Zuko definitely had the best acting in the show. You could feel all his emotions and his complete obsession with catching Aang

Zuko, Iroh and Ozai are the only characters that are solid, maybe because the writing team understood the assignment. However someone like Azula yelling to the top of her lung ‘for the fire nation!’ is just straight cringe. I don’t think I ever heard Azula yell in the cartoon since she already was a commanding presence.
Zuko fought and acted circles around 99% of the cast. His anger his fighting flaming kicks. His drive and line delivery were almost perfect. His character arc in season 1 was so well crafted.
They only missed the part that zuko use his fist to fire bend.. for the rest he is a good zuko

Zuko didn't produce lightnings. Uncle Iroh taught him only to redirect them. Azula and Ozai can produce lightning, but Zuko is the only one who knows how to defend himself against them.

@@PJsReads I'll really like it if Zuko learns how to create lightning in the show. But if the live-action is going to follow in the footsteps of animation, that's not going to happen. In the cartoon, Zuko never learned the Lightning Bend, he only learned how to defend himself from them.

Agreed! The only thing I'm kinda missing in Katara is the anger, especially in the fight against Master Pakku. The new show's Katara is sometimes a bit too timid while the original Katara could be headstrong and a bit sassy at times
The guy who portrays Zuko actually sounds like the animated version at times. I don’t know if that’s his normal speaking voice, but if he’s doing an impression of Zuko’s voice it’s a good one.

One of my favorite Zuko lines
Zuko his actor was by far the best for me. He portrayed Zuko so well. Not only in personality but also in terms of bending. The way he kicks fire is so good
Katara is badass here, also zuko is perfectly casted and written here, as an og fan, i liked this show.

The guy who played Zuko was extremely well casted. He and Sokka carried the entire show. Katara, though I liked the action scene, left a lot to be desired. Probably the most forgettable of the main casts.

Katara was the weakest of all the child actors…sokka and zuko then aang,aang was allright…katara was just emotionless for me..
They didn’t give katara any personality , they removed all the mature and nurturing elements but that is the core of the character it even created multiple storylines and adds debth to her character later on in the series, so without those there is no katara
They white washed her character and toned down her personality as a feminist
I thought I was the only one that felt this & thought I was going crazy lol. I really wanted to love her character 🥲 but there’s a lot left to be desired from her acting indeed..
My problem with Katara being self-taught in the adaptation is the fact that they don't show her teaching herself at all. She reads and practices from one simple waterbending scroll and suddenly she's a master?

Huh? Did you not watch the episode where Jet teaches Katara how to channel her emotions? Or when Aang compliments Katara about the Ice Discs and she says: "I saw Earthbenders do it, so I thought I'd try".
They also show you she's always practicing her forms, even when there's no water around.
I don't know what more hints you need.

I feel really sorry for the person who plays Katara. It seems like the writers obviously wanted the character to start out with less confidence and develop more throughout, but that paired with some weak dialogue as a part of the script makes it very hard to like her character😢 even though the actress does a really good job
I agree with you. I noticed that she was starting to become more like ‘Katara’ towards the end of the show and there was a definite change in her writing which made that easier for the actress.
The actress was bad and so was the writing.

I already said this a million time but they found the right actor for Zuko. Best character both in Cartoon and in live action. Iroh is good too, but the anger and fear that Zuko shows during his fight with Ozai is 10/10. Every action this guy take during a fight just look like it gotta hurt.

The actor who played zuko really nailed the "zuko rage" i hope we gotta see katara's "angry mom" side in the next season. Also i couldn't really feel the psychotic tendencies from Azula, i hope they work on that too.

“You rise with the moon, I rise with the sun”. In the animated show, Katara won with the moon, and Zuko won with the sun rising and was able to take Aang. I like what the series did here better. She put up a good fight, but she needs to still lose.

I don't care what anyone says this show was great and I loved it the actors were perfectly casted. I'll admit katara was a littke flat but she still did great with what she was given but i do hope season 2 adds her snark from the original series
Katara is supposed to have many layers to her. She’s caring when she needs to be, she’s feisty when she needs to be, and so many other nuances to her character. Unfortunately in this adaptation, she’s kinda one note. Even so much as a bigger range in facial expression (especially in the eyes) would’ve made a huge difference.

