    0:12 to 0:18 this can replace "caster wheels" no more need to slightly rotate to align the wheels before moving , Totally awesome guys!

      Not exactly. When the axis of the hemispheres is vertical, it cannot move in the direction of the main shaft. The closer to vertical the hemisphere axis is, the faster the hemisphere needs to turn when moving in a direction parallel to the main shaft. One way around this is to put tiny rollers in the middle of each hemisphere.

    the shoe shows that the crawler can traverse unconventional terrain such as oddly shaped rocks or plants. It demonstrates its versatility in crawling over necessary terrain

    It wouldn't be efficient for a car to be able to move sideways. Omni directional wheels are too heavy, too many moving parts, and they wouldn't provide the same kind of transfer of power from engine to the road. This would be ideal for use in fork lifts instead where speed doesn't matter but maneuverability is key.

    I saw Airtrax some time ago they put those under machines to lift stuff. If you google omni directional wheels you see several wich all follow the same concept. Works well and is fast.

    The object tool they state that is used to pick up objects is not an invention at all. I used to be a popular toy in the '80's. Who here remembers that water filled balloon like toy that would slip threw your fist when you applied pressure?

    The enveloping gripper seems to be based on a "water snake" toy. Those balloon things that keeps turning themselves inside out so they are difficult to hold.

    Tanks don't move fast and even though it can move side to side... there's still the problem of being shot at by anywhere from the humble RPG (at 295 meters per second) to the experimental rail gun (at 3 kilometers per second).

    This is pretty bad ass, of course I get all excited thinking of the possible applications.. probably be a pain the ass to work on.
    I wonder if you could apply this to a larger scale, like mining or forestry or construction equipment, or hell even mechs?

    cool treads, this reminds me of screw-propelled vehicles like russian zil... not as fancy and probably didn't work as well on hard surfaces as this one, but still pretty crazy looking vehicles from the 40's... wiki screw-propelled for more crazy vehicles!

    I love every reengeneering of the good ol' wheel, really cool!
    and it's strange that no one commented on the sucking possibilities of the latest prototype in the video. Where are all the other pervs and kids?
    On a side note I love how the Ultra Realistic Dental Training Robot keeps showing and it will until the end of time, with that naughty thumb, hahahaha

    It's not really omni-directional. It is bi directional. This i why it has to zigzag when it goes at any other angle than k*90. In this vehicle the omniball isn't really doing what they explain it does (two independantly moving hemispheres). When the car is turning in place it's just the left and the right band turning. These omniballs are useless when you really think about it. Swedish wheels will do it for you, true omnidorectional driving.

      But if rotating quickly, mecanum wheels create much more vibration. Mecanum wheels are much more resources efficient and simple (less likely to fail), but also less energy efficient. To create strafing motion, they create diagonal momentum, with a net momentum of either to the right or to the left, so there is more energy lost.
      Mecanum wheels are by far superior in applications where vibration isn't a concern or they're rotating slowly enough to not cause noticeable vibration and where maintenance cannot be done.
      This track system is superior in application where a smooth ride is necessary and long-term robot deployments where emergency maintenance in case of failure can occur if needed.
      It's all up to application. Mecanums are simpler, this track system is possibly more practical for certain applications.

      Mecannum wheels are harder to make than this device especially the ball thing he showed and loss of energy is lower in turning orthogonally. Essentially this is a Omni track or chain.

      Tammc09 Yes , this concept is using partial tires. The more complicated the mechanism the less weight/load and abuse it can take.

      なんだかSFが段々と具現化してきていますね。日本は今世界一の発明・開発の第一人国なんだが、こういう発想・発明を初期段階で早くから発表してしまい、その殆どがアメリカ等の国々に盗まれて先を越されてしまったり、セールスの後手から遅れをとるんだよな。実用化してから公表してもいいのではないだろうか。因みに太平戦争時、レーダーを重視していなかった帝国海軍は、日本で開発した高性能アンテナ(YAGI・八木宇田アンテナ)を軍に持ち込んだが、軍は役に立たないと言って取り合うことが無かった。しかし、アメリカはこの発明を取り込み、本格的なレーダーや通信アンテナの応用に成功して、日本の通信網を全て掌握してしまった。ミッドウエイ開戦の日本のボロ負けはこのアンテナに負けたといっても過言ではない。このYAGI(八木・ヤギ)アンテナは強力な指向性あるアンテナで送受信に優れている。一般の棒状のアンテナ(GP・DP)は全方向性であるが、これは指向性ある。

      KUSUNOKI KONZERNなるほどね。言うとおりですね。成功すると直ぐ喋ってしまう。口ふさげだね。スパイもいるし、法令的には刑の量刑が中途半端なんだよね。金払えば許される法令のカタログかメニューでもあるような感じだもの、東芝の件でも1千万程度支払いすれば、いいんだろう。2千万受取っていたら1千万残るから、なんのこっちゃないよね。これではスパイはなくならないでしょうね。

    youre doing it wrong.. the small axis should go forward and backward.. the long axis should go side to side.. much more efficient and faster and less wear on the treads

      The crawler is better perform on soft ground just like Wheel vs Track. Both designs have their Pro & Con.

      Yes and no. To control it is harder as in order to move diagonally the conveyor part of the track needs to switch direction for every half turn of the track. But it could be better for muddier and less optimal surfaces.
