Great review very informative. I just wanted to say that I did purchase this rifle before watching this post over much debate on which single action 22lr I wanted to buy. I am very happy with the rifle it shoots very well both in the 22lr and the 22 WMR calibers. Everything about this rifle is quite unique. It is well built . The fit and finish is very good. The combination of a really kool rifle and the price can not be beat. I recommend this rifle to anyone who has the desire or need to own it. One thing I would like to share. Is when I was firing this rifle I put my support hand underneath the back of the stock near the sling swivel and my firing hand in a support position at the grip. I utilized the trigger guard hook as support for my firing hand. I found this position very accommodating. I could move my face further away from the cylinder flash and a much better support position and line of sight to fire from both at the bench sitting and standing unsupported firing positions. With practice this firing method is the way to go. Your keeping your support hand away from that cylinder flash as well. Just thought this might help someone in deciding whether or not to purchase. Lever action rifles in comparison do have rounds in the magazine as an advantage. Yet we all know what has to be done to reload the tube magazine vs the six round cylinder. Both the lever and revolver rifles are single action. One real advantage the cylinder has over the lever is you don't have to move all those parts to fire the rifle. You just haver to pull the hammer back and fire. Lever action 22lr is just that. Not a combination 22lr and 22 WMR of both with just a cylinder change. These cylinder's are very available at the Heritage web site in many different types, colors, engraving's. The 6 cylinder vs the 9 cylinder weapons are not interchangeable. 6 to 6 and 9 to 9. I think there was a TV series way back in the 90s entitled Lazarus which was portrayed by the late Robert Urich. In one episode, he used a Colt revolving carbine. I liked the rifle so I bought one, a brand new Uberti revolving carbine in .45 Colt with an 18 inch barrel and fixed sights. My crippling GunBroker addiction coupled with the affordable prices and seemingly limitless editions of the stalwart Rough Rider keep me engaged. 🤠
Really nice overview of this little rifle, and some sharp shooting to boot. Thanks for the video, Richard! I hope I can pick one of these carbines up myself.
How am I just finding out about this thing?!? It's such a cool little carbine! You say it's a range toy but I would absolutely take this rabbit/squirrel hunting and have a ball doing it. Heritage is a very underrated company.
Thank you for an excellent range presentation. I see so many useless videos that show the narrator shooting with no target/distance results. What good does it do to watch someone pull a trigger with no results. And being truthful about the safety device and use of plastic on the shell ejector shows tou are an honest man. Are these Heritage guns made in the USA? They sure are inexpensive, but 100 yd. results are amazing for a .22 rf.
Wow! Thank you for the kind words! I try to show all the relevant things I can and try to keep it interesting too. Yes, they are made in the USA, in Bainbridge, GA. Their manufacturing process, and material choice is what helps keep the prices down and they're pretty good firearms for the price. Thank you again for the kind words and thank you for watching!
Was commissioned by Ned Buntline for Colt to produce 4, one was given to Wyatt Earp, I appreciate the heads up. Am real glad to see Heritage has produced this gun, even if I'm a year or 2 late.
Have not seen one of these before. I do have one of the old Navy Arms revolving carbines based on the 1875 Remington in 357 Mag. Might have to get one of these to go with it.
You are correct in that. I took your statement to be a generalization of hand guns, not the movie. I saw on line a shoulder stock that held a pistol in a molded hand piece. There letter from the ATF said: since it does not attach, they consider it a rest. Interesting.
Small Caliber Arms Review I've had the revolver a few years, it seems this revolver carbine is a "gotta have" companion piece. PS, you look darn good in that suit!
I have this exact model and have a lot of fun with it. I tend to cross my left arm underneath it and hold my right elbow with my left hand. Then I rest my right hand on top of the crook of my left elbow. It makes a very stable platform to shoot from.
Just make sure not to get in the way of the gap between the cylinder and the forcing cone. Have fun and be safe, it's a fun little rifle. Thanks for watching!
Hey I really liked your video, it was very well put together. The only thing was that you let the hammer forward from the half cock position, this is a BIG NO for single action revolvers as it can mess up the timing leaving a groove on the cylinder. The proper procedure for laying the hammer down from any position is always to cock it all the way back before lowering it so the complete cycle of the action can occur. Just a friendly tip. Keep up the good videos!