They again ruined her character by making her a quiet mary sue who apparently mastered waterbending in a week by just teaching herself. Katara is not self taught, the whole point of her character in the North Pole arc is how she so badly wanted to be trained by an actual waterbending master, her fight and apparent relationship with Pakku helped change his sexist stand on combative waterbending and she evolved to be the best student he ever had, surpassing even Aang to the point where she was appointed as his official teacher. They took away the importance of the risks she took and her sacrifices to be where she is now.

One of my only complaints: they did Kiawentiio dirty because they didn’t give her any room to really explore Katara - and we’ve seen in interviews and her audition tape that she can.

I wish they gave Katara more emotionally loaded scenes. Because she comes off very flat. Maybe the actor is finding the right balance, or being given not the best direction plus lack of moments. Also, I wish they had far more scenes of her teaching herself, maybe reading from the scrolls then trying things out, failing and so on. I hope they give her more in the next season.

@@rafacasbe7864So what.. I'll start by saying I actually enjoyed the live action but this is my biggest pet peeve.
She did not get trained once by a master in the live action.. in the cartoon at least she had some time under Paku. Katara went from 0-master without any training from an actual master. Cheapens the title 'master' for me. Zuko has been training his whole life in comparison..and zuko ain’t no joke.
Either you miss like every dialogue that she talks about how she trained (aka almost every scene she's talking and she's learning on the way) or what and if we're going by the series timeline it's more of she's on par with zuko now(with buff from the full moon) but not master since she couldn't beat pakku
They left out his best line, "You rise with the moon, I rise with the sun."
The rapid growth of Katara was unnecessary and unrealistic - a shame, cause they could have shown her growing rather than being a "master" overnight
In the animated series, the duel started at night and Katara was beating Zuko accordingly until daybreak came and he took her out of commission with a surprise attack while she had her guard down. In the movie, they were equal until Zuko threw two fireballs at Katara and caught her with the one she didn't block. Here Katara had the edge (albeit not as much as the animated series) and was able to counter anything Zuko threw at her. Despite it, they were about evenly matched until Zhao took out the moon rendering her powerless and weak allowing Zuko the chance to finish her off even though he approached slowly and cautiously. A giant fireball interrupted them before Zuko could. I think I favor this version of the duel the best.
I just wish they had included the scene where the full moon was seen in the sky boosting Katara’s bending. That scene is still one of Katara’s best moments in the original cartoon.

but the confrontation between Katara and Zuko was strange; Overall, Katara reached Zuko's level in just her first summer of self-taught training.
They curiously downplay the importance of going to the North in the first place or the rol of masters if Katara was already so good on her own.
They potray her as she can learn the bending at first glance, like Mozart can play the piano once he listened to a piece.😂

@@JeanCG7 She also achieved a level of water mastery enough to defeat Zuko at the end of book 1; but she needed Paku's classes, just as she needed the old woman's instructions to control the blood.
The issue is not Katara's ability itself; is to minimize the role of her teachers to one where she needs none.
I like Katara's facial expressions when she fights in this season. It shows how she concentrates and being careful on every move because she's still a beginner and still learning some moves. Looking forward for a fiercer badass Katara next season hihihi

There are so many things in this show that I fucking love, and things that just frustrate me that they changed.
This was not one of them. Zuko was fucking perfect in this show.

This scene may have the steps from the show, but it just feels empty. In the original, Katara was absolutely ferocious in this scene, and she had a lot of outward passion in the original show.

I don't how they would bring Hama in... considering the waterbenders were all addressed to be killed. Especially being netflix they can make it darker.....perhaps instead she killed the firebender attempting to kill her by discovering bloodbending....rather than on the ship she was imprisoned. Hama would be from an early attack on the Southern Water Tribe. Nothing but bitterness as she watched the Fire Nation from within as a 'citizen' to disguise herself. Like Jet, she wanted everyone to suffer...and I would think she ended up killing them instead....and just imagine how much darker it would be forcing Katara to bloodbend. I would cry for her. If they do this.

Lmmfaooo I don't get why they just don't expand on the animation and give us more. These live movies/shows are WEAK. I feel no spirit! I think Aang was okay but goodness it's so boring. Just thinking of all the seasons they could have added on to the animation....

