Don't forget FatBoy Slim's "Right Here Right Now", i love that one! Ren uses "retake" to describe when he creates his own rap lyrics over the tracks for someone else's existing song -- what some called a "mixtape track" in the US. "Back on 74/Message" is a bit more of a straight cover than he usually does on a retake; though he obviously played the instruments himself and altered the tempo and attitude of both songs to match that soulful style he was going for, and the rap in the middle is all original.

Ren is releasing a new song Thursday, "Halftime" Nas Retake. He has been working hard while still going in to the clinic daily for treatment once he got back to Calgary. This was shot in the UK while he was taking a break for a couple weeks. Ren may just be dropping 2 new albums this year of his own music and some pretty great collabs. Plus these retakes.
He did release another retake 2 weeks before this one was released. It's called "Fred Again Mash Up." Fred Again is a famous producer and he just got some prestigious award for his music. I think it's mostly edm music. Anyway, Ren took 5 of Fred Again's songs and created 1 song that he preforms in a live, one shot performance - Just Ren and his electric guitar and his beautiful singing (no rap on this one.) You guys should def check it out! Ren can take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions in 1 song. Also, you would think in order to do a retake of 5 mashed up edm type songs that you would need more then 1 man and an accoustic guitar and a microphone...... Unless it's Ren! I listen to that song every chance I get and it's been out for at least a month now.❤
Thanks for reacting to Ren! 💙

Enjoy the ride, you're in for a treat! You won't find anything that sounds exactly like this, because he covers a WIDE array of genres, and this is a new style for him. If you don't mind a few suggestions, other tracks where you can enjoy his soulful singing include "Chalk Outlines live" and "How To Be Me live" (both duets with Chinchilla); "Wade In The Water/Trouble So Hard" and "Englishman In New York" with his former band The Big Push, and "Earned It/Man's World/Falling" performed live on the street with Sam Tompkins. A lot of his more recent stuff is rap-focused because that was the theme of his most recent album Sick Boi, but I'd suggest giving those a trial even if rap isn't usually your thing -- his flavor is really different from anyone else in the modern rap game. "Genesis", "Power" and "Seven Sins" might be good places to start with that.

This is the first time I have heard anything negative about this song and I have literally watched over 100 reactions to it as it’s currently my favorite retake of his.
His voice is perfect for this, he is the lead and the mix between him and the backup singers is spot on, he mixes meticulously.
Rens vocal range is insane. He can go way deeper than he did at the end of this and extremely high (check out Ren & Sam Tompkins - Latch and also The Big Push - Swan Song for some highs and the I shot the sheriff mashup and Wade in the water mashup for lows)
Also this is Brighton not London.
The first part was, like AJ said, by Jungle from last year and the rap part was all Ren with some awesome bars.
He sang both covers way better than the original. The Jungle version is too fast I think so Rens slowed down version suits it better and as far as Sting goes, I think he is massively overrated.
Ren does reggae style so well and has an amazing cover of “Englishman in New York” with his band The Big Push as well as “I shot the sheriff/ road to Zion/ hiphop” and more.
You should check out his “Fred again mashup” which is 5 EDM songs turned into singing with acoustic guitar. And also some of The Big Push.
In any case here’s some info and lyrics about this song 🖤

Singers - Sylvia Mwenze & Scarlett Fae

    {BACK ON 74}
Keep it rockin', doin’ the same thing
And we get high on the breakdown
And we were watching from the same time
But that don't change what I think now.
And we were talking 'bout the same crime
No, we don't hide when it rains now
I learned my lesson at the same time
Ooh, ooh ooh ooh where did it
    Go, back on 74
    Call this place my home
    Never gonna cry anymore
    Where did it all go
    Ooooh ooooh ooooh ooooh ooooh
Keep it rockin', doin' the same thing
And we get high on the break down
And we were watching from the same time
But that don't change what I think now
And we were talking 'bout the same crime
No, we don't hide when it rains now
I learned my lesson at the same time

    Where did it all

    Ooh, let it go
    Let it go
    Let it go
    Ooh

Let's take em back to 74 inherently poor/pour
    Myself on the (Break down)
Talk is secondary, first my speciality,
Naughty bars on a (Take down)
Rap/wrap like nicotine, sound so addicting,

Take more head than the blade of a guillotine, uh
Filipina - you shoulda seen her
She likes girls but I turned Tina
    Angelina wanna raid her tomb
    Ocarina with the Zelda moves
Sound so smooth, wax strip groove
Don't stay still when I make that move
Thought for food, colour scheme nude
Massive like jungle, shy but rude
    And the world is yours,
That's a Nas shout out with an awkward…pause
    Cos the world is flawed
when the power makes money and the money makes wars
And the world is more than a place in space on a spinning ball
But for now that's all, back to 1974
    Go, back on 74
    Call this place my home
    Never gonna cry anymore
    Where did it all go
    Ooooh ooooh

Just a lonely day, an island lost at sea, oh
Another castaway, nobody here but me, oh
More loneliness than any man could bear
Rescue me before I fall into despair, oh

Yes and no. While Ren is the main focus and they are backups, what was pointed out is that they were nearly silenced by his higher singing and that's not how backup singers are meant to be used. They should be used as additions to the sound.

Jungle's 'Back on 74' is a very cool song, but the dance video surrounding it make it much more famous recently. The rap interlude is pure Ren; he added the underlying melody from Message in a Bottle. Then finally Message in a Bottle by Sting. He sounds so very much like him it is amazing.

Ren is an artist and like all true artists includes a message in the song track. It is fifty years since the heady daze of 1974 (Bowie, Zepplin, Zappa, Cream to name a few) and freedom through hard fought war. Now we are being controlled and subjugated and the SOS is a call to arms.
