Whats your weapon of choice? Lightroom or Lightroom Classic? PS: Looks like I accidentally deleted the pricing table at 10:18 on one of my re-exports 🤦🏼♂️ Apologies everyone, you're gonna have to stare at a black screen for about ~25 seconds. I say pretty much everything you need though so you're not missing anything valuable.
My wife was sooo confused about Adobe’s labeling of their Lightroom programs. I watched this video with her and learned quite a lot. Excellent job. We will watch more of your videos soon.
Thank you so much! I have been incredibly confused. I downloaded Lightroom, but I was watching Lightroom classic videos on RUclips. I could not figure out why the videos did not match what I had downloaded on my computer. This explains it.
I hear that Lightroom Classic has the ability to show two images at the same time for comparison, while Lightroom does not have this feature. For me personally that's a real dealbreaker.
I haven't edited photos in what feels like ages, well at least nothing in Lightroom. I tried Lightroom and was so confused as I was a Lightroom 5 user. I don't get why they moved away from the layout of LRC as it just made sense to people who had used it before (and it wasn't hard to learn as a new user back when I started in Lightroom 2 I believe). Also, why the hell wouldn't they carry all of the features and functionality over to Lightroom? It's so weird.
No worries Andy! I think it's something a lot of photographers are thinking about right now. Both apps are going to change in the next few years so really looking forward to seeing what comes next!
A caveat that has just cost me a whole weekend fixing: Lightroom Classic only uploads/syncs smart previews to the Cloud, typically 1-2MB in file size. They are probably good enough for Instragram, but nothing equivalent to the camera raw images they come from. It's very important to keep the local copy when syncing from Lightroom Classic to the Cloud because there will be NO original on the Cloud. If the local copy is deleted after syncing through Classic, you may lose the original (which was what happened to me yesterday). I happened to find out a forgotten online backup and got the originals back but you may not be so lucky.
I'm constantly switching devices in my editing process. So I maybe sort and upload all my pictures from my MacBook in bed then edit them on my PC and finally decide which one to upload to social media on my phone. I only export those which look good when viewing on a phone so I do it directly on it. This flexibility ist just amazing and even though I really dig those extra features in Lightroom I don't see my preference changing. Maybe when I change my Setup to be more in one Ecosystem and work from my MacBook exclusivly. Edit: Well I should have watched the whole video before commenting! Great Tipp on how to use both!
Hey man thank you for that. I really appreciate those words. 2020 was rough and things have been looking up lately, thanks for your support and being a sub here :)
A thing I wanted to add (or rather emphasize) as someone who just started using Lightroom and has never used Lightroom Classic before: Lightroom seems to miss a lot of quality of life features while handling your photos. Every time I search for a feature (or stumble over it in another way), there is somebody explaining that it exists > I want to try it out, just to realize it again was something only for classic. E.g. Flag a picture and automatically move to the next. Super simple thing. It does exist in classic, apparently. Not in Lightroom. There were more such things and I've only been using it for 3 days. It feels really stripped down. I don't fully understand why this is a separate SW. It feels like the cloud functionality should have been integrated into Classic, with the current Lightroom maybe being some cheaper Lightroom Light version. For know I will keep using it, since I want/need the sync functionality, but eventually I will set something up and switch to classic. There are some Adobe plans providing you both classic and cloud, maybe it's easy to switch between both / handle the same photos.
hey sean you prolly get alot of these and you might not even see this but i still wanna say, i watch HOURS AND HOURS of videos of people doing photography and i never once even thought about liking or subscribing to anyone but i have been nonstop watching your vids for HOURS and ive been loving it, i subbed and liked alot of your vids for the first time in forever i mean i just love your style and i love the way you teach things even though alot of the things you teach i already know i still just enjoy listening to you teach it and it puts more confidence into my photography but please dont stop doing youtube because i promise you if you keep doing it you can be on like petermckinnons level its crazy but have a good day man keep it up PEACE!
Sean I LOVE your content, I just found it today. I went and purchased the Wanderlust Preset pack and am so excited to use it; but PLEASE, calm down on the upsells on your website. Have a "sale" page instead of having me click literally 7 times to get to my cart for just my Wanderlust Preset pack. I know, I'm being petty but I think you can get just as many sales without blasting the customer. Love your content man, thanks for posting, and I'm super excited to use the Wanderlust pack!
Im thinking about migrating to Lightrrom CC. I edit a lot on the iPad and desktop. I really like CC interface. Im just bummed theyd dont support dual display. And Id love more than 1TB
So I love LR. And for workflow I usually just keep the last 500 photos I’ve taken on the cloud and transition the rest to an ssd when the time is right. Great video. Great info.
That’s very interesting, I can see that working for a lot of people. Lightroom is great. I hope storage becomes cheaper in coming years, would honestly love to transition fully to LR
@sean Dalton - Seems like an issue around the 10:13 mark until 10:41 the screen goes black. Just wanted to let you know. You were talking about the Adobe packages.
Yeah quite unfortunate 🤦🏼♂️ someone else called it out I put it in the pinned comment. Was just a pricing table confirming everything I was saying. Don’t think it’s worth deleting and re-uploading for that
I am currently getting familiar with using both vs one or the other. Storing all full res images locally. But leveraging smart previews in LR (mobile) for easy access... I am hearing these smart previews do not impact your 20G of storage on the 9.99 plan. Yet the res is high enough to share online, edit, and even make small prints. While there is storage used, I am hearing this is free and unlimited. Only full res files impact your adobe storage limit. -- I am currently trying to determine whether to be selective or put smart previews of everything in the cloud. I love being able to use AI to search all my images for a person or water, motorcycles...
