I just retired (second time!) at age 72. Finally have the time to pursue my Private License! My brother-in-law in, LaJolla, Ca., is a retired America West Captain and he and his many friends own unbelievable planes that we have access to hangered at Montgomery Field in San Diego. Only problem is, I reside in New York City. I plan on starting my training at Mid Island Air Service based at McArthur Airport in Long Island and, now that I have the time, do some flying in California and being a part of their gracious flying community. My only hope is that I have a flying instructor who emulates Captain Scott and my brother-in-law, who reminds me of Captain Scott! I am grateful for the effort Captain Scott has expended on behalf of all aspiring pilots and raising the bar for all CFIs to achieve!

Even after years of flying and hundreds of hours in the log book it is still good to take a refresher course like these videos because sloppyness creeps in and there are just always a few things that have been forgotten.

Hello Captain Scott. I have been riveted to your tutorials, you explain manoeuvres clearly, you make it fun. The area looks awesome. Here in U.K. we only dream of 5mph clear sunny weather. Getting back into Flying after a 3year break. Managed a solo in a PA28, total airtime 17hrs, therefore watching all you instructional vids again, there’re great refresher tools. I googled Useless Bay, Wow, what a terrific area.
All the very best, and thanks. Respect.

I took flying lessons years ago, passed the FAA written, only had a couple of cross country flights left and pretty much ran out of money, so I stopped with about 40 hours on my log book. Watching your video's brought back some great memories and also, make me realize some things that weren't taught to me, but were more, shown to me, if that makes sense. Your videos are really good, such as you explain why, you add power, why you decrease power for speed. I wish I had you as my instructor back then.....

I have been wanting to fly my whole life and thought about it very hard when I graduated high school. There is no history of aviation in my family but something attracted me to wanting to fly. It never really happened because of financing. I came from a lower middle class income family with 3 kids, one of them being special needs. I grew up and forgot those dreams.
I will be 40 this year and I have been doing research for almost 2 months now. I have been watching different youtube videos, looking into local flight schools to do a discovery flight and saving money to finally get the hours in and get my PPL. To be completely honest I am scared stiff. Not just of crashing but of screwing up and landing on the wrong runway or saying something dumb on the radio or having a bad landing and everyone sees it. Watching these 3 videos you made has made me more motivated to go and do it. I am not so scared anymore. Thank you for calmly explaining the intricacies of VFR. I am going to finally do it. :)

My sport license to fly I let lapse and haven't flown for almost 2 years. My current flight instructor has 15,000 hours flying time but he cannot communicate like you. Your training on use of the the trim control was of great value and also the use of power and pitch along with the "death grip" all were a big help to me. Thanks!! Hope your videos are coming.

When I was 13 yo i was in civil air patrol and took my orientation flight in a Cesna 180 i think. That was 26 years ago..lol now i got my son to raise, so it's tough getting into flying right now but i still have a passion for it, so i watch a lot of videos on flying but none of them explain anything. They just tell you what they're doing but not why. Your videos do explain and helps me understand and want to learn more and maybe when my son turns 18 going and getting my pilot's license. That moment you mention when you lift off for the first time. I'll never forget that moment for as long as i live.

What a, what a, what a great guy! Captain Scott, Sir, I subscribed part of the way through the 'first lesson'... yes, I took my eyes from the scan momentarily! I had 8+ hours in a 150/152 18 years ago, but I ran out of the green gas - I just couldn't afford to keep it up... pretty expensive in the UK. I was soon approaching my first solo too. With the exception of giving life to my three beautiful daughters, it's the best experience of my life - nothing else comes close... and I'm an ex-Royal Navy Submariner! However, I've kept up my flying experience ever since using ever-improving PC simulators - it's the next best thing, though without the sheer buzz of flying and those roller-coaster take-offs!. Anyway, I'm loving your videos, your teaching expertise and sitting right next to a seasoned, 747 veteran! :-)

With already working in a Level 1 Emergency Department here in downtown Minnesota and getting all I can at Grad. School, I don’t have extra time for my private license as of yet. I do however use videos, flight sim., and channels like yours as candy, to keep me motivated and add to proficiency for what lies ahead.