Although I like the casting for the most part of the show, I think Katara is way too flat. She’s not the complex and fiery, motherly Katara in the animated series. She definitely had a temper, and that was one of my favorite parts of her character!
They're building up the character for her. I'm sure she will be fierce in the next chapters.
I love how people are just throwing "woke" around like it describes anything. lol. Here she was underwritten and underperformed (they all kinda were, honestly, except for Zuko). Simple as that.

Yeah, that’s my issue with it as well. I hope they are paying the actress to improve her martial arts skills even when they not in production. Because this ain’t gonna cut it especially in season 2. They get a pass now cuz she’s not supposed to be great yet, but season 2 they better step it all the way up.

Katara's actress plays pretty well, but im sorry, she doesnt look as involved as other actors did in the fights. She looks emotionless, she doesn't shout out of effort when she's making an attack, she just exhales. Besides, I think she wore too much clothes on, in the anime she wasnt wearing that much in the fight. I think that made her fighting anticlimatic.

They copied the line "you found a master haven't you" from the anime, even though here it makes zero sense, since she never trained with a master. I really dislike that since what was once the product of hard work and dedication is now a "meh, I just read a scroll and became perfect"

This makes little to no sense to me. Realistically, why would Zuko even stay back and try to fighr her? If anything, he would've just blown past her to try to get to Aang as soon as possible. In the cartoon, Katara is actively staying as close to Aang as possible so he dosen't get taken.

I wish they would have shown Katara being taught SOME waterbending, whether by paku or by one of the water bending boys. I know she is suppose to be a prodigy, but even they have teachers for a little while. As for aang he could have been talking to the other water avatar/in avatar state while this was happening, so he doesn't get to learn, if they didn't want him to.
Also, the line "yes, you're looking at her" is kind of cheesey. I would have changed it to "Yes, and we water benders DON'T back down."
The only other complaint I have for this episode and episode 7 is I wish they would have had more sokka and yue. Like, have them go on a date on appa, or have it seem like a few days have passed with a couple of dates. Just to make it seem like they are a couple compared to like the 5 days they barely knew each other and then the war happens.
What a fantastic series!! I finished watching the show a few days ago and now I'm rewatching it again! This show was a masterpiece!! This cast was so well chosen!!

Katara, a person who couldn’t lift a ball of water like a month ago (probably less) and self-trained for this amount of time with one scroll goes toe to toe with Zuko - a person who trained for his entire life with the best teachers possible, and calls herself a master. I wish I could unsee this.

Hopefully, they'll train the Katara's actress to have more emotion. We just kept cringing on her acting, but I have hope for her. She's still young. She'll get better.
I think in the most of scenes she kinda plays it well enough. But in the fights, she has to look furious/desperate for her life, she has to shout more when making an attack to display she's using all her strength to win; this way she's kinda wasting all the involvement Zuko's actor is putting into the fight with all his expressions

Okay I understand people having problems with making an Live action adaptation of ALTA. But you have to give it to them they did some casting really good, like Dallas Liu for Zuko. He was amazing!

And I understand people not liking the changes they did, but I thought they were good. How the expanded on Zuko's character, Shown the burden Aang had and how the pressure of it was. I liked that they showed that trauma can hold you back, like with Katara about her mom. And how much pressure Sokka had to live up to, how much he was in charge of, how he had to grow up early and not be "just a boy" like he said earlier.

If it were the comet then ZUKO would fry her. But on a full moon like in this scene, Katara would mop the floor with him. Toph, Katara, and ZUKO by the end of the series are equally matched.

at the end of book 3 Katara is without a doubt one of the most versatile waterbenders that exist, but I think she is not at the same level of mastery that Aang has over the air or less the level of control of Toph over the eart.

this live action is more believable for "real-life" you guys expect it to be a carbon copy of the original series, where is the fun in that, this adaption brings new changes whilst still keeping true to the original, they're not to over-exaggerated like the original, they're believable and easy to take in, I bet if they were directed to act the same exact way as the original series you guys would complain and say "this is cringey" or "they're doing too much" literally pick a struggle, either be grateful we're still getting ATLA content or just don't watch it at all, I'm embarrassed to even be a part of the ATLA fandom when every time I look around at the comments to express my gratitude all I see are whining babies because they didn't get what they were expecting nor wanted, keep your expectations low, its your fault you feel this way, not the cast and not the directors, some of you do not deserve the title of 'Fan' and you tarnish the beauty that ATLA brings to this already disgusting world, be grateful or forever remain a hateful troglodyte.
Okay and Kataras acting is still wooden either way and people are allowed to critique all the bad aspects of the show
Pretty dense to categorise genuine criticisms, such as mediocre acting, poor pacing and writing as "hateful" and to say be "grateful". Nothing is beyond reproach.