Hey Sean, thank you very much for your informative video. I use Lightroom and Photoshop in the photo bundle with 2 TB storage and I'm currently working with Lightroom CC and therefore synchronize my photos with the cloud. But there is one thing I don't understand. When I'm in Lightroom CC, Originals get uploaded to the Cloud, right? Why do I have to choose a place on my local computer to save them? Can I tell Lightroom to stop saving them on my computer and just put the originals in the cloud? Or can I even save all data in the cloud? Would be happy if you could help me here 🙂
Well done!! what’s the easiest way to destructively edit some of my photos and having them automatically saved back in their original folder without having to export them and having another version of the same photo? Thx
How would you approach working with an editor that Is working remotely? I personally shoot A LOT and recently started using the collaborative proofing to have my clients select their images, and im wondering if there's an efficient way to get the photos to my interns or editors to continue the work. Any tips??? Edit: I use Lightroom classic and sync photos to the cloud. thank you!
I really enjoyed this as I've been trying to decide whether to switch to Lightroom. I currently have Lightroom classic and all my photos stored on a RAID external hard drive but I travel a lot so often my first edits are done on Lightroom for iPad. I'm not very clear on what the relationship is between LRC and Lightroom for my iPad. I always add all my images to my hard drive when I get back from a trip but I feel like I lose the edits I've done while I've been travelling. Do you have anything you could share to help me work out a better workflow?
Thanks a lot brother 🥰🥰 you explained both the softwares very perfectly ❤️❤️ in on sentence I would say adobe lightroom is good for normal users and adobe lightroom classic is good for professional photographers or editors not for beginners. I understood the topic ❤️❤️
Hey Sean What I found lacking in Lr (or maybe I havent looked at the right place) is the lack of fine controls to adjust colour in the maks, where you cant really adjust the individual colour combinations. Any advice regarding that at all
Thanks for the video. I've always been a hobbyist photographer but never done much post-processing. I'm one of those people that would still prefer to keep my images on my hard drive, but I really like how lightroom works vs Classic, and like you said, is probably the future. So. . . when editing in lightroom, does it save your edits on your hard drive AND in the cloud? or, alternatively is there away to download your lightroom saved data back to your hard drive later. My thinking is, once I export a JPG out I'm not likely to go back and do heavy editing on most of my photos so, what happens if I just say once a year or so, delete all my "finsished" photo shoots from my adobe storage. Are all of those edits completely gone, are they saved to my local raw files, can I download the editited raws before deleting, etc.?
I’m not fully sure about this to be honest. That’s why I use classic to organize everything on my hard drives and I only sync certain collections which I want on the cloud that I can edit in LR
I didn't know about LR Classic and Lightroom was the only option in the Apple store, so downloaded a trial and used it for three days. Most of the youtube tutorials were using Lightroom Classic. Now I have cancelled LR and downloaded LR Classic with Bridge and Photo Shop from Adobe's website. I've been exporting edited photos to my hard drive. Now I have to find out what Bridge is for -- photo organizing? and a photo source to use for LC Classic?
Thanks Sean for this. I have been using Classic for a while but it is nice to know the differences. FYI your video goes black when you talk pricing. Around 10:18. Not sure if that was intentional
Damn sorry about that Jon! At 10:18 I had a pricing table that reflected what I was saying. Must have accidentally deleted on one of the re-exports. Too late to fix now. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment here Jon.
Guessing you've gotten this question a lot lately, so my apologies if i missed it. What are your thoughts on the new iPad Pro, would you ever make the switch especially for travel?
I think it’s awesome and I can’t wait to pick it up. I don’t think I could fully make the switch for travel yet because I like having the full functionality of Final Cut Pro and Photoshop. But, for shorter trips absolutely. Usually when I travel im gone for extended periods of time though
I want to cull before editing. Is there a way to get a library module view on LR? Or would you recommend culling on LRC and then syncing to cloud for LR?
Question. LrC seems to be the one for me, I currently use the non-subscription LR from a few years ago that doesn't allow for updates. I now am open to paying some to get the latest updates. The question, I use both my desktop and my laptop to do my LR edits, do I need LR and not LrC? I do not want to store my images on the cloud at this time.
If you're using Lightroom on a PC do you have to be connected to the internet? Do you have to store your photos on the cloud or do you have the option to store them on your hard drive? So my big question is since I'm using Lightroom CC and Photoshop, is Lightroom web based only? And the reason I'm asking is because Adobe is literally doubling my subscription price and that's not going to go with me, because for one I don't know if it's going to double again next year? So i am going to have to reduce my subscription to Lightroom only which is fine on my iPad but it is the only option for my PC. Thank you very much.
Hey Ryan, I would say no. Don’t focus on stock. That would limit you creatively, suck your time, and it’s difficult to make money in this. Just shoot as much as you can, and shoot anything at all. Meet other photographers and push your creativity. That’s the best advice I have for beginner photographers :)
I haven't used Lightroom classic in years. Somehow seem to have lost or can't find them Now I look in Lightroom and my photos are there. How would I proceed
Tbh all of my photos are saved in Google cloud I just download them into a file and another file once I've finished I'm still new to this however so sooner or later I'll find a new way
Thanks for this! One quick note: “Softwares” is not a word. The plural of software is software, but it’s less confusing to say “applications” or “programs.”
Can't you save images you edit in Lr in a scandisk aswell? I know you said it auto saves to cloud but can't you do both?
Given Adobes current practices and BS TOS I use Affinity.
