85k over budget is pretty tough coming from the company that made the darn thing. Expected from an auto shop that perhaps doesn't have as much experience on your car as they do others but in this case unacceptable. Considering the cost of overall to start with. For the price of an overhaul + bonus 85k + if they had just sold the r44 = probably pretty damn close to a 0hr brand new aircraft. Sure it looks new, but it isn't. Greasy, just greasy. We overhauled one ship last year and are overhauling three ships this year. Field overhauls are significantly cheaper and faster (depending on how fast a kit can ship and where you're getting an engine from). The reason you get a perfect ship from Robinson is the same reason it's so damn expensive. I can see every 4400 hour being done at the factory but I would never do a 2200 hour at the factory.
It’s cheaper to sell your core and just buy a new heli with 0 hrs

$85,000 over budget, they should have at least phoned you to let you know what was going on. For $85,000 over budget it better look like a brand new Chopper.
I know this is years late, but seeing you fly along the west coast next to LA made me giddy. I switched over to helicopters to fly aerial cinematography, hopefully in Hollywood among other places around the world. Seeing that view just pumped me up so much. I've been at this journey for over a couple years now and wasn't really getting burnt out, but I've definitely been questioning my transition over to rotary because of the more difficult job market and tremendously lower income.

I delivered airplanes from the Cessna factory for the US Air Force Auxiliary. They paid extra for the cloth interior because they felt tax payers would think it bad if they had the factory leather interior.

85g's over no way! My video would be in front of that factory talking about how an estimate from the company who makes the helicopter can be that far off. That's a scam if I've ever seen it. Might check eith the terrible state of California to see if that's an up or down way to operate there.

RHC designed and manufactured that R44, together with it's Overhaul Life Cycle and Schedule of Works, and they calculated the list of replacement parts required to bring it back to Zero Timed status!
Consequently, when they carry out an inspection to create a 2200 Hour overhaul quotation it should be both honest and accurate!
The work to create that quotation was neither honest, accurate nor competent, and certainly not "absolutely immaculately amazing"!
As for the standard of work they carried out, you are simply receiving the minimum acceptable standard of workmanship, particularly for the grossly excessive price you were compelled to pay!
This is exactly how you should receive your Zero Timed R44 from RHC, a machine worked on, prepared and presented to an acceptable standard of workmanship and in a clean condition!
A cynic may say that screwing the trusting owner out of an additional $85000 above the cost of their written quotation was absolutely immaculately amazing work by their Billing Department!
However, the only opinion that matters is that of the bill paying owner, not some Internet observer!

I wonder since they are doing repair if they are licensed by the california department of consumer affairs. As they have strict rules on estimates and customer approvals on additional costs.
Would like to have heard a cost comparison of the Robinson versus the Cabri for overhaul? Knowing Cabir's approach to life cycle is different from Robinson, I though it might be interesting.

Maria over over on the FlyingMair channel said this same thing about a Robinson factory overhaul. They'll strip the aircraft completely and rebuild it from the ground up and if they discover anything they will replace it regardless. You basically get a new aircraft back. She won't use Robinson for overhaul. She has a Robinson approved mechanic she trusts and has used him for years.
It looks amazing Mischa! How many hours flying was it from Torrance to Abbotsford? Absolutely love Highway 1 up the Pacific Coast and San Francisco and the Bay Area. Good luck with the 'new' R44 and hope that that overspend on the overhaul doesn't affect your profitability on the aircraft too much as $38.4 dollars per hour seems a steep additional cost over Robinson's estimate for reserve of $105.50 per hour (assuming 2200 hours) for overhaul and significantly more than what you'd budgeted for.
How did you get across the border? Was in considered essential travel?

By the way....it's similar on some of the jets I fly. They quote $750k for a certain check.....everyone knows you budget $1m....and never see change....however....it's normally over the $1m mark and they have to flex and give a bit back. Make them sharpen that pencil.....!!

What was the quote? Was this a 30% or a 5% 'error' ? And was the newer avionics an option?
It makes me wonder if it's even the same helicopter. Just take a new one off the line, paint it orange and put the old serial numbers on it. (edit:also just slide the old seats onto the new heli after wiping some armorall on 'em)

@Pilot Yellow, I am curious. How much, if any, power do you lose from flying over land to flying over water? I imagine there is less surface heat coming from the water than the ground so I imagine that would create less lift? Love seeing you and Reuben together! Missed his face. Can you give us the thought process on Orange as the colour choice? As a business how can you budget for the over run and based on this given the choice would you now have purchased new?
Well Charles Lindbergh had his aircraft painted orange and black which he said were the most visible colours in varying light conditions,used together they look great,but singular orange of that intensity looks stunning and easier to find in any search.

Hey Misch....! Sorry, but 85k ON TOP is incredible for an over spend....way to much and that would have severely soured my own experience, no doubt. I get that things have to be right and I for one, would want them to be right, but that's simply OTT for going over budget. it's like 30% over budget or something? WOW!! My Guess is approximately 300 K
Frank Porcaro - I’m waiting to get a 12 year overhaul done and looking at $120K for the basics. My guess is anything between 200 and 300. Must have been one hell of phone call to update BC Hel on the price 😂
Frank Porcaro - $300k is pretty close, I am just out of a 12 year field overhaul a few months ago and it was in the $240k range and we did not repaint or do the interior. So in this case, it pretty safe that they were easily in the $325-400 range. Given that brand new this machine is close to $600k now....

I don't agree at all. When a company gives you a quote, it is based on their experience in that area and that quote must be adhered to with a set (contractual) percentage in deviation from that quote. You didn't mention what the original quote was so that makes it a little more difficult but $85,000.00 MORE than the original quote is outrageous and the company should have been contractually obligated to take some of that expensive error on their part for the mistake in the quotation.
I have to disagree with you, theres no way they can accurately quote an overhaul before they actually pull the machine apart and see the actual state its in. Its just how aircraft are, when we pull them apart sometimes we find things that are broken and NEED to be fixed before it can go back to service and that have absolutely nothing to do with the reason the aircraft is in the hangar in the first place. Mechanics aren't magic genies we can't put our hand on the aircraft and tell you exactly what everythings going to cost lol
Especially with overhauls, maybe something they found was just waaay out of dimension that wasn't due for replacement for another x amount of years or hours and it had to be repalced right away, that'll unfortunately add to the original quote because its neccessary to replace to make the aircraft safe for flight again.

You apparently had no representation on site while it was there. Just sauntered in when it was all done and waited for them to hand you the invoice. Having a white hat and daily pre-work calls is always worth it.

Infinity & Beyond Robinson Aircraft are every 2200 hours or 12 years, whichever comes first.

What are quotes for, when they can step over not by a couple of 100 bucks but by 85k!
They could have given them the: „Why don‘t we just surprise you with a nice little sum when you pick up your heli after an unreasonable amount of time? And don‘t forget to sign over your account to us!“
How can you justify that kind of money for a „service pit stop“ as compared to just selling it and buying a new one? Could you please make a video where you compare the cost vs. return? And please figure in the time that you could not use the heli to earn money with it. This is not a toy but a production tool for your business!

What a major disappointment this turned out to be. Not providing real numbers, (other than unexpected $85k which is rather meaningless when you don't have ALL the #s which he indicated he would provide at the end) as in rebuild vs new, income lost during 6 mos+ rebuild, etc etc. In for a penny, in for a pound, if you're going to do it, do it right....not half assed. I've forgotten why I unsubscribed from this channel but this just reinforces that decision.
