounds like a good setup 👍I currently have 100ah of lithium and has done the job and been easy to charge when on road trips and driving every day, but I cant park up for 3 days(2nights) and be covered. I will say phase 2 of my electrical build will be most likely be 200ah with a second Orion (2x30amps) for 60amps of alternator charge. I also have been looking at black friday deals on solar kits...😅 Good luck with your build! Its a lot but very worth it 😁👍
Thanks for all the info man! I really appreciate it! I got the same alternator and it went in easy as pie. I also did the big 3. I had a question about the stock positive terminal for the alternator. Is it okay to leave it hanging there? Did you end up disconnecting it from your battery post as well? Idk I just woke up and had a thought that it's still positively charged and might be touches things as I drive? Thanks for all your videos I really appreciate them!