I can never remember the title of that old Western film where one character carried a harmonica rifle. All I remember is that the guy would go through the loads in several of the "cylinders" and stop at the last chamber of the last cylinder to pull a small cigar out and strike a match to light it.
I will say this for Heritage Rough Riders. Their sear lock-work is very deliberate/positive and very audible. Every video on shooting these guns you can hear six very distinctive "clickclackstop..pews"
I shoot the Remington 1858 .44 revolving carbine. Very accurate at 50 yards and can hit a large bullseye @ 100 yards. I use X sticks or a Caldwell Lead Sled. I will be upgrading it to a .45 Colt cylinder for safer shooting without chain fire.
Love your bar/shed, especially when you did the barkeep video. Cool period outfits too. Great shooting. The one thing that turned me off on the revolving rifle was the guy in Lonesome Dove that had one. I guess it just shows how good of an actor he was.
I also like the revolving carbine. The price is not bad for a novelty gun. I'm sure they will go down a little after they have been out for a while. Thanks for the video.
I was at rual King the other day they had 2 of these and I put one in layaway and .my coworker grabbed the other thanks for posting plan on having mine out this coming weekend
Paid $120 for the 6 inch model was the the LR and Magnum cylinder used. Looks like it hasn't been fired much. My son will claim it in a few years when he is ready.
Hmm, so holding the barrel area is always a bad idea for any revolving carbine...? My favorite weapon of the Civil War is the Colt 1855 Revolving Carbine, and the engineer in me was looking at this Heritage Rancher and was screaming at me to fashion a custom wooden handguard for it, along with an extended ejector (so the handle can stick out of the handguard) made out of aluminum rather than the original plastic. But if it's dangerous to do so, I guess that's that project scrapped.
The Rossi Circuit Judge has a fore end on it and is a revolving carbine, there is a "Shield" to prevent your arm from getting hit by anything ejected out of the cylinder gap. It can and has been done, but I think it takes away from the look of the rifle.
El Dorado has a revolver rifle held by Arthur Hunnicutt's Bull, it is a more standard rifle size, but it is a cool little thing to separate him from the rest of the cast.
It wasn’t easy to find but I was able to track one of these down & I’m glad I bought it because it’s a fun little carbine revolver to shoot with both the 22LR & 22WMR cylinders. The only cons were some scratches on the barrel where it looks like whoever installed the barrel sling mount didn’t know what they were doing. The finish isn’t great either but considering how long I waited to find one & then how long it took KYGUNCO to ship it I got over it quickly once it was in my hands 😆.
I still haven't tried the .22WMRs in mine yet. For the price of the Heritage line, I can overlook a few things. They Function, they're Fun and they're (a)Ffordable. Thanks for watching!
I had a 686 that I carried on duty (early days) and I would get these black marks on my right thumb and fore finger. Myself and the range master could not figure where they were coming from. No pain no deformation on the skin. The range master was watching my grip and said he knew how and what was going on. We were carrying some hot fiocche .357. I was getting tattooed with lead that was shearing off on the forcing cone! I corrected my grip and the embedded lead pieces eventually went away.
That hook system on the leather strap is the old military type. Same color strap and brass plated hooks. Should have a leather loop about an inch wide you slide down over the two straps and by the hooks to keep them in place.
Question did you have any problems with the sights one video had a guy who bought one new and the front sights fell off and his rear was loose. Not sure why did you encounter this problem?
If you've ever fired a revolving carbine in 357 magnum, you know exactly why they never caught on. I'm really liking the idea of one in 22 magnum though.
@@SmallCaliberArmsReview more power to you. Shooting my uberti was just painful. Not only did it throw burning powder in your face but the concussion was like getting punched in the face.
Has Heritage said that the .22WMR can be shot out of the Rancher with the .22WMR cylinder? I assume that it could be I just have not seen anywhere that Heritage has said that. I have a Rough Rider that I bought with both cylinders and putting the .22WMR cylinder in a Rancher to complement the RR would really be cool! Also, one of the more iconic revolving rifles was carried by "Bull" Harris as played by Arthur Hunnicutt in 1966's "El Dorado" with John Wayne and Robert Mitchum. He carried an 1855 Colt Revolving Carbine.
Although I also could not find anything saying you can use .22WMR in it, I believe all Rough Riders come with the extra cylinder offer in the box. I could not find a good clip or still of Hunnicutt with the rifle. Thank you for watching!
Yeah, I think it would be safe to say the Rancher would be OK firing a .22WMR. I just was interested if Heritage had said anything about it.Re: Arthur Hunnicutt with the 1855 Colt Carbine. Here's the best one I could find:www.imfdb.org/images/thumb/7/73/El12.jpg/600px-El12.jpg