Capt. Scott, for whatever it's worth as a new 62 year old student pilot I have elected to learn how to fly in a Cubcrafter Sport Cub. Yeap it's a tailwheel and have heard from a lot of friends that learning in a tailwheel will make you a better pilot. Flying a Cub is so much fun and I feel like it is an extension of me when I fly it. I have flown the Cessna 172 and it's okay a little heavier aircraft but a totally different animal!! You mentioned the death grip. I laughed because that was my first flight and when the CFI told me to make a turn I about had to check my shorts on the final. I've been up four times now and when you explained the level flight. I guess all I had learned zoomed into focus. I'm flying out of Hickory NC and I am blessed to have a Cub I can rent and fly. My CFI is 1/2 my age and a good pilot. Lets say people are like my fingers none of them are the same. Same goes for CFI's !! Finding someone that you get when they talk is paramount. Makes for an easy learning curb. I considered getting a Sport lic. since my interest is more of a bucket list thing. Always wanted to Learn as a young boy but my folks were poor and learning to fly is something only rich kids got to do. I'm still not rich but lets say it's within reach now. I'm going for my Private Pilot lic. I always encouraged my nephew to go for it and get his lic when he was 16 years old. He is now an airline pilot and I'm kinda proud of that. One day I want to fly to Alaska and go hunting and fishing with him. That is part of the bucket list thing. I'm sure you are an awesome Airline Pilot. Weather has been crap lately and Im working weekend now so there goes another week without flying. Oh on that Sport Cub the down side is as I have gotten older I'm starting to put on weight. Must be all that clean living and hard work I do. Well I went in for my regular check up at my Dr's office and about fell off the scale in horror when I saw it flashing 236 lbs!!! That cub has a 1320 weight limit! I grounded myself until I could lose at least 20 lbs. need fuel to fly you know!! I'm down to 220 and plan on being on mark by next week. I love flying and you are 100% right flying drains you because your brain is doing and processing a lot of information. What you said about VFR solo flight Spot on and there is no shame in waiting for a blue sky and fair winds with a minimum of 10 miles visibility. Plan for success not disasters !! Loved the video, thanks again! JC

I came across your channel and I must say excellent teaching!👍🏼
My dad and I flew together a lot back in the day, watching these videos reminds me of the great flying times I’ve had with him.
I LOVE aviation and I’m thinking of getting my pilots license so I can take him up.
Your videos are great and I enjoy watching them!

I've been having fun just watching your videos. What's being said on the radios makes a lot more sense now. Before, it was almost like the weird speaking guy on 'King of the Hill'.

I love these lessons by Captain Scott, he's so good at explaining everything. I hope to get my second lesson soon, and then go on to eventually gain my pilot's license. I think when I was flying my first lesson, stepping on the ball was something I found a bit tricky to maintain. Also the terminology and the speed at which the control tower give their instructions seems quite daunting. I guess all this comes with practice. Very good lessons. T
    Thank you

I've flown once on an introductory flight with a microlight aircraft where my instructor did the taxiing, take-off and landing and I had the controls only for a few minutes during level flight, but it was still interesting. Taxiing back to the hangar became even more "interesting" when the left wheel broke and we suddenly turned to the left as the gear was being dragged down the taxiway. What I think happened was that the inside metal part of the wheel got damaged when we went through a rabbit hole while going through some grass land on the way to this grass runway. I guess we were just very lucky the wheel didn't break all the way through during the take-off or landing. I'm still interested in taking lessons, but VERY much intimidated with the amount of information you need to listen for and remember in communication like those ATIS reports or communication with ATC.

Absolutely loved watching you, great job. Relaxed voice, informative, just great. My father was a flying instructor and turns 80 this year. He goes flying with an instructor and he actually does all the air work, And ground work. He loves it sooo much but misses it dearly. He watches the Mayday series on tv. Lol BUt he is amazed at the number of airline pilots that loose the skill of flying Basic Panel when they get into trouble. I understand check list procedures but to ignore BAsic Panel is astounding. Can you elaborate on that sometimes.. Appreciate your videos. Stay Safe

Being P.I.C. is the most incredibly fantastic - no. I haven't the vocabulary, the control of the English language to describe the joy, the incredibly indescribable experience of being the Pilot In Command (P.I.C.) of a general aviation aircraft. "For those who have experienced it, no explanation is necessary. For those who haven't, no explanation is possible ( thank you motor cycle riders of America for letting me use this quote. For you are the only folks who really understand where I'm coming from).
