  • In this video I demonstrate how I re-lume my watch hands for all my restorations. It is a relatively straightforward procedure which you can do with the naked eye if your eyesight is better than mine!
    You don't need much equipment to do this, just some patience. It can be as inexpensive as you like. The professionals will use watch grade materials and are able to colour match however if you just want to try you really don't need to spend allot of money .
    Tweezers, lume powder, binder, something to apply the lume and ideally some magnification.
    The key to success is to make the mix the right consistency, not too runny and not too thick. Its only when carrying out the work do you figure out the best mix for the hands. Bigger / wider the gap to lume the more important that mix needs to be for it to gather on each side and to cover the gap.
    Below is a link to the powder I have used.

    Very informative thank you especially as I haven't attempted this before - or even taken a watch apart to get to the hands first! Another video on this part would be useful? I also want to change a second hand from red to silver with lumed tip. Any tips would be gratefully received!

    Great vid, would love to try this. But want a bit of a creamy patinated look. Would I need a different powder (if so, do you know which one?), or do I add something to the powder or the binder? Thanks

    Hello again Mike.
    This made me realise that I need not buy new hands whenever my Vostok hands are rusting and the lume falls out.
    So I think I might just try this remedy out and see what happens.
    Just one question, what actually is that Humbrol clear binder?
    Is it water soluble or something that is spirit based and evaporates quickly ?
    I would have thought that acrylic stuff would probably wash off with water and runs the risk of shrinking and cracking as it dries.
    Yours did not, which leaves me wondering is it similar to clear nail varnish ?
    My reason for asking is simple.. Humbrol is at least £7.50 for 28ml and will begin to deteriorate once opened.
    Whereas clear lacquer nail varnish starts at £1.39 and who cares if it goes hard by the time you next want to use it.

    • @MyRetroWatches
      @MyRetroWatches  5 лет назад +2

      only real tip is steady hands. same process. carefully remove old lume, I have used a microscope for this. re-apply with an oiler. I practised making small drops first, to figure out the constancy is right and then to size the droplet of lume. joy is if you get it wrong you can just clean off and try again.

    Is luminous deteriorate overtime? My seiko watch lume become dark. I don't know why. Btw, is there different kinds of lume or all of them are the same?

    • @MyRetroWatches
      @MyRetroWatches  5 лет назад +2

      Ivan Capuz hello. Yes lume loses its power over the years. There are many types of lume powder and the most expensive would be Bergeon especially made for watches. In my opinion it’s just finer powder really. You would pay a much higher price for it.
      What I use is very affordable especially if you want to try to do it yourself and it works really well.

    Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed to watch it. One little suggestion; after apllying the lume, let it cure and than apply a second layer of white paint, this will improve the look of the lume and also the glow performance. cheers from Spain.

    what do you do with really old hands which have been lumed probably with radium?

    • @MyRetroWatches
      @MyRetroWatches  3 года назад +1

      Leave them well alone . if you are going to remove then wear a mask and gloves. scratch it off into a plastic sealable bag I have only done it once and I was not sure if it was radium or not. Last thing you want is it in your lungs.

    Is it viable to add lumen to a watch that never had it? Or would the added weight throw the timing off?

    I got a massive and pleasant surprise in applying my little UV lamp to my quite old Sekonda Safari, not only were the hands shining a brilliant 10 min long glow but the numbers too are fully lumed lasting just as long, had this thing years and never thought to check it. Another Sekonda, a humble gold tone older mens quartz has a fully lumed dial and again this stayed lit for more than 5 mins so been finding out which ones do have working lume and which don't, seems the older Sekonda's have quite a strong lume than the newer ones. How do you do the lume dots on such as Amphibia's which have notoriously weak lumes esp the post Soviet ones?

    • @MyRetroWatches
      @MyRetroWatches  4 года назад +1

      Hi Ian, I know nothing of lume on Soviet watches or what they used. pre 1960 you could be still talking about radium which was radioactive!

    You may not be concerned about your own health but you should warn the viewers that vintage watches could contain Radium (1960 circa and older). You wouldn't want them coping you and the way you blow that old lume airborne. Even tho the hands don't glow anymore, it's still radioactive.