Nice rough rider rancher Richard. You know I just made this line up before the four of us going to the ok corral all right Mike Believue, Your Call Give Richard A Rough Rider Rancher They'll be less apt to get nerv-i-ous if he's on the street howitzer.
Heritages never made me take a second look because of that safety. This one, however is getting some serious consideration from me. A. Because it would be super easy to clean. B. The cylinder frame is aluminum as opposed to zinc alloy. C. I love cowboy guns.
I avoided them for years because of the safety......now I have 5 of them and I'm looking to get at least one more. These cowboy guns are just plain, simple, inexpensive F-U-N! Thank you for watching!
It would be a faster reload to just switch cylinders on the fly with a pre-loaded cylinder. I’d go to 22 magnum if I went to the expense of additional cylinders however. That goes for all the pistolas as well.
I agree, but then I have to carry extra cylinders. Oh yeah, magnums are a whole lot more fun, unfortunately, they're almost the same price as 9mm right now. I do have a couple magnum cylinders and they will swap between all of the Rough Riders of the same capacity. Thanks for watching!
I am from Merrie England for my sins. Back in the seventies there was a similar looking revolver available in the sporting (gun) press. It had a long barrel to comply with shotgun laws, it was calibred in only 9mm for shotgun use, thus making it more a rat gun than anything. From memory, I think it may well have had only a standard SA type butt. I tried looking for one some years back, but I got nowhere in tracking it down, so I guess they never caught on...!!!
I've seen a few 9mm shotguns over the years but never a revolving one. They were referred to as "garden guns" over here, the problem is the ammo is very rare here. Thank you for watching!
Yes. I already have the 4 1/2" pistol with both cylinders. Or I can run .22lr in both same way many people ran same ammo in their pistol and rifle in their carbine in cowboy days. Cylinder swap only takes a few seconds if you need a little extra oomph for coyotes for example.
@Federico Delgado they aren't "fit" to the gun they came with, that's why they can sell additional cylinders on the website. The manufacturing tolerances are pretty good, at least for what they are.
It seems to me, there is no reason why they couldn't put on a shield in front of the forward edge of the cylinder to catch any fragments from the discharging round. A 3/32" thick shield just a slight size larger I circumference attached to the barrel should do it. If you want to mask it, make it a part of a forearm. Just don't grab it at the gap. What do you think?
It would take away from the classic look a little bit but I'm sure something could be done, there are modern revolving rifles with a forward grips. Thank you for watching!
I need to try some of the .22 shot shells one of these days, I hear they make for good pest control. Thanks for the compliment and thanks for watching!
.22lr and .22wmr CCI or Federal crimped end shotshells work great. I prefer .22lr for mice and young rats. Barely even scratches my hardwood floors and laminate counter. .22WMR works better for large rats. With the longer barrel of the ranger should get a little more velocity. I get a usable pattern density up to 10 feet with the pistol. About 15 feet with my Savage MK II bolt action rifle.
@@michaelanderson1859 have you tried the shotshells with the blue plastic tip? I bought some years ago but haven't fired one yet. Kind of wondering what their effective range is.
@@SmallCaliberArmsReview CCI shotshells? I have them in .22lr #12 shot 1000fps 31 grains and .22WMR #12 shot 1000fps 52 grains. .22lr works great on mice and juvenile rats. .22WMR works much better on large rats. I barely winged one as he dove behind my stove. Left a blood splatter. He decided to leave my house and never come back. I haven't seen a sign of any other rats since I shot him. Your saloon and outfit is perfect. You look ready for cowboy action shooting now. Maybe Wheelgun Richard😄😂😂. But seriously good job and some 100 yard shots was dead on👍👍🇺🇸

