A great deal of misunderstanding here. Tractors and combines are not eligible for Agricultural Inheritance tax relief. Only land and buildings and including the farmhouse and farm cottages. The issue is that the cost of modern machinery saddles the farmer with high levels of debt already so he won't be able to find another £400K or considerably more to pay an inheritance tax bill. Banks won't lend against a tax bill. Some politicians suggest you could take out a life policy to cover these debts. That assumes the farmer has that level of disposable income. You can have solar panels in farm fields if you mount them vertically in rows where a tractor can go between them with its appliances. It's been done in certain places in Europe already... 🤔. More support for the local farmers is needed though, not more taxes ... 😉
The inheritance tax affect farmers because when handing over to their younger family they will have to find upto a £1million pounds tax. That equals the whole value of the farm, so the farmers son or daughter will be left with nothing, so no farmers. The land will be sold to corporate companies, whose aim will be profit, NOT food quality. It just shows the lack of intelligence within the "Labour" Party. The tax is 20% on anything above the value of £1m of land and if a family home is on the land then the threshold goes up to £2m. of the 3100 farms for sale in the UK right now only 600 are valued above £2m. Let say they have a £3m farm of which there are only 400 for sale, they will have a tax bill of £200k that can be paid back over 10 years.
