Thanks D. Han! We definitely prefer to sail when we can but sometimes not motoring in a swell is hard on the boat! We appreciate the positive feedback about the video 👍🏻😊
“…going a little slow…” wind check -25 kts! speed check -7.5 to 8-kts! You guys are intense!!! That sail repair in the middle of a 25-kt blow was gutsy. You’re very resourceful and creative with putting the fix in.
🇨🇦 Great vid ! ! Again. ... Also, thank for the suggestion of S/V Savour. As “ Experienced sailors/Cinema photographers, maybe you teach them a few tips on presentation? You two are good teachers and we have truly enjoyed your on air lessons! Thank you 🙏🏽 You two are a gifted team and your love for each other and the profession of sailing ⛵️ Thank you for sharing your life with us here on the Calgary Prairies 🇨🇦
Hi Michael!!! Thanks for the add! We are also biting at the bit for southern ocean sailing! Pandemics and whales may slow us down, but we will get there!!!! :-)
You two work well together. As you get older, it seems that the times when you overcame obstacles and faced challenges are remembered while the easy times all seem to blur. Sail on!
It's interesting to see all the challenges of a long passage. It's so different for me to imagine fixing all of that at sea. I'm used to having a dock, workshop, tools, and time off the boat to get things fixed!
That opening drone footage, just spectacular! I appreciate the updates on the wear and tear items that constantly need attention - being at sea is really tough on everything. Many problems don’t suddenly appear but actually give us early warning signs if we care to notice, the pedestal fasteners and autopilot being perfect examples. How often do you find yourselves running the water maker, and any difficulty getting consumables for it?
Hey Kevin thanks for the comment! I'm glad you're enjoying the drone footage! We'll have to make a video some day of our deck walk check list! That's a good idea. We have been really awesome at conserving water so far and haven't needed to make water during a passage yet.. knock on wood. This would be a good blog some day too!
@@SailingSweetRuca I like the idea of a deck walk checklist. I get really easily distracted when i see something needing attention, I forget what it was I went to check on in the first place!
Amazing couple doing amazing things. The story telling is as good as any documentary I have ever seen. The narration was amazing. The drone footage was beautiful. Most sailing video's I have watched the people all seem to get nervous when the wind gets around 20 knots or higher. You all seem to get a cup of coffee and take it in stride. Is it possible to run the wire chaser through first and pull the cord back through? Thanks for all the work that goes in to making these videos. Yall keep having fun and stay safe.
Wow Stubby, I've got to say you always manage to say the nicest things and to add something new each time. It warms my heart you're enjoying our videos and our journey! Motivation to keep producing for sure! That's a great idea on the wire tape. We didn't try it that way, and hopefully there's not a next time, but if there is we will have to keep it in mind! It really needed to be just 'so' in order to fit, so, I'm not sure if backwards would work, but it's worth a try! Cheers to you!
Normally when using the "Fish Tape" I would either use electrical tape or stitch the Dyneema to the fish tape. Great to see you dealing with these "regular" types of maintenance things at sea.
I wanted to offer you a couple of suggestions. Wind sensors are a common issue with wind following autopilots. That being said we all know that birds on the mast wreck wind sensors by landing on them. A good solution is to purchase a sonic style sensor that is more durable. There are several on the market. Also in my mind along with a spare starter, I think a spare autopilot ram is a must. Though honestly looking at your boat my last 29ft had what looks like about the same size as what you have installed. Could you maybe benefit from a beefier ram? Oh the Bed Pirate was momentarily concerned that there was a dog on the TV while watching your video!
Hey Allyn! You've got a point with the wind sensor! Stay tuned for more about this in following episodes 😉 We do indeed carry a spare ram and computer for the autopilot! Great advice! We'd like a beefier one also, but this one has been working well for us so far! An important crew member for sure! Roxy says hello to Bed Pirate 🐶😽
Hi Robert! Welcome aboard. We are about 5 months behind in editing. Real time location is available on our website www.sweetruca.com beware of spoilers though ;-)
Respectfully suggesting you consider a Hydrovane, having used one on our first circumnavigation in the 1980s, using one on our present voyage. It has never failed, underlining it will never steer as straight a course as Kate.
Thanks Rauf. We appreciate the suggestion. We'll have to check the budget and our timing again. Kate's great behind the wheel, you're right about that! Endurance is needed on these long passages and different steering methods make a difference.
Finally, I found "sailing video". All the other RUclips sailers seem to focus on issues of seasmanship, which is understandable if you are newish to sailing and find yourself on or about to make, a ocean passage. But I've been working on the water as a professional for over 30 years and the 'seasmanship' aspect isn't what I'm looking for at the moment. Ironic that it should take a couple of racers to provide the education I crave - why? Because I have a history of sometimes badmouthing racers, accusing them of being 'unserious' sailors. Obviously then, this is both my comeuppance and my education. How efficient! I hit 50yrs old recently and can report that one of the best parts of getting old is the well-earned wisdom and perspective achieved, followed immediately by the worst thing: a kick to my ego's balls when said perspective instantly reveals what an insufferable jackass I was when young. Sail on friends!
Hey Bob, thanks for the comment. Unfortunately the damage isn't discovered well after we've arrived to shore. We're keeping the story line going with the timeline. I know it stinks to wait, almost as much as it stinks to find the damage! We do post real time updates on Patreon and we are one of the more affordable channels out there, if you just can't wait any longer!
@@SailingSweetRuca The wife would kill me if I sent money to any channel, but am so glad many people do. Used to launch the wife around the forestay racing Hobie Cat's that tend to bury the nose at high speed. So she gets credit for flying the traipses. We practiced up righting the cat, and could get her flipped back up in 15 seconds, won many a race with the quick flip.
Hey Peter! Thanks for the comment. Roxy does really well on passage and gets better each and every time. She loves taking naps and laying in the sun and absolutely enjoys a good snuggle. She goes to the bathroom on deck. One day we will have to reveal how this is done!
I know rounding Cape horn takes much more time and is far more challenging and perilous, but the money you saved on the canal would contribute a vast amount towards, for example, your instruments.
@@SailingSweetRuca One day maybe, but I think we all adore your commitment to enjoying life more than any mathematics. Please look after yourselves as a lot of us have taken you very much to our hearts.

The cherry on the pie a video from the dynamic duo the best from the west east north and south ! Loving every minute of your video's ! Fair winds !
Wow Neal! That is such a super comment! We really appreciate the positive feedback and are very glad that you enjoyed it!

Are you two considering installation of a mechanical windvane pilot to assist you on passages and backup your electronic autopilot?
As of now we don't have any plans for a wind vane, but we would like to try sailing with one sometime.
