  • The classic Brill-built Bullet cars were still running all out on the Norristown High Speed Line and PCC's were rolling on the classic Germantown streetcar route in the this VHS clip circa 1990. It is Philly transit as it was back then. Eagles eyes will note some interior and exterior shots of #206, which is now on display at the Electric City Trolley Museum in Scranton, PA adjacent to the Steamtown National Historic Site.

In the 60s those Bullets were a LOT faster.
Hell, even the air compressors ran at breakneck speed.

I was on one driven by the legendary Al Ricketts that topped out just south of 85 mph. The N-5s are capable of 75 but have been dumbed down to 55 in the interest of safety. What used to be 22 min end to end is now 30-32 mins.

Thanks for posting this! Operator on #205 looks like the late Alan Ricketts. Car #205 still runs occasionally at Rockhill Trolley Museum roughly 3 hours west of Upper Darby.

So sad that all the rolling stock from when America use to actually make things is pretty much retired by now.

Don't forget GM was at the helm. I heard they were fined something like $5000 for their crimes. Ooohhh, painful!

Ever since I was a little kid I always thought of becoming a streetcar trolley driver but don't live in an area where they have them. I wonder if anyone ever hijacked one of these.

Yes, they were "hijacked" in a sad way: by the bus lobbyists of General Motors and the Firestone tire manufacturers. If you come across a book called "Mule to Marta" you can read of how the remaining Atlanta electric trolley coaches were "hijacked" when a bus tycoon became friends with the Mayor, resulting in the dismantling of the trolley coaches in 1964 or 1965 for their personal profits..

That's not Germantown. Germantown is in the city. the Norristown Highspeed Line runs totally outside the city limits.

Kevin Howard it’s all good! I appreciate you watching the video. I wish I had more! Philly was a heck of a place for traction fans back then.

Those are not PCCs, they are ex-CTA 6000s

Your on point. People call those CTA cars PCCs because it was made by the same company St. Louis Car Company. Many folk hve no understanding that PCC stands for Presidents’ Conference Committee.

This video features PCC cars (you need to watch the whole video) but is otherwise mostly Brill cars on the Norristown line, hence why they are called out in the title. A couple of CTA 6000's make a cameo, but I was never much of a fan of those. Give me a little credit, I can tell the difference between an "L" car and a PCC (and I even know how PCC's got their name). ;-)

In a way you're both right. Even though they were rapid-transit cars, the 6000s were designed to use streetcar technology. About 500 of the cars actually included parts that were recycled from scrapped PCCs. According to CERA, that included trucks, electric traction motors, electrical components, seats, stanchions, and window mechanisms.

Rob you have my credit for uploading this amazing video. It show full detail how the Brills Drive on the line. The PCC are on the video bring back memories when I was little riding the 23 school. Thanks for the Upload