22lr lever guns are super fun.
I bought the Rancher to add to my growing Heritage collection. It's shipping to my FFL right now, and I have the bronze .22WMR cylinder right here waiting. My crippling GunBroker addiction coupled with the affordable prices and seemingly limitless editions of the stalwart Rough Rider keep me engaged. 🤠

I fired a Rossi .38/357 rifle in that configuration at a range in Arizona! Nice to know someone is making a rimfire!

They're lots of fun! Thanks for the compliment and thanks for watching!
How am I just finding out about this thing?!? It's such a cool little carbine! You say it's a range toy but I would absolutely take this rabbit/squirrel hunting and have a ball doing it. Heritage is a very underrated company.
Yes, that would be a great choice for small game.
My wife bought me a Heritage 6 inch 20 years ago. I’ve got Glocks, 1911s, Smiths....guess which one I shoot the most😃
Sometimes it's the simple things that are the most fun. Thanks for watching!
.22lr is too cheap not to shoot it.
About like me I’ve got many nice semi autos ! Carry a snub nose revolver ever day also
Thank you for an excellent range presentation.
Thanks so much for this review! It was great. Hard to find reviews of unique guns!
You're welcome! Sometimes it's hard to get a hold of unique guns to review! Thank you for watching!
Was commissioned by Ned Buntline for Colt to produce 4, one was given to Wyatt Earp, I appreciate the heads up. Am real glad to see Heritage has produced this gun, even if I'm a year or 2 late.
Cimarron makes a copy of the Wyatt Earp Buntline in their "Hollywood" Series, it has the silver plaque on the right side grip.
Have not seen one of these before. I do have one of the old Navy Arms revolving carbines based on the 1875 Remington in 357 Mag. Might have to get one of these to go with it.
Before all this lock down stuff, I started seeing them on the shelves pretty regularly.
I own the Heritage Rough Rider 6in Revolver This looks like its fun to shoot. and Is a Nice addition to a 22 cal collection,Good Video BTW Cheers !!

You are correct in that. I took your statement to be a generalization of hand guns, not the movie. I saw on line a shoulder stock that held a pistol in a molded hand piece. There letter from the ATF said: since it does not attach, they consider it a rest. Interesting.
ATF, go figure!
NICE! Proud to say these are made down the road from me in Bainbridge Georgia (not Miami), love there handguns too.
I've heard they had moved? I wonder if the headquarters will remain in Miami?
Thats cool. I live on a street named Bainbridge Ave in Florida. And SCCY pistols are mfg in Daytona Beach FL.
This is the first I've seen of these...guess when I see it in person I'm buying one. Good video, my thanks for showing this gun exists!

Great video I love their Rough Ryder revolvers looking to get the one with the 14-16 inch barrel sometime. They are a good value for the money.
I agree, thanks for watching!
Great review ! Thinking about getting me one of those
They're pretty fun guns!
I’m going to have to get one of those, I love your outfit too you look very sharp.
Thank You very much!
Thank you and thanks for the Tip, I will keep that in mind. Thanks for watching and I hope you subscribed!
Fun video, I haven't seen this rifle before. Great job as always!
There were a few that shipped just before Christmas but they've been just like hens teeth! Thanks for the comment!
Very good review
Glad you enjoyed it!
I can never remember the title of that old Western film where one character carried a harmonica rifle. All I remember is that the guy would go through the loads in several of the "cylinders" and stop at the last chamber of the last cylinder to pull a small cigar out and strike a match to light it.
I have not seen the movie but, doing a search, I think it may have been "Adio, Sabata"?
I will say this for Heritage Rough Riders. Their sear lock-work is very deliberate/positive and very audible. Every video on shooting these guns you can hear six very distinctive "clickclackstop..pews"
That adds to the "Dramatic" effect! Thanks for Watching!
Thanks for sharing. Heritage Manufacturing firearms are a great value.
I agree! Thanks for watching!
This would be a really fun rabbit gun. Probably not the most practical option, but you’d feel so cool.

