“We want immediate divestment from Israeli companies, from international companies on the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) list and from fossil fuels full stop. It is past time for the university to take a stand for justice and invest in the people that makes this university what it is.”

    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Cat Adams, The Ohio State University student, Ohio Youth for Climate Justice:
“Today, we’re going to have some speakers who are going to talk about climate justice and Palestinian liberation. The university has made it very clear that they will not tolerance for any sounds because it’s finals week and so we’re being forced to readjust our plans and create sort of a community space in which all of the people who have gathered here today are able to talk about what they want OSU to look like and how they want our money to be invested.”

    11. SOUNDBITE (English) Sumaya Hamadmad, researcher and graduate student at The Ohio State University:
“Anti-Zionism is not anti-Judaism. Being anti-Zionist is not antisemitic. Those two do not equate each other and we really have to make this clear for the public and for the students and for everyone who is hijacking our words and our intentions basically.”

    13. SOUNDBITE (English) Abdihamid (declined to give last name), The Ohio State University student:
“Just sharing, these, these, these stories and these voices, that is resistance. And that’s what, what we are, we’re fighting so hard to get other people to understand. We cannot accept OSU profiteering off of human rights violations that only dehumanize Palestinians and kill them and beat them and humiliate them.”

    STORYLINE:
U.S. colleges and universities are preparing for end-of-year commencement ceremonies with a unique challenge: providing safety for graduates while honoring the free speech rights of students involved in protests over the Israel-Hamas war.
Since the conflict began, colleges and universities have struggled to maintain a balance between security and civil liberties amid intense student debate and protests.
Many schools that tolerated protests and other disruptions for months are now doling out more heavy-handed discipline.
At The Ohio State University, protesters in support of the Palestinians gathered on campus to share stories about their connections to the Palestinians territories and demand that the university disclose its financial investments in companies linked to Israel.
“We cannot accept OSU profiteering off of human rights violations that only dehumanize Palestinians and kill them and beat them and humiliate them,” Abdihamid, a student at the university who declined to give his last name to The Associated Press said.
