This tram network is very different from the one in my Polish city of Gdańsk. Here trams mostly run on separate rails (not on the street), and when they do run on the street it's usually 2 tracks in the centre of a big and busy road, instead of 1 track in a rather tight street. There are also less points of crossing with other tram tracks (like in 7:10). Very nice video, shows the buetiful tram system of Lisbon.
Lovely, enjoyed watching it. We used to have double decker trams here in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, but they got rid of them and ripped up the lines. Wish we still had them.
My wife and I rode a older red tram over this line in May 2018. Those walls get VERY close at some spots. They really got rolling at some places. It was a great ride, it felt like we were in someone's model railroad layout! If you ever find yourself in Lisbon and have the time, RIDE THIS.
It's impressive to see how the traction works by simple adhesion on the tracks in such a hard way.... steep gradients and sharp curves. And the tram drivers need to have lots of patience....Nice video, Thanks for sharing, greetings from the colony........ Brazil.
@@Geno2733 in walkable neighbourhoods with comprehensive public transport you can go shopping more often and buy less stuff rather than doing a massive shop infrequently.. when a community carries groceries and walks with them rather than sitting in a car it will improve overall health
When he moves the controller handle in a clockwise direction he is supplying power to the traction motors. When he moves it around the other way he is in regeneration, or turning the traction motors into generators which slows down the car.
I love trams! The big lever on the left (that moves the needle) is the power control, the black lever on the right in the wooden frame must be the air brakes, the wheel on the right is a hand brake, the small lever on the left (near the power lever) Is the operation (ahead, reverse, disconnect), the keyboard with the display maybe is the main unit for the stations annunciator, the console; switches for doors, lights, wipers, speedometer, emergency stop...
It's the general sound structure of the language... In both Portuguese and Russian there is a strong tonic accent with stressed vowel sounds having open and closed quality and the vowels in other syllables are quite reduced into different types of schwas, /ə/ and /ɐ/, or else even clipped off. In addition there are many soft consonants that are the same in both languages: for example, ʃ ʧ ʒ ɕ z v. Palatalized consonants are noticeably quite frequent. Actually the two languages are remarkably similar in sound. It's not surprising that speakers might also have similar accents in English.
René A.M. SCHELL that’s interesting. I’ll listen more closely to both Portuguese and Russian speakers from now on. I’m thinking there maybe similarities between their music as well? Thank you for your erudite comments - it’s not often seen in these comment sections on RUclips.
Rien que pour ce petit tram, je rêve de Lisbonne et du Portgual... Voie métrique, beaucoup de denivelés ! Ce tram roule comme au premier jour ! Son entretien doit être impeccable ! Proficiat, tram 28 ! En attendant goûtons quelque bon Vin Portugais...
That throddle does almost a complete 360 so its hard to figure out where the acceleration is and where it breaks to stop. The streets are so narrow id worry about cars pulling out or people darting out in traffic. But this driver is totally relaxed and waves at people. What a nerve wracking yet cool job!
I am not sure of what follows. Turning clockwise from the main controller from the position set @09:00 (as we say, i.e. full left) will accelerate the tram. From the same position, turning anticlockwise will generate some braking. I suspect that this one is only rheostatic (dynamic) since in some sequences, the tram continues at low speed even with the controller set at maximum braking. Generally, dynamic brake do not work anymore at low speed. There is obvisouly a pneumatic or an electric brake directly acting on the wheels or axes that is regulated by the small handle at the right hand of the driver.
The switches are using a electric current fall. If the switch needs to change, the driver is rising suddenly the traction for half a second, creating a current fall in that part of the catenary alimentation, which circuit closes trough the rails. And induction box into the switch is activated, and an electromechanical switch moves the rail points.
They have an electic feeding line above, but the old trams have two types of pantograph, one for the old system where there is just a metal rod with an metal wheel at the end which is held in place with a rope which ride along the cable on the old routes and the tipical pantograph which you see everywhere on trams and trains only comes to use when they are traveling on the modern lines.

this city need to put some car restrictions on some of them narrow streets, this is just insane that the tramms can drive there, or does the city want to kill off the system
This is Disneyland! It is a completely new tram with only a modernized car body! You should have seen that with the vintage trams without all that modern stuff - the drivers had to to real work with three independent brake systems in those steep streets.

Rail switches, in case you still need it
The switches are using a electric current fall.
