I'm from Minneapolis, and I watched as the City Fathers oversaw the systematic destruction of almost the entire downtown area in the name of 'urban renewal'. Anyone who thinks they remember 'Minneapolis' must have a long memory. It's gone. The 'Twin Cities' used to mean Minneapolis & St. Paul. Today it's an 11-county metro area covered with an ocean of asphalt & concrete. Tom Niessen was right about the demise of a better way of life.

It's the same every where. I went back to where I grew up a few yrs back and as far as I was concerned I could been in a different country. Back then you could drive five miles out of the city and it was all rural. Now it's homes and businesses wall to wall in that valley.

The "Airport" that Sheriff Roy Rogers is saving really did exsist !
It was formally know as the "Conejo Airport" and it was located between ( today ) East Thousand Oaks Blvd and the U.S. 101 / Ventura Freeway ( east to west ). The north / south boundery was Baker Ave to ( today ) the North bound On Ramp ( from Moorpark Ave. ) to the U.S. 101 .
The Conejo Airport was owned by the Janss Family and was used for ease of access for buyers, trainers, officials to the huge Janss Thoroughbred Farm starting in the late 1920's. Some "cottage" business sprang up due to the airport and Thoroughbred Farm including 1933 Kentucky Derby winner Don Meade's "Kentucky Derby Inn" which included a "Inn" ( Hotel), Picnic Grounds and "Plunge" ( pool ). Today, the location of the Janss Thoroughbred Horse Farm is "The Oaks" Shopping Mall and Jockey Meade's "Kentucky Derby Inn" is ( today ) where the Outback Restaurant sits.
The Janss Family also used the "first" Conejo Airport for their own, private, air transporation between the Conejo Ranch and development projects in Southern California. Within two years of the filming of "The Gay Ranchero", the State of California would build the "new" U.S. 101 Highway ( Ventura Freeway ) through the northern portion of the "first" Conejo Airport ( freeway completed in 1951 ).
This forced the Janss Family to relocate the Conejo Airport "west" on Ranch property due to the creation of an extension of Moorpark Blvd ( or California State Highway 23 ) to intersect with the new U.S. 101 ( right over the old Conejo Airport runway / landing aera ). The relocated Conejo Airport survived another 15 years until development progress forced the shut down.
By the mid 1960's, all of the land that was once the original Conejo Airport and Hangers had been developed into commercial property. All that remains are a few, original Oak Trees scattered within the parking lots just off Thousand Oaks Blvd that you see in this Roy Rogers Film.

Airplanes don't belong in westerns. Roy rides around the airport on his horse. Kinda corny.
