The ottavino has the density, timbre, intensity, and tonal quality of a soprano singer while the normal instrument has the density, timbre, intensity, and tonal quality of a tenor singer! Both keyboards sound together as if they were mother and child!!!!!
A virginal is a small string keyboard instrument that plucks the strings like a harpsichord. I never saw one but I heard plenty on recordings. I took music history in college. I would love to build one of these instruments. I tuned a double manual for my college piano teacher. She was good to me when I was on academic suspension. I only found out I was dyslexic in my jr year in college. So failing academically was not new to me. Enough of my early college years. I did go into electronics with help from an educational psychologist who tested me for dyslexia. Shame on my highschool for not knowing the signs. I took the same test in Grammer school. 73
@justspectator9963 It's not a clavicord, clavichords strike the strings whereas harpsichords pluck the strings, a virginal is simply a small/compact harpsichord
It's amazing what people invented way back when!! And one just doesn't sit right down and play something like that. I'm a testament to that because I'm a beginner at the piano 🎹 It takes almost a lifetime of practice and practice and learning to play like that!! Bravo 👏🏻
There are other Mother-and-Child virginals called Muselars with the Mother keyboard to the right, which produces are deep resonant sound because the plucking point is farther away from the hitch pins on the left allowing the strings to vibrate more freely.
Inside this extremely plain wooden box are two magnificent instruments with beautiful embellishments, interesting that the baby is coupled like a pump organ Has couplers! Ingenious!!👍👍👏👏👏
I just saw another pianist playing this and wondered about it. He was playing ‘The Frogge Galliard” by John Dowland, which was perfect on this instrument. Thank you soo much for displaying it for us. It is one of the most beautiful pieces of art I’ve seen. ⚜️🌷🌱
What genius! Tucking in that other higher pitched piece to the side then making it play automatically with correct placement on top. Sheer genius. Exquisite artwork all over. Such a joy to hear. I'm going to see this in Brussels when I visit. Merci!
I have never seen this ever before. It is an amazing harpsichord and the fact that you pull out of a compartment on the harpsichord another smaller keyboard allows you to couple the notes played below. What an incredible and enjoyable performance and I hope you have more in the future. Best regards Patrick. of Canada.
making one of these from scratch or a kit appears to be my only option.. anyone know of companies marketing the mother-and-child styles? seems like only antiques are available. I make dungeon synth for a living, and this is something I would use every day.
Some people say this is genius. I agree it’s genius. But that’s a nuanced term. It depends to what extent this feature was utilized or how much it was wanted. I mean I don’t hear as many praises for the invention AND the gradual steps in improvement of the “piano” from clavichord(or whatever was the earliest version) to the modern non electronic piano. Although arguable electronic synthesizers are as much “genius” as the piano itself. It’s just that we have accepted some of these inventions and take them for granted so we tend not to be surprised by them as we are by this piano “mother child” expansion option.
It's "coupled" with the lower keyboard. When the jack rail is removed @ 0:44 you can see the "jacks", the things that pluck the strings. When the "child" is placed on top of these jacks, the bottom of the child keyboard has openings so when the jacks from the "mother" rise up when the mother keys are pressed, the mother jacks also push up the "child" keys, and also the jacks. This is difficult to visualize if you don't know the harpsichord mechanism for double keyboards, but you can Google it and see diagrams. Sadly, none exist for Mother-and-Child virginals.
@@hori166 They're working on it. They should have an extended range version & also versions with more keys as well as the 8 ft etc. I'd love to add a pickup to mine so I can play through an amp.

I can see how a harpsichord would be jealous of this small instrument with more harpsichord sound than a harpsichord
@justspectator9963 I know that. The title says virginal, not harpsichord or clavichord

A USUAL harpsichord might become jealous but not a Ruckers one. ;-)
Pure genius in engineering, breathtaking crafmanship and beautiful sound!
what a cute, genius invention
The Soprano Virginal (top one) is adorable & high pitched.

When they pulled the tiny one out of the bigger virginal I almost lost my shit permanently.
Me too, but then when they played the larger one and the smaller one played itself at the same time I died
Omg what a noble instrument. And the intricate design on it. It's so fascinating.
I’m in love. Until I think about having to tune it. Then I cry.
How beautiful this is though.
It’s like a Russian nesting doll. The small piano may as well have another one come out from it.

Yeah, I love those too
They probably sound closer to a guitar, don't they?

What a unique instrument! I’ve never seen one quite like this.❤
I gave this a like simply for the amazing sound it made when the lid was opened, and of course the instrument(s) are fantastic too!
Amazing workmanship and tone!

This is a serious ever lasting high stander good impression instrument 💚
Que placer escuchar la musica esa joya. Felicidades a la maestra que ejecuta.
this video blew my mind
FANTASTIC!!
1:18 When both instruments are played together, the sound falls in between a Harpsichord & a Bandoneon.
that's because it's out of tune... it would just sound like a virginal with a 4'.
@@gambe96 Bandoneons usually have an 8' & 4' rank of reeds so this virginal works great for Tango music.
0:42 The jack rail comes off & you can see the Plectrums that strum the strings when you hit the keys.
¡Maravilloso, hermoso!...

Magnifique!

Why isn't the front cover detachable? Isn't it in the way of your legs?

Cool! And having a harpsichord I must tune relentlessly, I can imagine how it must be to tune this double keyboard.
Thank you..👌
It's such a gorgeous thing. What year was it made?
The way the top one moves along with the main keyboard, it looks like you’re playing a duet with a ghost.