Here I am spoiling myself. lol! Gonna watch this finale tonight since I finished watching episode 6 and 7 last night.
This made Katara more a badass. Pakku didn't teach her...she was self taught and deemed a master. Even doing techniques other waterbenders didnt. Which shows how exceptional she was...
I disagree. I think they totally robbed Katara of her original arc. I don't know if you've ever trained martial arts but not having a coach or master doesn't get you far. Katara had potential, but she had to work really hard and was jealous of Aang. They botched the story. It just shows how many people have a fundamental misunderstanding of the show.
@@arbogast4950 Yea them not showing her jealousy of Aangs natural ability to control waterbending was a big miss imo... And theres also the fact that she had to humble herself to be taught under Pakku, which was entirely skipped. In the animation, pakku and katara learn from each other... in the live action, it's obviously just framed as a girlboss moment, defeating sexism.

@@arbogast4950 Yeah, like all the prodigies on the show needed training. The idea of her being self taught is nonsensical and it cheapens the magic system in the show. Because in the show bending isn’t magic. It is an extension of martial arts. That’s why Katara could barely do anything at the start. She improved throughout season 1 prior to her training at the North Pole because she had do a lot of fighting which highlights what she can do on her own. And she’s pretty good. BUT the formal instruction by a master is what propelled her to being great.

If anything, it shows how bad the writing is and how cutting so much content from the animated show really hollows out the characters, Katara the most.

I'm going to have to disagree with you there. Any lore expansions should only happen under the creators watchful eye. The adaptation should have strived to be more like the cartoon and have less stuff added especially when the stuff added is so dumb

@@forcecaptainoverlordsuprem2964 by "expanding the lore" I meant adapting other mangas that already exist, of course with the creators' permission and help. What I meant was that I've been waiting for more tv content from the avatar world and a Netflix series would've been a great chance to talk about, for example, kyoshi, yang chan or any other "new" (existing but not already adapted into tv) avatar's story.
Anyway, I totally see what you're saying.
I guess it's my problem, as I hardly ever find any type of re-make enjoyable.

My main issues are:
1. This show treats their audience like we're dumb. They have the characters just announce everything they feel as if we can't interpret it ourselves
2. Every character feels flat and/or done poorly, especially the females, which is funny considering they tried to make this non-sexist
3. They really made the worst changes in this show, removing Sokka's sexism, removing Katara's anger and stubborness, Aang's inability to prioritise Avatar things. Like no one is allowed to have flaws...
I really hope netflix continues this series. The story is a bit meh, they dumbed down everything from the original cartoon but the fight scenes are really promising! I hope season 2 they fix the story bits and improve more on the action scenes.

Okay, sidepoint, why is Aang trash-talking? And especially *Zuko*, who's demonstrated repeatedly he's exceedingly skilled as a fighter? And why is Zuko just letting him wander off? In the series, Aang is in the spirit world, disconnected from his body, and thus unable to defend himself, and has to be protected by Katara. Their fight is as much about position as it is about winning, because Katara has to be certain to keep Zuko out of reach of Aang. The stakes were much higher in series, and I'm not sure why they lowered them for a finale battle. As well, Zuko does look down on her as a peasant, but his "You found yourself a master" line was said from restraint, acknowledging her improvement. So what, Aang is just crappier because he was trained by the monks? And so are the Kyoshi Warriors, since they've spent their lives training? And can we please stop knocking women who actually, y'know, train?
And isn't this going to undercut TOPH, who is the one who is *actually* the self-taught one, learning from the badger moles? Like, you couldn't just wait HALF a season, it had to be the same for both of the girls?
This was the fight I couldn’t stand. Her being trained by Pakku was a defining moment for her in the series, she became a better water bender and grew as a character. But instead they change it to she’s her own master???? The complete disrespect they put on her character development just so she can have a girl power scene was so stupid.