yea, I Hope that Heritage comes out with a .32 H&R Mag. later. It would be a great coyote ranch gun.
Say! That would be nice!
I need to pick one up myself! Thanks for watching!
Why do I immediately like this fella?
I don't know but keep watching please! Lol
Let's not forget "Bull" (Arthur Hunnicutt) in El Dorado... He played Marching Through Georgia with his revolving carbine, shooting the church bells. 🤣
LOL, I haven't seen that in years, I just may have to watch it again!
Wow what a beautiful weapon!!
and fun too!
Love your bar/shed, especially when you did the barkeep video. Cool period outfits too. Great shooting. The one thing that turned me off on the revolving rifle was the guy in Lonesome Dove that had one. I guess it just shows how good of an actor he was.

Good choice for teaching new shooters about revolvers. Thanks for watching!
What a cool rifle. First time seeing this. Thanks!
If you like revolving carbines, this one is both fun and affordable!
Like it, I'm hoping to get one, thanks for the video.
If you like revolving carbines, and inexpensive shooting, you'll like this one! Thanks for watching!
It does look like it would be a lot of fun.I'm going to hold off for a little while, hopefully the price will come down.

I also thank the algorithm for bringing you here! Lol
El Dorado has a revolver rifle held by Arthur Hunnicutt's Bull, it is a more standard rifle size, but it is a cool little thing to separate him from the rest of the cast.
Yes! I'd love to have one of those too!
Another fine firearm to add to the Heritage scam!! Looks like I might have to join you. Great video as always!
They'll get ya!
I just got my Heritage carbine yesterday. I also noticed the small scratches on the barrel of mine.
Sweet getup brother! And great shootin'!
Thank You!
The cylinder gap can get ya! Thanks for watching!
Where did you find yours?
I have been looking for one since I first saw it at the SHOT Show but have come up empty.
Nice Vid :-)
I picked mine up at Vance Outdoors in Ohio. Thanks for the compliment!
That hook system on the leather strap is the old military type. Same color strap and brass plated hooks. Should have a leather loop about an inch wide you slide down over the two straps and by the hooks to keep them in place.
After making this video, I started seeing the same hook setup in different places, I guess i just never paid attention before. Thanks for watching!
Nice I want one. Do you think they may build some in 357/.38 sol. That would be the way to go. Good video thanks
There's an idea, Heritage does make larger caliber pistols, it wouldn't be that hard to make a longer barrel and buttstock for one!
@@SmallCaliberArmsReview it shouldnt take long. Probably already in the works

Lol, the worst facial hair style I have ever had!
I have also figured out if you have the bartender revolver you can switch out the cylinders for 22 magnum
Yes, all of the heritage revolvers cylinders will interchange, as long as they are the same capacity. (6 rounds)
Need to put out the 9 shot version.
I contacted them to see if there was one in the future, they said not yet but that could change at any time. Thanks for watching!

If you've ever fired a revolving carbine in 357 magnum, you know exactly why they never caught on.
I'm really liking the idea of one in 22 magnum though.
I plan on picking one up in both 45 Colt and .44 black powder.

AWESOME ! Thank you for a super duper video ..... Looks like I found my next fun gun :-)
Fun little Plinkin' rifle!
Thank you for watching!
the salem lakes armory stock is nicer and you can go back and forth between pistol and rifle AND its easier to get and cheaper

If it’s the same frame as the other revolvers could you just drop a .22 mag cylinder in I know they don’t ship with one
Yes, the .22 mag cylinder will work in the Rancher.
Super cool rifle love it
They are pretty neat. Thanks for watching!
Great review

That’s perfect for pest control, great video!
@@SmallCaliberArmsReview CCI shotshells?

.22lr works great on mice and juvenile rats. .22WMR works much better on large rats. I barely winged one as he dove behind my stove. Left a blood splatter. He decided to leave my house and never come back. I haven't seen a sign of any other rats since I shot him. Apparently the word is out in the rat community. Stay away from that guys house. Hes a lunatic😅 I have shot large rats from as far as 15 ft with excellent results last year. Jumped 2 feet in the air and dead by the time he hit ground.
