- Thai massage (Nuad Thai) is new to modern spas, but it is actually an ancient form of massage thought to have been developed by Buddhist monks in Thailand 2,500 years ago. It uses passive stretching and gentle pressure along the body’s energy lines to increase flexibility, relieve muscle and joint tension, and balance the body’s energy systems
The UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage has inscribed Nuad Thai, or traditional Thai massage, on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The decision was made at the 14th session of the committee, held in Bogotá, Republic of Colombia, from 9 to 14 December 2019. This is Thailand’s second inscription since the country ratified the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, or the 2003 UNESCO Convention.
