How We Use a Manure Spreader to Feed Our Cows

  • In this video we use an old John Deere Manure spreader to feed our cows. There's a lot of options when it comes to how you feed your cows and I just wanted to show one of the ways we do it. Hope you enjoy the video.

    My Father Had A John Deere Manure Spreader Like Yours But Was Much Older. When You Were Moving The Paddle Rotated And Chain Drive Deck Moved Towards The Rear To Feed The Paddle. He Used It Occasionally For Manure But Mainly For Wood Chips. He Did A lot Of Logging & Chipping On The Farm And Would Blow The Chips From Chipper Into It And Then Drive Through The Woods To Spread Them Out Evenly.

    That's a great idea n u will like the cab have watch dairy farm here in Texas make a rack on a flat bed or trailer so they can turn the big squares on their side n use a winch or cylinder to be able to drop blocks (flakes) of hay in their feeders hope yall get warm soon

    That a brilliant idea with the spreading of the bales,seen a farmer do it in scotland with silage,simple and works so well.

      We had the chance to visit Ireland last November. My sister and her husband are working in Dublin. We did a small road trip over to the Cliffs of Moher then south to Killarney and did the Ring of Kerry road. You have a beautiful country.

    Who would have thought? I have a Haybuster bale processor and I love it but heck I could have used the manure spreader. Another good one.

    We would pick up corn silage with our manure spreader in winter from our dairy neighbors...nice way to feed.

    i do the very same thing but if you stack them ontop of each other it will do even a metter job of mixing. Also I have very good luck running mine at an idle.

      The Case has actually been around the ranch for around 10 years. It’s my dads cousins but they do a lot of equipment sharing so we use it on occasion.

      @@LuthiRanchWY Just kidding about the Case IH but it looks new. Is that smaller than the DA 7085? Great new use for old spreader. And less work than doing the hammer job on round bales.

      @@robertrpenny haha it’s alot easier than the hammer job on the round bales. The case is 115 HP and the DA is only 85 HP

      @@LuthiRanchWY I thought CaseIH looked smaller but looks can be deceiving. I guess it walks softly and carries a big stick. Do you guys ever use the DA 9130?

      @@robertrpenny Yes, we don’t use it much in the winter but we use it a lot in the summer. It’s hooked up to a Case 4 by 4 baler most of the time.

      Thanks! The elk are still causing alot of damage. We have been killing some and trying to scare them out but they keep coming in.

      Sorry I should have mentioned that but the beaters run off of the PTO. The elk are still a huge problem, we’ve been killing some and trying to scare them off but they keep coming back.

      We do have a hydraulic box that will control the flow rate. We don’t have it on this tractor though so you just have to feather the controls to get the right speed out of it

    Sorta looked like it was beating the leaves off the alfalfa, but your critters seem to be cleaning it up fine, so i guess its not! Pretty slick, I’ve often wondered how people feed the big squares, I only ever been around em once, and had to feed em off a flatbed trailer with a spud fork. That sucked.

      Haha I’ve fed them that way plenty of times before also. I enjoy feeding that way when the snow isn’t so deep.

    How would that work with a round bale. They are generally less prone to flaking and could put more pressure onto the beaters. Have you had a chance to try it with the round bales?

      I don’t think it would work all that well with a round bale, but we have never tried it. I think it would be a lot harder on the machine and not come out very even.

    I tried that with round bales and it didn’t work as good as yours does with square bales

      I did have to buy the 3-way this year but we have put it up ourselves before also. All the other bales are ones we put up this year

      @Luthi Ranch just curious we donot use big squares n was just curious if it would feed round bales any way we r having are jan n fed cold spell 21-23 highs ice snow sleet n North wind real feels from 5-12
      It was 68 last sat but hope yall r doing allright n cold better

    do you feel like you have less waste by spreading it out like that? I have been using round bale feeders i am not sure they are worth it

      I have much less waste. I’ve fed with round and square feeders before and we still do but they pull so much out and stomp on it that you waste a lot. This way I only feed the exact amount the cows need for that day and they clean it right up, the only downside is you have to feed every day. If you try and feed enough for a couple days this way they will just lay and stomp on the remainder

      @@LuthiRanchWY I only have 11 mother cows and I am just lazy enough I don't feed everyday. I do have a little feedlot and have to feed those little devils corn everyday. Good luck with the cow herd

      @@LuthiRanchWY We are having more snow than any winter in the last 20 years. I am not complaining but I am ready for spring. It should be a good year for the hay fields and summer mountain cow pastures.

    I use a bale processor some. Only thing about a processor is the alfalfa leaves are ground up and blow away where your spreader doesn't do that. your spreader wouldn't spread a round bale though

      Thanks for the comment. No our spreader wouldn’t be able to spread a round bale. We do have an older Dew-Eze bale processor that we can do round bales in but I’ve just been unrolling the bales so far
