To be _as fair as possible..._ he would need the crown to fend off the Candy Queen who was still actively attacking them. Grabbing Ice Marcy and running would leave them both vulnerable, so it's best for both to get the crown back, deal with the situation, and _then_ help her. Like that thing on airplanes, where, in case of an emergency, you're instructed _specifically_ to put _your_ mask on first _before_ helping other people, because if you're conscious enough to do that, then it's best to keep that advantage by making sure you _stay_ conscious so that you're able to help others in the first place. It's not much use sacrificing yourself to put a mask on someone already passed out or struggling if you're going to pass out in the process.

The ice king comes from an old Russian myth(?). I think the Simon stuff came from people calling ice king a 1 dimensional character.
