In 1781 AD, Maharaja Marthanda Varma visited the King of Odanad and returned by boat. It is believed that a goddess' spirit appeared at the site of the temple today and then sank into the sea.The sleeping king went to the place where the divine spirit was found and realized that the divine spirit was there. He later built a palace for frequent visitors and to rest when he arrived here. Thus the place came to be known as Kottarakkadavu.
They once traveled to Alappuzha via the present day TS Canal. The purpose of the trip was to purchase fertilizers for agricultural purposes. On the way to Champakulam, they saw a girl crying. After comforting her he went ahead but he felt a love for her.The girl was still crying when they returned with the manure. He picked her up and she grew up on the couch. Later, a temple dedicated to the Goddess was erected here.
