UCC star Phil Healy “came from the depths of hell” to claim a thrilling victory in the women’s 4x400m relay at the Irish Universities Track and Field Championships in Santry last weekend.
The Cork college looked to be way out of contention when Healy took the baton on for the anchor leg in fifth position of seven runners. UCD looked to be in command with just 400m to go, leading UL by 30m and CIT a further 5m in arrears.
But in an incredible final lap, as commentators Ronan Duggan and Cathal Dennehy considered the race for second place as the only one worth watching, UL’s Michelle Finn reeled in the leader with almost 200m to spare and looked certain to snatch gold for Limerick.
However, as she began to fade, Healy, summoning every last ounce of energy, stormed down the outside to pip Finn at the line in the most dramatic of circumstances.
The 21-year-old Irish international sprinter from Bandon AC had previously won the women’s 200m at the meeting in 23.93 and she fell over the line after the exhausting effort, to the delight of two ecstatic, and increasingly high-pitched, commentators.

Sadly the IAA stupidly dropped them the day before the commentary of the Nationals this year leaving 2 muppets to fill in. Shocking stuff considering these 2 were our finest

Cathal Dennehy (depths of hell guy) was on the Dan Patrick show this morning talking about the race/call. Epic radio. He tells Dan, ya we pretty much lost our minds, our composure, our professionalism.. Definitely worth a listen.
Did he happen to mention did that other girl wear them heels after.

The first time the girl that eventually wins the race enters the SCREEN is at 3:38 or so, and she's around 50 meters behind with the leader only having about 200 meters left to run. I've never seen anything like this.

I love that commentary of "Coming from the depths of Hell". That was a very vivid description of just how much distance she had to make-up. This young lady really overcame some serious distance to obtain this team win. She believed in herself and never quit and that faith had her standing on the winner's podium. There is a movie in this story.
University College Cork nursing student Phil Healy, quoted in the Irish Examiner: "It was crazy because we didn’t expect to win and I only decided to run 20 minutes before the event. I had ran (sic) in the 100 and 200 metres and one of the girls just asked would I fill in on the last leg and I said 'throw me in and I’ll see what I can do'".
That's future olympian Phil Healy; did the other "future olympian" Michelle Finn (sp?) make it?
@@raygordonteacheschess5501 Yep, she ran for Ireland in the 3,000 metres steeplechase at the Summer Olympics in Rio in 2016 finishing 11th in her heat.

Whatever you think, I still believe it is one of the most impressive comebacks ever (with Floria Guei in an other 4x400m).
After spending wayyyyyy too much time watching the video dozens of times, I calculated her split time to be between 52"5 and 54".
I don't know how old she was at the time but since then, she got the 100 m and 200 m Irish records and she has also run the 400m in around 52s.
As far as I know, she's on her way to the Olympics next summer (while studying/working as a nurse), so kudos to you Phil !!!
To be sure the girl who won had one heck of a leg coming back from "the depth of hell" and giving it all! What a performance for her team!

"From the depths of hell" has to be the best commentary I have heard in a while.
The 400m takes pure grit and shows your true colors. I can say that even though i'm in excruciating pain it is one of my favorites races, along with the 200m.
The most amazing thing is there were no more than 200 people watching this live and yet they were so into it.
1. Incredible finish to go from almost last place to first! 2. Wow, I feel terrible for the girl in yellow going from first in a ginormous lead to dead last.
+ChristophProbst There were seven teams, and Phil Healy (girl in red) went from fifth to first, and the girl in yellow went from first to fifth. So neither of them were ever "dead last".

Brilliant race (from all 28 athletes) including the fabulous commentary. This is what athletics should be all about - everyone giving it their all. Yes, it's not a time to set the world on fire, but who cares? Everyone's clean and determined to win and the race is unbelievably entertaining. I've watched this with my kids a hundred times and we've loved every second, including the honest and fun commentary. You can take your Olympics and shove it up your arse as far as I'm concerned. Kudos.

Amazing race and Amazing commentating!
Bloody hell that was an amazing finish. reminds me of the stories my Uncle used to tell me when he raced against Rodger Bannister in Dublin that after doing a full days work, then cycled 10 miles to Race him and caught up with him at the last moment after been so far behind for most of the race. It is this kind of athlete who deserves all the credit, Phil was amazing and zero ego but 100% focus on what was needed at each step. my Uncle used to say ignore the finish line and who is infront, but run each step as fast as you can to catch the one in front and the rest will happen! Amazing and I hope she goes real far!

I used to run the 400m back at high school. It is HELL on the track, for sure......
+Mark Dowse Same, used to run for district 100/200m and had to fill in for 400m few times, was not my race and used to go out to hard and suffer in the home straight lol

What really makes this amazing to watch is that the cadence of the two announcers just keeps going up and up and faster and faster as they near the finish. I wonder what Healy's split was.

A bit of research showed that this is a team event, where the universities gather points from the events, so they will participate in a relay even if they have no four specialized runners. So the girl first in the lead is apparently a 3000m specialist and not really a sprinter. (Then again, so is the first to overtake her, 3000m steeplechase even). And Phil Healy, the 4th runner in the winning team, is - but 200m, which is very different from 400m, and she clearly proves the adage that the human body can gather enough air for 400m but not for 401.
Her start was fine. She couldn't finish.

Frightening thing is Phil Healy isn't even a 400m runner, she's a 100m and 200m specialist. Incredible speed endurance for a short sprint athlete.
If that's true the frightening aspect is she hasn't figured out the 400 is her best opportunity. More margin for error. Plus her form looked very good, pumping her arms throughout, as someone else mentioned. Healy would only have to improve a couple of seconds from this effort to be reasonably competitive on the international level. Olympic qualifying heats are often won with times in the low to mid 51 seconds. At the 100 and 200 level you have to be freakish fast.
Wasted Century Phil Healy set a WL time of 52.04 last week. Not bad for someone who until 2 years ago was a short sprint specialist. Have a feeling she will stick to the 200m and 400m from now on.

Dan Patrick had this announcer on his radio show. Pretty cool about the whole thing. Not usually an announcer, he is mostly a writer. Funny ending for sure.

+SniffyPoo - no, as the commentary said she's a 1,500 metre Steeplechase runner. What people don't know is that she had just run the 1,500 metre Steeplechase before that relay - hence her fatigue.
guess this is why we dont see people try to double in those 2 events...
